"Cry" was nice (proto-morphing and all).

Didn't they (for it was himself and Lol Creme) do the vid for U2's "Numb" as well? If so, classic for that. I'm fairly sure they did the vids for "Stuck In A Moment..." and "Even Better Than The Real Thing". I'd be more inclined towards picking dud status for their vid for "Don't Stand So Close To Me '86", but I suppose it does its job as an advert for a Police greatest hits album. The G&C vid for "Every Breath You Take" somehow stayed with me even though I don't recall it as being particularly special.

Deluxe (Damian), Monday, 11 July 2005 13:26 (twenty years ago)

Yes, they did do Numb, and since then he's done dozens (checks CV) - recent ones have been for Bryan Adams, Will Young, The Corrs, U2, The Rapture, Zucchero, Ronan Keating, Sting, etc. etc. So we're not talking credible, but presumably we are talking pompous and glossy.

Question is - do you think he'd make a good feature filmmaker?

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 11 July 2005 13:36 (twenty years ago)

Possibly so, possibly gimmicky with it.

Deluxe (Damian), Monday, 11 July 2005 13:40 (twenty years ago)

Didn't they turn down "Purple Rain" the movie? I remember Lol Creme being gutted after it was successful...

They also did "Two Tribes" for Frankie with the Chernyenko/Reagan wrestling match — that was pretty "credible."

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Monday, 11 July 2005 14:28 (twenty years ago)

as such, of the ones I've seen:

Classic:

Duran Duran - "A View to a Kill" (my personal favorite), "Girls on Film"
Godley & Creme - "Cry"
Frankie Goes to Hollywood - "Relax" (to an extent, anyway)
Herbie Hancock - "Rockit"
The Police - "Wrapped Around Your Finger," "Synchronicity II," "Every Breath You Take"
Asia - "Heat of the Moment"
Forest for the Trees - "Dream"
Blur - "Girls & Boys"
U2 - "Numb," "Lemon," "Even Better Than the Real Thing"

Dud:

Peter Gabriel & Kate Bush - "Don't Give Up"
Huey Lewis & the News - "Hip to Be Square"
Wang Chung - "Everybody Have Fun Tonight" (personal nominee for bottom 10 video of all-time)
U2 - "Stuck in a Moment You Can't Get Out Of," "The Sweetest Thing," "Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me"
Sting - "Fields of Gold"

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Monday, 11 July 2005 14:34 (twenty years ago)

They were going to do a film of "Consequences".

Until that record umm did not sell. At all.

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 11 July 2005 14:36 (twenty years ago)

"Girls On Film" and "Two Tribes"? I wonder if Lol and Kev' sit down to watch WWF on Saturday mornings, too...

Also, totally forgot they did "Rockit" — in tow w/ "Only Time Will Tell" by Asia, it seems their early vids all had this raw 8mm thing going on...

And to be clear, the X-rated version of the "Relax" video was by Bernard Rose, not them.
