whos a good kompakt style dj? or, the difference between producing and djing

question:

if you were to promote a party in the north of england with a remit of:
"a more fun event than the heavy techno nights we normally do, to bring the girls back and the house into the room, on a minimal/electro tip (eg....kompakt duh)", who would you book?

dj t?
booka shade?
ada?
m.a.n.d.y?
jeff samuel?
a voight? (getting back to the tech thing?)
a dahlback?
any m_nus people?
the problem is, i can think of loads of people who make awesome records, but am not sure if, for instance you book dj koze to play, what hes like as a dj. which of the german (by which i mean anyone from any of these countries) axis are good djs as well as producers? or just as djs?

nathan fake?

this is for uh...a friend. (no really)

also, im curious as to how promoters resolve the (as perceived by me) tension between booking producers with recognisable names who will get the crowds thru the door, and booking djs who will play a wicked fun set when the crowds are already inside. as these two things maybe not always be the same thing.

ambrose (ambrose), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 18:29 (twenty years ago)

ok to kick it off, i heard good things abotu inaqui marin at sonar, (i miseed him cos id never heard of him), and now listening to his track on fabric23, this is the sort of badass shit i want! would he be a good booking?

ambrose (ambrose), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 18:30 (twenty years ago)

ada and booka shade would be good picks, i think.

i definitely do not equate m_nus with girls.

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 18:52 (twenty years ago)

My pick would be DJ Koze, he's an excellent DJ and will spin vintage soul, hip-hop and banging cologne Techno. There's a ~3 hour video of one of his sets at Betalounge.

Jena (JenaP), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 18:58 (twenty years ago)

REX. THE. DOG.

No one man has crammed so much raw FUN into a techy/electro set than he (Fabric room 3 in March or so), everyone was asking who he was, especially the girls. plus I didn't see him take his eyes off the crowd once, sign of a respectable (sorry) dj indeed.

mark burton (kingofnothing), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 19:03 (twenty years ago)

!!!! a 3 hr video!!!
wicked thanks

ambrose (ambrose), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 19:04 (twenty years ago)

Sylvie Marks?

I was completely addicted to this mix (http://www.sylviemarks.de/okt04.html) a while back. New one each month on her website if you wanted to see where she's at more recently, they are nearly always minimal & tech-y but also fun and girly-house inclined too (more than you'd expect from her Bpitch Control associations).

Chloe?

French DJ, had a mix cd "I Hate Dancing" out that got a lot of attention, afaik draws from both the french house and german minimal/tech scene (allegedly, haven't heard the disc myself).

I'm probably being very stereotypical thinking that a female DJ might attract more girls. The North? I might yet come to this :)

fandango (fandango), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 19:08 (twenty years ago)

To be totally gimmicky you could always have a all-female night... sneaking Magda in to bang some heads together/keep the techno boys happy, possibly avoiding the m_nus geek factor a bit.

fandango (fandango), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 19:14 (twenty years ago)

For what it's worth: I saw Michael Mayer on I Love Techno 2004, and it was the worst performance I experienced that night. Very monotonous and boring, not at all like I expected. Didn't get the crowd moving at all, and he pretty much only looked down to the decks. To be fair, he did experience some sound problems, but when those were fixed he didn't quite get things going again.

Siegbran (eofor), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 19:20 (twenty years ago)

If you book Magda, I'll come.

I'd still rather be in Tokyo (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 19:23 (twenty years ago)

Miss Dinky appeared to be going off when I saw her @ Maria. Lots of fun, not pounding, but very very rhythmical, in a very direct kinda way. I had to leave half way through (at 3 am ffs!) or I wouldn't have caught my plane home that morning :""(

She's also put out two original production albums, first one on Traum. Hmmm. She's from Chile though... I guess the Chile-Berlin connection could be a 'draw' for the crowds (i.e Villalobos).

fandango (fandango), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 19:31 (twenty years ago)

from that list - dj koze, no contest. he's a great dj and great fun too. or, for a live show ada who apart from being great will bring the girls into the room as girls love to see other girls peforming. years ago i used to put miss djax on and the front rows of techno trainspotter boys always became a sea of girls instead.

the voigts don't dj.

stirmonster (stirmonster), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 19:33 (twenty years ago)

oh, and nathan fake only plays live too.

also, im curious as to how promoters resolve the (as perceived by me) tension between booking producers with recognisable names who will get the crowds thru the door, and booking djs who will play a wicked fun set when the crowds are already inside. as these two things maybe not always be the same thing.

if you can build up a reputation for putting on a good night, people will start to trust your judgement and come along for the nights where it isn't neccessarily a big name playing. the big names will almost always pull in more people but the best nights (and the ones that last the longest) are the ones that don't play it totally safe with who they book.

stirmonster (stirmonster), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 19:37 (twenty years ago)

I found Mayer completely the opposite to that, maybe he was having trouble that night.. He was a great party dj when I saw him, jumping around and dancing like a madman, and being real friendly w/ the crowd. Mind you this was with an audience of about 300 people so maybe he felt happier to interact. He was still going mad at 7 in the morning with about 50 or so people left :D

My picks for the question though would prob. be MANDY, ada or maybe rex the dog..
Though I haven't seen any of em dj personally, that's just based on their musical style.

