Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 16:16 (twenty years ago)

Can someone explain the appeal of "All She Wants Is" to me? I've tried for years and I can't find anything in that song to enjoy.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 16:24 (twenty years ago)

Dan, it's a throbbing, funky BEAST -- add 5x more screaming and it almost could have been a Nine Inch Nails song from the same time period.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 16:26 (twenty years ago)

But it's a doped-up, pokey incoherent beast on quaaloudes and boring juice!

(The NIN comparison does give me something to think about, though.)

Unsurprisingly, I think the lists so far overrate "Rio" and underrate "I Don't Want Your Love".

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 16:28 (twenty years ago)

I definitely think they peaked with Seven and the Ragged Tiger, though "Hold Back the Rain" and "The Chauffeur" would be in the top three had they been singles. And "I Take the Dice" is one of my guiltiest pleasures ever.

1. New Moon on Monday
2. Union of the Snake

5. The Reflex

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 16:31 (twenty years ago)

My attempts to avoid Duran Duran in the '80s (and in the years since) appear to have been successful, as I'm only familiar with about half of the songs I see here.

Short list (roughly in order):

Girls On Film
Notorious
All She Wants Is
Planet Earth
Wild Boys
Hungry Like The Wolf
I Don't Want Your Love

The rest, I don't know well enough to rank. And I *hate* Rio.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 16:32 (twenty years ago)

i'm going on pure sentiment. rio was the first album i heard by them, and whenever i think of duran duran the vision from the video of simon leaning into the wind on the foredeck of that sailboat pops into my head

wayward son, Tuesday, 12 July 2005 16:33 (twenty years ago)

Crap, The Reflex would be toward the bottom of my list. x-p

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 16:33 (twenty years ago)

13. A View to a Kill
14. Notorious
15. New Moon On Monday

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 16:34 (twenty years ago)

why isn't there more love for "A View to a Kill"? The Bond connotation? It's probably their best production, and easily one of their best songs.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 16:36 (twenty years ago)

"Notorious" is also mind-bogglingly brilliant.

I think I wouldn't be so averse to "Rio" if it hadn't been played five times at every single college party I went to, regardless of demographic. (There's nothing more irritating than a large number of people who can't dance deciding to play the shit out of a song done at a BPM that's not the easiest to dance to, then jump up and down like idiots while braying the chorus and throwing beer on each other.)

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 16:47 (twenty years ago)

1. Hungry Like the Wolf
2. Rio
3. Save a Prayer
4. Notorious

6. New Moon on Monday
7. Girls on Film

I Don't Want Your Love
Skin Trade
Is There Something I Should Know?
Union of the Snake
All She Wants Is

Lyra Jane (Lyra Jane), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 16:50 (twenty years ago)

The Reflex seems to be underrated. I love the breakdown after the "flex-flex" part, impossible-to-dance-to dancing bit.

I also prefer All She Wants Is over I Don't Want Your Love in terms of tracks from Big Thing.

Viz (Viz), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 16:57 (twenty years ago)

Hahaha - I'd almost swear I went to school with you

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 17:23 (twenty years ago)

Duran Duran have gotta be one of the all-time great intro bands. The shutter clicks in "Girls on Film," the girl chuckling in "Hungry Like the Wolf," "RE-FLEX-FLEX-FLEX-FLEX-FLEX," "NO-NO...NOTORIOUS!," "WILD BOYS! WILD BOYS! WILD BOYS! TOK-A-TOK-A-TOK TOK-A-TOK-A-TOK," the slamming intro to "A View to a Kill"...all fantastic, totally make the songs.

The only thing more irritating being the guy who hates them.

Rob Uptight (Rob Uptight), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 22:05 (twenty years ago)

or the guy who hates him.

Aaron A., Tuesday, 12 July 2005 22:13 (twenty years ago)

MY list would be very nearly the same as Lyra's above, with "Union Of The Snake" and "Is There Something" tossed in there somewhere. Just like most of the other Brit invasion/MTV darling bands of the same period (Culture Club, Eurythmics, Thompson Twins), I LOVED the first song I heard, and then liked each subsequent single a little bit less (altho some later grew in my later estimation.) "Hungry Like The Wolf" and "Rio" epitomized the Duran sound that I treasured most, with those great disco basslines and chattering synths or sequencers or whatever they used.

