This is probably the best brasillian song ever made.

What does everyone else think?

Michael Costello (MichaelCostello1), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 03:16 (twenty years ago)

Stirmonster agrees with you!

I'd still rather be in Tokyo (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 03:17 (twenty years ago)

I like it a lot but OM have better songs than that

tremendoid (tremendoid), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 03:36 (twenty years ago)

The 1971 version of "Baby" . . .

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 04:56 (twenty years ago)

Hardly a "lost classic" what with the Bees' cover version, etc.

I always thought it sounded like the missing link between the Tremeloes and "Jeepster."

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 04:59 (twenty years ago)

Lost?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 05:13 (twenty years ago)

well its not like its a song recognized by average households across the world.

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 05:22 (twenty years ago)

99% of all pop music to thread.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 05:23 (twenty years ago)

If ou ask a normal person (no one like us) about this song, they'd said "A What-a Men-What-a?"

It's lost.

Michael Costello (MichaelCostello1), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 05:45 (twenty years ago)

my own definition of "obscure" is that if an average of zero people out of ten (use your own barometer; the denominator can be people in industrialized nations, etc etc) have heard of some band, they are OBSCURE.

peter smith (plsmith), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 05:58 (twenty years ago)

so this track was written by Jorge Ben. was there ever a version of his recorded?

The Amazing Jaxon! (jaxon), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 06:08 (twenty years ago)

If ou ask a normal person (no one like us)

but you're asking us. i'm sure more than 50% of the board has heard this song. that is not lost in the least

The Amazing Jaxon! (jaxon), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 06:09 (twenty years ago)

i have a belle & sebastian cover of it on mp3.. its fun. i guess it was at their sao paulo show. crowd goes buck wild.

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 06:11 (twenty years ago)

That whole album was just Cover Songs (except for 2 songs or something)

I don't think Jorge Ben released a version of it. Maybe a live version of something with Caetano Veloso or Gilberto Gil.

Michael Costello (MichaelCostello1), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 06:12 (twenty years ago)

Nine out of ten people have never heard of "What's Going On" by Marvin Gaye, so that must be obscure.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 06:47 (twenty years ago)

Nine out of 10 people in Mongolia?

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 07:02 (twenty years ago)

But yeah, as a rule of thumb, if David Byrne has rereleased it, it probably can't count as lost.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 07:05 (twenty years ago)

I think it best to interpret "lost classics" as meaning in this context "great songs ILXors may never have heard (of)."

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 07:46 (twenty years ago)

it's a cute song but not a 'lost classic' in my book. and definitely not the best brazilian song, that's just insane.

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 07:53 (twenty years ago)

this song has been on an advert = it is not a 'lost classic'

Ward Fowler (Ward Fowler), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 08:28 (twenty years ago)

it's the best dance song om ever made but not necessarily their best song. i'd say it was a lost classic in that os mutantes should be a household name but aren't, that almost everyone who hears this song falls in love wih it but that sadly not that many people have heard it.

x post. the song on the advert was a cover version.

stirmonster (stirmonster), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 08:33 (twenty years ago)

Ten years ago, it was a lost classic, along with the other tracks of theirs.

Now, it is a found classic, along with the other tracks of theirs.

Hooray for finding things.

xpost yeah the bees.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 08:34 (twenty years ago)

Now, "Norman Stanley Jones St Clair" by the Tremeloes - there's a lost classic.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 08:42 (twenty years ago)

AAAAAAAAAAnyways, this song rules.

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 13:17 (twenty years ago)

Great song - in fact I listed it on my blog a few days ago as one of the top five songs I'm listening to right now: http://o_nate.pitas.com/

o. nate (onate), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 13:29 (twenty years ago)

I used to play it quite frequently on my radio show. Which means I think it's classic, anyway.

Deric W. Haircare (Deric W. Haircare), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 16:20 (twenty years ago)

yah, one of my faves of theirs, though they've probably got slightly better stuff. currently on the brasiliana tack i'm loving jorge ben's "zumbi"

M. White (Miguelito), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 16:42 (twenty years ago)

There's a crazy version by a brazilian "choir" called Open Field Church wich is quite unique.

Ghost, Wednesday, 13 July 2005 17:15 (twenty years ago)

it sounds like the theme to Wacky Races.

bill neil (inabillity), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 17:27 (twenty years ago)

it's on the jukebox at daddy's.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 17:30 (twenty years ago)

I like it fine, but I don't consider it a lost classic. It's not even my favorite Mutantes song. It's not even my song written by Jorge Ben with "menina" in the title.

k/l (Ken L), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 17:33 (twenty years ago)

I like how every aspect of the thread title (whether the song is lost, whether it is a classic, and whether it is by os mutantes) has been called into question.
I dont know why I like it, sometimes you just like things, ya know? I like you guys.

matlewis (matlewis), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 18:58 (twenty years ago)

For instance, Samba Esquema Novo has "Rosa, Menina Rosa," "Por Causa De Você, Menina" and, my favorite, " Menina Bonita Não Chora."

k/l (Ken L), Thursday, 14 July 2005 01:04 (twenty years ago)

It actually IS my favorite Os Mutantes song, and one of my favorite summer jams. Not lost, but a classic.

Scott CE (Scott CE), Thursday, 14 July 2005 01:30 (twenty years ago)

Alright, can I dud the version on the "Technicolour" CD? "She's my choo choo" indeed!

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 14 July 2005 07:08 (twenty years ago)

Ralph Wiggum to thread.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Thursday, 14 July 2005 07:44 (twenty years ago)

Oh this track was on constant rotation in the Dog Latin household that I nearly got banned by girlfriend and flatmates for playing it. It really is that good!

dog latin (dog latin), Thursday, 14 July 2005 07:51 (twenty years ago)

OK, what did you think when you heared the Bees version? Mine was "Oh so they did record an english version at the time!" (ie Mutantes)