Bn1, Tuesday, 12 July 2005 19:38 (twenty years ago)

as a matter of interest, what bit of the north?

dhemingway, Tuesday, 12 July 2005 20:07 (twenty years ago)

I'm fairly sure I saw a Reinhard Voigt DJ set at Kom100? Was it actually a live set? it was very dark and I was near the back scoring pills.

I nominate Michael Mayer on this thread, I think he is the best populist and wacky DJ in a Kompakt style. I reckon MANDY otherwise. DJ T is kind of boy tech house a bit, it's almost his biggest failing (not that he's not great)

DJ Koze was excellent when I saw him (the best that night), but I have my doubts about him, for the purposes of this thread and otherwise. He is quite hard and acidy and not so much fun as Mayer for me really.

There must be others, actually Ambrose you should just book me.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 20:17 (twenty years ago)

i'm pretty sure reinhard only plays live but i could be wrong. wolfgang voigt doesn't perform at all any more.

i would also nominate mayer over koze but he wasn't in the list ambrose posted. saying that, the one time i heard koze, he had a distinct pop edge to him.

but yeah, book ronan and watch the girls swoooooon.

stirmonster (stirmonster), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 20:21 (twenty years ago)

haha I mix now! swooooooooooon

yeah I guess Koze played "Voyager" by Daft Punk and other stuff that night, he plays alot of stuff which is not conventionally Kompakt, like more electrohousey in a way.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 20:26 (twenty years ago)

i definitely do not equate m_nus with girls.

i do! ive never seen more booty shaking than at the m_nus night i attended. well at least not at a minimal party

fe zaffe (fezaffe), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 20:40 (twenty years ago)

God, I wish I could go to m_nus parties.

I'd still rather be in Tokyo (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 20:47 (twenty years ago)

haha ronan its not me! i did say it was for a friend. in fact it is for the people who do Darkside in Leeds, they are looking at doing something new.

ronan what us yr night called again? my friend is going to dublin in the next month or so

i imagine mayer would be extremely expensive, but obviously he is good. well, not obviously, but he was great when i saw him, which was gaes ago. its was realyl euphoric and trancey.

as for promoting. i guesss the trick is (maybe rather obviously) get fun people to play and build a rep. as a side issue, what percent of people at clubs do you think actually know whos playing?
eg for fabric, it would be fairly low (30%?)

ambrose (ambrose), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 20:49 (twenty years ago)

our night is Backlash, www.backlash.ie

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 20:54 (twenty years ago)

mayer is not as expensive as you might think although his fee has gone up about 50% in the last 18 months.

as for the % who know who is playing - i imagine it is often quite low. i put on a one off night here with basteroid a couple of weeks ago. it sold out but i bet you 90% of the people there had never heard of him before. even when we put on mayer and had heavily promoted it i had a fair few people asking me who he was.

stirmonster (stirmonster), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 21:01 (twenty years ago)

it's the same with us, I think if you're in a small venue it's extremely likely particularly if you've built your night up with the residents, everytime we have a guest somebody (not the same person each time) will say to me "yeah it was good but not as good as a normal night", this is good I suppose for us.

I'm not hugely experienced in running stuff, not by any means, but I know what my eyes tell me and I would say to your friend, ambrose, to be wary of using guests to get the night going, we didn't have a guest for about 15 months, alot of the nights in Dublin seem to rely totally on guests and there seems to be no real core of people who go there.

I think it's especially important to do a residents thing and really really be a "club" if (a)it's in a small venue and (b)it's not on a saturday or friday night.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 21:09 (twenty years ago)

Highfish? I saw him play a bit in Berlin and he was really good, spacious German electro-house bliztniz etc. I'm not sure if Geeta was so enthused but she'd been going hard all week and was pretty tired by that point I think.

He had a mix-cd out about 4 years ago called Nighteffect which I never bought but looked really good.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 21:37 (twenty years ago)

chloé?

