Because according to search, we've never had a thread dedicated to him! And also because his new Ray Charles tribute record is GREAT, way better than it had to be.

I heard he was working a project with Peter Stampfel to record one song from each year of the 20th Century. Although I think mainly it's his daughter that's involved.

The Ray Charles record sounds like it would be some stock shit on paper (Dr. John, Aaron Neville, Mavis Staples, and *cough* John Mayer on vocals, a "timely" tribute record, etc.), but it's as great as I can imagine it being. The arrangements are right on, it's tasty as fuck, and it actually sounds like they took the time to get the sound right. I could die in some of these handclaps.

Amazing guitar player and someone's who's never been afraid to take chances. Some of his records I find to be total duds (Works for Me for example), but every once in a while he really hits it. The funk stuff he's done recently has drawn a lot of heat but some of it (notably A Go Go) is very good.

I was listening to the first Soulive album a while ago, and he guests on one track on there. Their guitar player is very talented, but Sco comes on this track and tears the place to pieces with this shredder of a solo--you almost feel embarassed for the guy.

Scofield's compositions never seem to really keep with me, but he is very good guitarist. Bill Stewart is a total bad ass on the drums.

S: Besides the new one,
A Go Go' (did Medeski, Martin & Wood ever sound better?), 'Hand Jive' (Eddie Harris!), and 'Works for Me' (basically a straight-ahead blowing, but it's a great band that sounds really relaxed together, as well as being one of Billy Higgin's last records)

D: I dunno, I remember his 80s stuff like 'Still Warm' sounding pretty corny, and from what I've 'Uberjam' sounded like he was fucking around and shredding a lot. And it's called Uberjam.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 12:59 (twenty years ago)

My review of Uberjam in Jazziz was so negative it actually earned me an angry phone call from Scofield's wife.

Wow!

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 19:40 (twenty years ago)

Fwiw, I love the drummer from his Uberjam band (Adam Deitch). He's got a great track on the new Anthony Hamilton record.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 19:42 (twenty years ago)

The rap track on Uberjam is so craptastic that it's bound to become a classic at some point.

Phil shoots from the hip.

Search: the second Bass Desires record. Chris Dahlen could probably go on about this at some length...

I myself thought Time On My Hands wasn't bad — s'pretty straight ahead.

I found an older John Scofield trio CD from the 80s called Shinola this week. The record is pretty good with Adam Nussbaum on drums and Steve Swallow on bass. I swear the title track Shinola sounds a bit like The Minutemen.

That seems to be the thing with Scofield albums, the guy will have one tune, usually a throw away on each record where he will kind of get the band to kick out the jams and I wish the whole record was that way. There is some bonus track on one of the Blue Note albums with Joe Lovano, Jack DeJohnette and Charlie Hayden that also kicks out the big funk.

There is also John Scofield's Tone: Classic Sound or Some Ol Bullshit

Love this, put it in the column of minimal, intimate pandemic records along with Jeff Parker, Brandee Younger, etc.

On the other side of the spectrum we have Harry Connick Jr's terrible pandemic record, where he basically tried to be a whole big band by himself.

Mentioned before on some other threads, but the album Hudson he did a few years back with Jack DeJohnette and some other neighbors was a great example of jazzy/fusiony guys playing rock tunes.

I loved that album at the time and saw that band live - they were great.

Finally got around to checking out Scofield's 2009 excursion into New Orleans music and gospel flavors "Piety Street". That record sounds ridiculously good. Being that it is based around gospel, it's not a full fledged New Orleans funk record, but it has some killer grooves.

It was also one of those records that just the sheer way it was recorded and detail was really amazing. You can tell they broke out the old organs as you can hear it in the growl and grunt. Just a killer drum record both by Shannon Powell's playing and the the sound.

Love that record. Too bad the studio (Piety Street) isn't around anymore.

The guy that recorded it's name is James Farber, which even as a liner notes nerd, the name never jumped out at me.

Looking the guy up, he's got a pretty eclectic and interesting discography of records he worked upon.

For you music writers, this is a dude that might make a killer interview.

Dude worked on Kurtis Blow and Philip Glass records and the Boss' The River among a boodle of others...
Just sayin' pro writer people around here.

Glenn Branca AND Al Jarreau AND a Jane Fonda workout record...

earlnash, Sunday, 17 September 2023 04:20 (two years ago)

I think he has all those eclectic credits because he worked as an in-house engineer at the Power Station, which of course is/was a pretty busy place!

Pretty good (tech heavy) interview here:

Cool, thanks. I've read Tape Op for years but do not remember this one. Guy definitely seems like a serious pro.

"And, of course, the people in the jazz business are the greatest. Aside from being super-talented, they're interesting and smart – great people to have a lunch break with. Conversations go everywhere. It's still a lot of fun. Sometimes I think back on it, and I wish that I had brought a camera around with me and documented all this stuff. I wasn't thinking along those lines while I was going through it all, but now reflecting on it, I'm pretty grateful for the experience."

earlnash, Sunday, 17 September 2023 14:14 (two years ago)

Cool interview, I'd love to hear some of those Haitian compas records he talks about.

50 Favorite Jordans (Jordan), Sunday, 17 September 2023 15:02 (two years ago)

In that interview he talks about Madison a lot: "When I graduated college in '75 I hung out in Madison for a while and worked in listener-sponsored radio."

I thought it would be cool to ask a WORT (surely the station he's talking about) old-timer if they remembered him. Coincidentally, later that same day I was at a local festival and was introduced to a DJ who's been at the station for 50 years...and he did not remember James Farber, lol.