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 03:39 (twenty years ago)

their best song was "serious" but i'm too late.

simon le rhodes, Wednesday, 13 July 2005 04:33 (twenty years ago)

1. New Moon on Monday (surprised to see this at the bottom af many lists)
2. Hungry Like the Wolf
3. A View to a Kill
4. The Reflex
5. Save a Prayer
6. Rio
7. Skin Trade (I like it because it has a cool chord change)

9. Planet Earth
10. All She Wants Is
11. The Wild Boys
12. Girls on Film
13. Union of the Snake
14. I Don't Want Your Love
15. Notorious

Favourite non-eighties single: "Violence of Summer". "Serious" is pretty good too.

daavid (daavid), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 04:53 (twenty years ago)

the slamming intro to "A View to a Kill"

Classic! And the coolest intro to the opening credit sequence of a James Bond movie ever.

I used to love Rio, but the chorus sounds really cheesy and annoying to me now.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 11:06 (twenty years ago)

I'd say the major Duran Duran '80s singles were all rank, as indeed were the minor ones, boom boom.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 11:11 (twenty years ago)

Search:
1. Planet Earth

13. Skin Trade
14. All She Wants Is

Destroy, destroy KILL KILL KILL:
15. Is There Something I Should Know?

If we were allowed to add later stuff, Electric Barbarella and Ordinary World would be top 5, as well. Come Undone would also be top 10.

MIS Information (kate), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 11:12 (twenty years ago)

That's Planet Earth with the LONG intro, right?

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 11:14 (twenty years ago)

The spacerock-synth-drone Planet Earth. But of course.

MIS Information (kate), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 11:15 (twenty years ago)

I absolutely ADORE "Ordinary World" and "Come Undone".

zeus, Wednesday, 13 July 2005 13:10 (twenty years ago)

I love the long versions (night versions?) of "Girls On Film" and "Planet Earth" more than anything else I think. I'm not terribly familiar with their stuff post-Rio (apart from "The Reflex") though.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 13:17 (twenty years ago)

1. Save a Prayer (no doubt about it)
2. Rio
3. Union of the Snake

17. Is There Something I should Know?(I don't get it)
18. All She Wants Is(Crap)

Jun Misumi, Wednesday, 13 July 2005 13:36 (twenty years ago)

I hate "Rio," "Wolf" and "Girls on Film" all in the same way. There's something about the chorus melodies that makes me feel nauseous. It could be the particular vocal harmonies they use.

So, for me, it's "Save A Prayer" (for the plinky arpeggios), then "Ordinary World," "Come Undone," and that's it.

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 13:38 (twenty years ago)

No love for "Meet `El Presidente'"? Shame!

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 13:43 (twenty years ago)

their two big 90s singles were pretty great, though I'd still prefer pretty much anything from their '83-'86 run. "Too Much Information," on the other hand...yowzah. Too hott.

Shall I be the first to profess my love for their "White Lines (Don't Do It)," then?

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 14:43 (twenty years ago)

The clip of Duran on Letterman performing White Lines (with Grandmaster Flash!!) has to be seen to believed. The world is still not ready for the tanktop Simon wore – and his dancing.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 14:49 (twenty years ago)

yikes.

I find it sort of amusing how quickly Duran Duran squandered the good graces they won with their 90s comeback. Couldn't they have at least squeaked out another album of proto-"Barely Breathing"s before throwing in the commercial towl?

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 14:51 (twenty years ago)

1. Skin Trade
2. New Moon on Monday
3. My Own Way

The rest can go swing.

Ohmigod, I remember this. I remember staring in horror at the television and waking my housemate to make sure that I had not hallucinated it.

MIS Information (kate), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 14:56 (twenty years ago)

Is this available online anywhere?

More ambitiously, is it available as a pairing with Billy Squier's "Rock Me Tonite" vid?

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 15:40 (twenty years ago)

15. I Don't Want Your Love

07. New Moon on Monday
06. Is There Something I Should Know?
05. Save a Prayer
04. Girls on Film
03. Hungry Like the Wolf
02. Planet Earth
01. Rio

I rarely liked much that the band did after "Rio." Sure some of the singles were enjoyable, but nothing the band ever did was as strong as those first two albums.

Brett Hickman (Bhickman), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 15:54 (twenty years ago)

I really think that single-wise, they didn't hit their peak until post-Rio.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 16:28 (twenty years ago)

and I totally disagree.

Brett Hickman (Bhickman), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 16:35 (twenty years ago)

10. Is There Something I Should Know?
11. Rio
12. All She Wants Is
13. The Wild Boys
14. I Don't Want Your Love
15. Notorious

This has made me realise that many of my favourite tracks as a young'un were not the singles. And I didn't realise "Meet El President" was a single; seemed like a lesser album track from memory.

