Should we do an "Anticipating Jarvis' TV moments" type thread?

He's going through the best/most notable moments in Pop History, off the telly, as a late night programme.

Hang on, I'll look it up.

Ah, here we are...

When? Thursday 14 July, 10.50pm
Where? Channel 4

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 08:39 (twenty years ago)

Apparently not terribly well anticipated, but I'm about to start watching it, so will dutifully revive in the hope it's worth posting about (I fear not, I worry Jarvis may have just been a cheaper option than Jimmy Carr to spout pointless "remember when someone swore at Five Star on a children's telly phone-in, wasn't it funny" type nostalgia)

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 14 July 2005 20:53 (twenty years ago)

not sure ending on a dreary mike skinner performance was the best way to say 'pop tv is still risky/interesting/captivating'.

yeahyeahyeah (yeahyeahyeah), Thursday, 14 July 2005 21:56 (twenty years ago)

pop music tv has always been rubbish hasn't it? apart from those random shows that have a band that become legendary later on. though jarvis was right, everything's just so safe now.

jellybean (jellybean), Thursday, 14 July 2005 22:04 (twenty years ago)

tony wilson was saying kids today will get their thrills and excitement in the same way older generations did.

yeahyeahyeah (yeahyeahyeah), Thursday, 14 July 2005 22:06 (twenty years ago)

Better than I expected. Living in France can't be good for Jarvis as he looked even rougher than lairy old Francis Rossi. Some fantastic footage, both familiar (Revolver/Jerry Lee Lewis in 64') and new to me (Twiggy and Brian Ferry singing Sam Cooke horror show).

Was that really Jack Good as the bonkers monk? My word, I think he'd been drinking some 6.5 special.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Thursday, 14 July 2005 22:08 (twenty years ago)

I really enjoyed this

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Thursday, 14 July 2005 22:48 (twenty years ago)

That was brilliant, but what a terrible ending.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 14 July 2005 22:58 (twenty years ago)

Agreed

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Thursday, 14 July 2005 23:20 (twenty years ago)

This looked great on the telly in the Piper with the sound turned down and subtitles on. I realised I quite like Jimmy Saville, we were all amazed Pete Murray was alive, my Gary Numan loving mate got all excited when he came on, then it got turned off and we had a lock-in and got very drnuk. What a surprise that Jarvis should be interested in Pop and not boring bollocks.

Also, The Lords rool.

Taste the Blood of Scrovula (noodle vague), Friday, 15 July 2005 01:06 (twenty years ago)

repeated soon on e4 (21:10 Saturday) and well worth a watch.

koogs (koogs), Friday, 15 July 2005 08:51 (twenty years ago)

Incase anyone is interested you can get a good quality DVD boot of the first series of Revolver (8 Eps) from some dodgy bloke in Camden.

mzui (mzui), Friday, 15 July 2005 08:55 (twenty years ago)

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 15 July 2005 09:09 (twenty years ago)

.. tried e-bay, not a tickle...

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 15 July 2005 10:20 (twenty years ago)

.. tried again, and YES!

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 15 July 2005 10:26 (twenty years ago)

Day is now officially MADE!

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 15 July 2005 10:29 (twenty years ago)

Well done!

mzui (mzui), Friday, 15 July 2005 10:31 (twenty years ago)

Peter Glaze singing "Golden Years" on Crackerjack! You couldn't make it up could you?

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 15 July 2005 10:32 (twenty years ago)

(What's he on about? Oh yeah, the Jarvis prog)

I didn't actually see it, but will on e-4, thanks for the info...

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 15 July 2005 10:35 (twenty years ago)

I think that Mr Glaze left Crackerjack before he could do "Sound And Vision" of which I have a horrible half-memory of being performed by the Krankies.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 15 July 2005 10:38 (twenty years ago)

"The Laughing Gnome" would have been tailor made for the Krankies

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 15 July 2005 10:39 (twenty years ago)

That Bowie rendition on Crackerjack was genius. I wish I'd have taped it so I could rip it to mp3!

Also thought ending with that Streets clip was a bit odd. Enjoyable program overall, though thought it slightly hypocritical Jarvis complaining about music videos and marketing taking over Pop TV when he made lots of (some quite good) music videos with Pulp. Not that I disagreed with him, I suppose.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Friday, 15 July 2005 10:45 (twenty years ago)

NB: please do not watch the videos and listen to the music at the smae time.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 15 July 2005 11:01 (twenty years ago)

Saville "at the moment my bedroom walls are already complaining because i'm only allowed to have lovely young ladies in here, not gentlemen. you're the only other man who has ever been in this room"

er, yes *shiver*.

jed_ (jed), Friday, 15 July 2005 12:45 (twenty years ago)

Plus if Cocker was so bothered about corporate takeover music on the box, he'd have never done Britpop TV with Damon Albarn.

Or that banking advert, for that matter.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 15 July 2005 12:49 (twenty years ago)

The banking advert was music taking over corporate TV, right?

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 15 July 2005 12:51 (twenty years ago)

If you missed it, the horror of Golden Years on Crackerjack in full.

http://tv.cream.org/specialassignments/themes/glazepop.ra

You'll need realplayer unfortunately.

Jimmy Saville was on top form in the show. The bit where he showed Jarvis the weird stuff people had made him was gold, especially the poster for Apocalypse Now Then.

Stew (stew s), Friday, 15 July 2005 23:48 (twenty years ago)

The Krankies did Starman - it was on Room 101 a while back - but they may well have brought their unique stylings to Sound & Vision as well.

Stew (stew s), Friday, 15 July 2005 23:52 (twenty years ago)

Do you mean Britpop Now, Dom? That wasn't corporate per se, it was a Later... type special presented by Damon Albarn show casing "Britpop" bands which was still at the nebulous stage where it could take in I dunno but I'm sure there was some wild card Portishead type inclusion.

The Jive Session (elwisty), Saturday, 16 July 2005 21:16 (twenty years ago)

No, no there wasn't. They had Marion instead.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 16 July 2005 21:25 (twenty years ago)

Don't be flippant William.

The Jive Session (elwisty), Saturday, 16 July 2005 21:33 (twenty years ago)

Right, I have seen it now.

Umm, in Jarvis' defence, the Streets clip showed TV could still be good, rather than that clip being 'how far we've come' greatness.

Did I mention I found a 3 dvd set of Revolver on e-bay?
