Not totally lost, as it made No. 24 in Billboard and is readily available on any Box Tops hits record, but still little discussed and never heard on oldies radio. Terrific record, one of their best -- very delicate compared to their bigger singles.

Never heard it. Sounds good though

Sure. I could listen to this kind of stuff all day.

i have this song but i can't remember what it sounds like. is this the version of the box tops that's all session musicians?

I believe so. It's their second single -- my guess is that the session guys were already subbed in.

i'll never understand why some people write sentences in title case. (insert inevitable obnoxious comeback about writing in lowercase.)

Why make fun at all?

Michael Costello (MichaelCostello1), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 00:10 (twenty years ago)

i was just curious.

One of my favourite American Studios recordings. Not as great as Brenda Lee's "Do Right Woman", or Dionne Warwick's "A Hard Days Night", or Elvis's "Stranger In My Own Home Town" or "Son of a Preacher Man", but right up there.

Allen Baekeland (Allen Baekeland), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 00:18 (twenty years ago)

They play it frequently on my local oldies station (CISL 650). There's a good Petula Clark version on her memphis album.

it's a great song, love the guitar coda at the end, and the drumming. pretty sure this is Moman's American crew of Reggie Young, Gene Chrisman, etc. actually, I find the Box Tops amazingly consistent--other minor classics are "Sweet Cream Ladies," "Turn on a Dream," "Fields of Clover" and "I Met Her in Church." Chilton sounds so ironic and so young, very strange combination for a guy who is indeed so young, like 16 or 17.

Been checking out Joe Tex's later albums, mostly done at American. Very cool indeed, some amazing guitar playing that often imitates roosters and chickens, in the Texian universe.

Probably my favorite Alex Chilton song and one of my most played songs of all time. I really like the contrast between the acid, dry sound on his pronounciation of the lyrics and the playful, elegant arrangement. He will be sorely missed.

Definite Neil Diamond thing going on in this song - and in "Soul Deep" - and, of course, Neil Diamond had been recording at American Studios. Or you could say Neil Diamond had been influenced by recording at American Studios but, hmmmmm, I don't think so as much.