Nag! Nag! Nag! (Nag! Nag! Nag!), Thursday, 14 July 2005 06:38 (twenty years ago)

what are the good non-Rio album tracks?

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Thursday, 14 July 2005 12:22 (twenty years ago)

Plenty: "Friend of Mine," "Is There Anyone Out There?" "Hold Me," "Vertigo (Do The Demolition"), "Of Crime & Passion"....

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Thursday, 14 July 2005 12:27 (twenty years ago)

interesting. We'll see when I get home (YSIs maybe?)

Buying Decade recently was one of the smartest decisions I've made this summer. It's like thier Substance (though it peaks in the middle, instead of at the two ends). 10.0.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Thursday, 14 July 2005 12:30 (twenty years ago)

It is pretty consistent. The only reason to purchase the new greatest hits is to own "Come Undone" and "Ordinary World."

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Thursday, 14 July 2005 12:46 (twenty years ago)

they had both at the store, but Decade was $4 and Greatest was $8. I decided that "New Moon on Monday," "Ordinary World," "Electric Barbarella" and "Come Undone" were not worth a dollar each.

They really should've done a two-discer and included all the marginal singles, as well as key album tracks, b-sides, etc.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Thursday, 14 July 2005 12:52 (twenty years ago)

One of the best tracks they ever did I feel was a B-Side, Khanada... I know there are daft lyrics but, I still love it. That should have been a single... Faster Than Light and Late Bar were pretty amazing as well. I did not really like much of their output after Rio honestly...

sooo

1. Planet Earth (for Late Bar as well... fucking ace)
2. Careless Memories (because of stated B-Side)
3. Girls On Film
4. Rio
5. Save A Prayer
6. Hungry Like The Wolf
7. My Own Way
8. Union of The Snake (only because of Secret Oktober...)

HAVE ALWAYS ABSOLUTELY DETESTED Is There Something I Should Know and hated the american re-issue of the self-titled record back in the day with it on it. Absolutely dire.

Daniel, Esq., Monday, 5 October 2009 02:05 (sixteen years ago)

Wish they had followed-up the sound of their spin-off band, Arcadia. Their one album (So Red The Rose), was a deeper, darker Duran. It was a v. good album.

Daniel, Esq., Monday, 5 October 2009 02:41 (sixteen years ago)

So Red the Rose is cocaine-and-eyeliner Fairlight excess of a kind we don't simply don't get anymore. I'm not sure how I feel about that either. Saying it isn't very good is beside the point, innit?

"The Chauffeur" was their best ever moment, but was never a single. "New Religion" is also f... great.

Tied Up In Geir (Geir Hongro), Monday, 5 October 2009 10:03 (sixteen years ago)

Oops. Didn't see "80" up there. Well disregard those three 90s ones I felt like I had to mention then. This has all of their 80s singles in it though.

Tied Up In Geir (Geir Hongro), Monday, 5 October 2009 10:04 (sixteen years ago)

And I love "So Red The Rose" btw. Excellent album almost all the way through. And the last classic Duran Duran sounding album before they started sounding like Power Station instead.

Tied Up In Geir (Geir Hongro), Monday, 5 October 2009 10:05 (sixteen years ago)

"The Chauffeur" was their best ever moment, but was never a single.

It was the b-side for 'Rio', albeit a different version.

Peinlich Manoeuvre (NickB), Monday, 5 October 2009 10:12 (sixteen years ago)

Suprised at all the "Something I should Know" dislike. I quite like that song, it's a great 80s stadium stomp.

There's nothing wrong with 'A View to a Kill' ... I can think of far worse songs from Seven and the Ragged Tiger and beyond.

Kitchen Person OTM about 'Last Chance On The Stairway' being their best song. It's one of my favourite songs of the '80s, too.

View To A Kill is one of my favourite Duran Duran songs...

Best to worst:

The Reflex
Rio
New Moon on Monday
Planet Earth
Save a Prayer
Union of the Snake
Hungry Like the Wolf
Skin Trade
Girls on Film
Notorious (list goes from 'good' to 'OK' at this point)
My Own Way (the version Rio is one of my favourite DD songs but not a fan of the single recording)
All She Wants Is
A View to a Kill (not terrible but tainted by the Live Aid performance)
The Wild Boys
Careless Memories
Is There Something I Should Know?
I Don't Want Your Love

I can't remember the others, in fact I'm not sure I've ever even heard Meet el Presidente...

The drums on "A View to a Kill" sound like wet cardboard.
