er, wait, this should be on ILM.

hahaha well fuck it it's a good thing to discuss anywhere! first two lps = classic.

-- hstencil (hstenc!...), July 12th, 2005 9:52 PM. (hstencil)

I had a burn of one of their albums, and it was pretty awesome. I lost it a few years ago though, and I really only remember the first song, which sounded like the "single" -- something like "Together ... forward we go. Forever ... like it was before."

-- Hurting (Hurtingchie...), July 12th, 2005 9:58 PM. (Hurting)

Oh, apparently it was called "The Message," as I just found out from the iTunes store.

The Amazing Jaxon! (jaxon), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 04:24 (twenty years ago)

i've been a huge fan for many years. first picked up the first album because of the De La sample. i have a double cd with the first three albums and unfortunately they get worse as time goes on.

i told stence a while ago that if you're into them you might like Osibisa. they're an african band that moved to London and mixed psych rock, funk and traditional music. and they have roger dean album covers. i wouldn't say they're anywhere as good as cymande, but usually the records are less than 5$

The Amazing Jaxon! (jaxon), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 04:28 (twenty years ago)

Just yesterday the first two LPs by this band were STOLEN off of the wall from the store at which I work.

Is this sentence correct?

Dereks Erdman, Tuesday, 12 July 2005 04:28 (twenty years ago)

which store? that sux. that's like 70$ loss, huh?

The Amazing Jaxon! (jaxon), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 04:31 (twenty years ago)

oh, and Oneness of Juju are pretty great too. funky jazz and african percussion.

The Amazing Jaxon! (jaxon), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 04:33 (twenty years ago)

oneness of juju! jaxon i was gonna ask if you liked them. also the pharoahs.

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 04:35 (twenty years ago)

i omly know bra by cymande. i think. is that them?

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 04:36 (twenty years ago)

One was $25 and the other was $15.

Stuff like that just happens, really. I try not to let it get the best of me.

Dereks Erdman, Tuesday, 12 July 2005 04:36 (twenty years ago)

how do you steal a couple of records off the wall?

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 04:40 (twenty years ago)

with your hands

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 04:42 (twenty years ago)

i omly know bra by cymande. i think. is that them?

yeah, that's the De La sample. i've never listened to the pharoahs. isn't that where Derf Reklaw is from? arent' they more recent?

gary, round two. you'll like it.

The Amazing Jaxon! (jaxon), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 04:45 (twenty years ago)

oh, the Pharoahs weren't recent. they were what became EW&F's horn section? crazy. you know i saw that reissue around so much in the 90s on the Ubiquity sublabel i just thought it was a new "acid-jazz" record or something. and Derf is still playing the LA scene. i was just all confused.

also, how dumb is his afrocentric name? Derf Reklaw-Raheem

yours,
Nosaj Worrad

The Amazing Jaxon! (jaxon), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 04:56 (twenty years ago)

haha. i have a derf record. on ubiquity. man j i just converted the rest of the psych soul disc and i'm pretty excited. 2 eddie gale discs???? i go back to work tomorrow which means listening time again.

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 05:00 (twenty years ago)

stenbce i worked in a place where someone stole a fucking lawnmower...but taking two overpriced records off the wall? where were the staff?

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 05:02 (twenty years ago)

o my...fred walker? fer fucks sakes.

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 05:03 (twenty years ago)

"Bra" = godlike.

"fug" = even better.

"dove" = even better still.

"The message" = Perfection.

Really great group.

"Brothers on the Slide"!

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 11:32 (twenty years ago)

Great stuff--fans of Funkadelic, JB, Meters, etc. need to hear this band. Is anything available in the US right now? I got a UK comp that has the first three albums a few years ago.

Keith C (kcraw916), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 11:42 (twenty years ago)

Isn't there another recent compilation with more previously-unissued music? I got their first album by mistake - I thought I was buying a Tasavallan Presidentti record but the first Cymande LP was inside. I loved it, though, and probably never would have known about it if left to my own devices. I found the third one for very little in a charity sale and really like that one, too - the arrangements are more diverse, and I'd always assumed, when I heard a song of theirs was used in a movie, that it had to be "Brothers on the Slide", because it sounded like it could easily be very popular. I bought the UK compilation CD to get the second album and am interested to know about the existence of more recordings.

Pangolino 2, Tuesday, 12 July 2005 12:43 (twenty years ago)

There's an actual compilation called "Brothers on the Slide" that came out earlier this year, it's really good, it's subtitled "The Story of UK Funk", has other artists on it. The Cymande track on it is probably the best, I must check out some of their other stuff.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 12:45 (twenty years ago)

Wow - I've just looked online and found that there's apparently a fourth album called "Arrival" that was recorded but until recently unissued as well as a compilation called "Renegades of Funk" with otherwise unreleased songs (I haven't seen whether those were from "Arrival" or not).

Pangolino 2, Tuesday, 12 July 2005 12:58 (twenty years ago)

I just have the Best Of CD, which is actually a mish-mash of the first two records, but it's hooray-inducingly amazing. CLASSIC.

A track was in that 25th Hour film in the Disco scene as far as I can remember. Was that Bra? Been a long time since I saw the film but that struck me. Possibly cos I had the 2cd set.

checking Amazon prives the set looks OOP unfortunately.

Nothing against the article, and thanks for the link, but I hate presumptuous, patronising headlines like this.

This is just anecdotal, but I feel like over the last decade or so "Brothers on the Slide" has become more of a retro-funk staple — I hear it on the radio and even out in stores and so forth.

Cymande is led by its founding members Patrick Patterson (guitars, vocals) & Steve Scipio (bass, vocals). The band also comprises long time members, Keyboardist Adrian Reid and vocalist Raymond Simpson, with the full complement of players being Richard Bailey (Drums), Donald Gamble (Percussion), Denys Baptiste (Saxophone) Kevin Davy (Trumpet) and Toni Kofi (Saxophone).

New album is called Renascence. US tour and later a European tour

curmudgeon, Thursday, 6 February 2025 05:12 (eleven months ago)

much of their new album Renascence features a more sedate soulfulness, but songs “Sweeden,” and “How We Roll (feat. Jazzie B.)” showcase in parts a lively up-tempo brand of jazz-funk that is more distinctly their own