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 21:39 (twenty years ago)

jennifer cardini!

fe zaffe (fezaffe), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 21:45 (twenty years ago)

ronan totally otm about how to build up a core audience.

i played with highfish once. really good and different to most of his fellow (overtly minimal) berlin record spinners. jennifer cardini and chloe are great too.

stirmonster (stirmonster), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 21:46 (twenty years ago)

To make things worse, I think I was getting her mixed up with Jennifer Cardini - http://www.beatfreax.nl/index.php?s=7130928523&rid=403

xpost - fezaffe yes!

fandango (fandango), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 21:48 (twenty years ago)

I'm sort of curious as to the tracklist of the Chloe mix CD I must have seen sometime now...

fandango (fandango), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 21:50 (twenty years ago)

riton i heard dj and was pretty fun.

for m_nus, marc houle and heartthrob are pretty great.

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 21:51 (twenty years ago)

yeah i think they want to build it up, just want to have a plan. they have been running big techno nights for ages, had daniel bell last year and was the best night ive been to for ages.

this is the main dance floor! i really like the venue
http://www.thenorthernlight.co.uk/images/7_northern_300x225.jpg

ambrose (ambrose), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 21:57 (twenty years ago)

thnx for all the sugegstions

anyone heard either of the dahlbacks play? which one does what?

and...inaqui martin?

ambrose (ambrose), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 22:02 (twenty years ago)

Haven't heard Inaqui Marin play but he makes great records! Maybe he's a bit like Sami Koivikko (also great DJ!!!)???

Chloe was excellent when I saw her, actually very populist, played all the big electro-house hits of the time - The Sky Was Pink, The Abwehr Disco, Sweat on the Walls...

M.A.N.D.Y. were also really good until they turned tedious in the last half an hour or so with boring prog-tech. Bad venue though sadly, which interfered with things a bit.

Jennifer Cardini's mix-cd which apparently came out recently (in Europe only??) looks fabulous.

In terms of other female DJs in this vein there's Acid Maria (who seemed quite good when I peeked in on her intermittently while being captivated by Schaeben & Voss) and Electric Indigo (awesome but a lot harder and more intense)...

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 22:10 (twenty years ago)

i heard a bit of jesper dahlback in barcelona on saturday night. it was VERY techno and hard but he was playing in the techno room so maybe he tailored his set for that.

stirmonster (stirmonster), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 22:21 (twenty years ago)

When I saw Reinhard Voigt in NYC, he opened with a DJ set and then switched to live halfway (although you wouldn't be able to tell if you were just hearing it and not seeing his smooth transition from the decks to the laptop.)

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 00:56 (twenty years ago)

How about Steve Bug? He seems to know how to mix the minimal and techy stuff into the more fluffy stuff.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 05:26 (twenty years ago)

Plus if your mate got him to play (or DJ Koze) and it was in Leeds, I might come up for it - I've been meaning to come up for a while.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 08:01 (twenty years ago)

jesper dahlback plays mainly his own productions, svek and things like that. i wouldn't bother with john, simply because all his productions are go-nowhere ditchwater.

Barnaby (Barnaby), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 08:13 (twenty years ago)

think both are hugely overrated myself

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 08:32 (twenty years ago)

Ooh or Emma Jean from NZ/Japan but now residing in Cologne I believe...
She plays a good mix of Kompakt related material, and would be less expensive than the likes of Mayer.

Bn1, Wednesday, 13 July 2005 09:42 (twenty years ago)

re: ronan's statements re: guests...I find it a bit of a catch 22. For those of us who DJ all the time, sometimes it's hard to get people excited, they take you for granted, oh I can go anytime he's always djing. It's like you have to bring in a guest to make it seem exciting, even when 80% of the time nobody knows who the guest is, it still SEEMS exciting. So then more people show up because now it's an EVENT...then they all come up to you to tell you how much they hate the guest and "hey, why aren't you DJing?"

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 13:01 (twenty years ago)

haha

promotion sucks :( does it?

ambrose (ambrose), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 13:45 (twenty years ago)

http://www.jennifercardini.com/

no doubt. the latest edition to the Kompakt Sound System.

david day (winslow), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 14:15 (twenty years ago)

Jennifer was mixing with Michael Mayer at primavera this year. I was too tired to really enjoy (after long flight) but they really engaged with the crowd and the audience really got into it.
Both Chloe and Jennifer Cardini CDs are good. But Chloe is more "for the house" and Jennifer "for the floor"...

Arnault (arc73hk), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 14:40 (twenty years ago)

everyone otm about Jennifer Cardini - I'd never hard of her before I went to see her DJ at Fabric the other weekend (I was there for Ada and M Mayer) and she was fabulous.

DJ Koze is wonderful, yes, as are Superpitcher and Ada.

