WHITEY

I just heard Whitey's album again ("The Light At The End Of The Tunnel Is A Train"), and I can't understand why aren't they bigger now in the UK?
One of the best records of 2005, definitely.

one possible reason - record label is a tough bugger to get through to.

as i loved the EP last year, i tried to track down review copies of the albun and was bounced all over the place.

in the end i gave up.

shame as i suspect the album would indeed be great ..

they got signed by bonjour records in Japan so the Japanese album has more tracks.
This is also one of my favourite of this year...
And i could see them live at Primavera in Barcelona. They were quite amazing too (which i did not expect). Also dont know why they don't get more coverage...

One reason is also possibly that Nathan Whitey is one of the world's biggest assholes, is impossible to deal with, cancels shows left right and centre and has one of the worst reputations of anyone in the music industry.

Yes, he did seem to have an attitude problem during the show... But they sounded so good that i could tolerate it...
The drummer particularly was very good...

i loved them when i saw at great eastern hotel in london. but i heard the nyc show sucked. there was no band, he performed with backing tape and the band pretended to play. or something like that.

that's what happened in glasgow - i couldn't believe how great they sounded but i realised why soon after. i suppose i still loved the gig though and i do think the album is great. one of the best of last year.

three years pass...

Kinda think for the title track alone this is a bit of a lost gem.

it's a great record. apparently there's a new one on the way this year?

juniper jazz (haitch), Sunday, 3 May 2009 04:07 (sixteen years ago)

Why is there not a digital copy of the track he did with Erol Alkan ("Do the Nothing") anywhere? All I can find is a shitty vinyl rip!

six years pass...

So in 2012 I backed Whitey on a Kickstarter to make a new album, estimated delivery Mar 2013. Upper tier subscribers (not me) bought an upcoming box set of all his releases on vinyl for £150, ltd ed stuff, etc etc etc. Delivery date came and went, one update a month later, still going. Excuses sent 9/2013, 2/2014, 10/2014, then announced he was done 3/2015. Except, still nothing at all - no music, no physical releases, nothing at all. Then, five years of total silence, message board on the Kickstarter fills up with angry messages, nothing happens.
Then yesterday - after SEVEN YEARS - this email. I'll be interested, but I'm sceptical.

ALL PLEDGES FULFILLED FROM JULY 21ST- WITH EXTRA MUSIC AND GIFTS FOR ALL PLEDGERS.

ALL PLEDGES UPGRADED.

ALL CATALOGUE RELEASING ON STREAMING SERVICES.

ALL CATALOGUE AVAILABLE ON VINYL AND CD.

NEW LABEL, NEW WEBSITE… AND NEW MUSIC

Greetings from the Bunker.

Firstly, I thank you all for your incredible patience, and huge respect to those who kept their cool and showed such endurance. As regards my prolonged silence, I took a necessary break from social media whilst I planned, negotiated, designed, manufactured and prepared all of the above. I’ve also built my own label from scratch, and assembled a global team to make it work. I’ve built a website, and the whole catalogue will now be available to stream and buy- first album up today, see below. There’s also new music coming- a lot of it. Starting with the surprise album ‘NOW THAT’S WHY I KILLED MUSIC’.

The end results are way beyond what was promised, and every pledger has been upgraded.

Here’s how:

Firstly the ‘booklet’ evolved, and eventually became a large format hardback book of lyrics, flyers, photos and art, designed by myself. Every single pledger is thanked personally inside. This first ‘Black Edition’ will not be reprinted, and will be signed to you all personally before dispatch.

All digital pledges will have their reward doubled and receive two download albums- and a digital PDF of the book.
All CD album pledges will receive an extra digital album download, and a PDF copy of the book. Luxury CD album pledges get the same, plus free merch and a t-shirt voucher to redeem in desired print, style and size online.
All CD boxsets now contain all albums as promised, some in Extended Editions, adding 10 extra tracks to the set. These boxes now also contain the album ‘SEVEN’ and the new album ‘NOW THAT’S WHY I KILLED MUSIC’. CD boxset pledgers have also had their booklet upgraded to the signed hardback book, plus merch and a t-shirt voucher. This box will be personally dedicated and signed before dispatch.
CD ‘metal box’ pledgers have been upgraded to the the luxury box, with extended and extra albums and the hardback book included, plus merch and the t-shirt voucher. This box will be personally dedicated and signed before dispatch.
LUXURY VINYL box tier have had their five disc pledge doubled to TEN discs- and we’ve produced several albums as Rare First Edition runs. ‘GREAT SHAKES’ is now a luxury triple disc gatefold, CANNED LAUGHTER is a Limited double white vinyl, and ‘NOW THAT’S…’ is in Limited Cherry Red vinyl. The box set contains all Whitey albums, including Seven, plus the signed hardback book, merch and a t-shirt voucher. This will also be personally dedicated and signed before dispatch.

In recognition of their support, all pledgers are now lifetime honorary members of our ‘Outsiders’ mailing list and free music club room- where I will be sharing and mailing free music from ongoing sessions and albums.

It’s been a long road from that first gamble to here- it ended up taking longer than WW2, and it cost me twice the Kickstarter money to do it, but it was worth it. I’m the label now- I can release what I want, when I want, where I want. I’m free.

For now, that is all. Please visit the links below, or CLICK the image above to see all stock.

Keep safe, and stay on the outside. I mean... inside.

I got that too and my reaction upon opening the email was "oh right, that guy!"

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 30 May 2020 03:23 (five years ago)

Seems like he's been through some stuff so I gotta respect standing back up and seeing it through - if he finally does.