I saw Iñaqui Marín in a basilica at Sónar and it was a fucking incredible experience - dark, banging and intense but also pretty populist.

surprised no one's mentioned Miss Kittin or Ellen Allien yet - Kittin especially is always really reliably ace.

I've never seen DJ T but his cousin came up to my friend who was DJing in 93 Feet East last night and insisted that she play something off his new album, which she'd never heard, and it was fantastic!

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 14:42 (twenty years ago)

promoting does indeed suck, but it's part of the game, and sometimes you meet people. Recently we've been taken to handing out fliers DURING the party, down the street. The funny thing is some people counter with their usual response to fliers "oh, I'm from out of town", meaning, i won't be hear next week or whenever, and we get to respond, "no, this party is happening RIGHT NOW!"

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 14:43 (twenty years ago)

jennifer cardini has awesome tattoos!

other than that i don't have much to add except that if i was doing this i would try to book someone who actively djs rather than an artist who only occaisonally djs. that said, every time i've heard superpitcher, he's been great. (and the ladies like his stuff, too)

how about james holden?

i like the idea of an all girl night. i have heard great jennifer cardini and chloe mixes, but i still haven't heard a mix by magda that has really blown me away.

tricky (disco stu), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 19:50 (twenty years ago)

I thought James Holden would be good.

think both are hugely overrated myself

I'm so pleased someobody finally said it!

Felix Leiter (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 19:57 (twenty years ago)

I guess if E. Allien was asked specifically to play a more lighter, housier, poppier "more fun" set she could (something like "Fleig Mit" or her FIB '04 set which is about the sunniest thing I've heard from her). That isn't how these things normally work though is it?

I just interpreted the question to mean Ambrose wasn't looking for someone with a noted leaning towards the more melancholy, dark end of minimal/electro stuff.

fandango (fandango), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 20:35 (twenty years ago)

haha Adam I'm sick of them hanging around like a bad odour, go away Dahlbacks!

that's funny Dan we always do flier runs on the night of the show too, just before the club starts and also to restaurants and bars where people finish work at 12.30 or whatever. though I hear you about getting people to come out, I feel embarassed sending mass text outs now cos it's like "yeah we can see you anytime", even though most of my friends have never come to see me.

They go to see friends who are in bands almost religiously and yet have maybe once ever come to my night, I'm sure there's a good reason for this but I never worked it out! Most of them either like or are not openly adverse to the music we play too.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 14 July 2005 08:18 (twenty years ago)

i've heard v good things about sammy dee (half of pantytec) - he's meant to be a big party animal too. i always think this is as important as the performance aspect, really - if you want to have a laugh

still, not actually heard him dj so hearsay only.

dick, Thursday, 14 July 2005 10:54 (twenty years ago)

For getting girls dance, I would propose Tobias Thomas of the Kompakt-Crew. He mixes the typical Kompakt-sound with Elektropop-Songs. I've seen lot of girls dance to his sets. You can check out his "Smallville"-Mix-CD on Kompakt.

djangojones (djangojones), Thursday, 14 July 2005 11:03 (twenty years ago)

Miss Kittin, DJ Deep, Ellen Alien, Dominik Eulberg, John Tejada, Neil Landstrumm, Reinhard Voigt, Riton, Savas Pascalidis, The Hacker, Superpitcher, Legowelt. I frequent the Darkside a lot i'd like to see some of these names on. They might not all be totally suited, just my ideas

club_casualty, Monday, 25 July 2005 14:23 (twenty years ago)

Also to add to the above Roman Flugel, Anthony Rother, Jack de Marseille

club_casualty, Monday, 25 July 2005 14:46 (twenty years ago)

i guess this night is under review seeing as darkside has stopped using northern light....great shame really

ambrose (ambrose), Monday, 25 July 2005 14:47 (twenty years ago)

T.Raumschmiere is another option if the night goes ahead

Daniel Holliday, Tuesday, 26 July 2005 09:29 (twenty years ago)

thanks to everyone for contributions. might persuade me back to doing an night

ambrose (ambrose), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 18:59 (twenty years ago)

Can I repeat again how good Steve Bug is at mixing the minimal stuff up with more conventional house and pop and waking everything really accessible? I was listening to a mix I have of his the other night and it reminded me of the way he was effortlessly able to manipulate the crowd when I saw him in Feb.

Hey at least there are transport links between those two after 12! Can't say that for everywhere up north.

If I even go it'll be because I can fart about at the afterparty and not have to sit in a fucking freezing train station till 7am before I can set off home again (the usual untempting option) :|

I don't think I am going though, I just might not be able to afford it, or it's gonna clash with friends that might be visiting so... :( basically.
