The Next Round of Musical Downsizing

Continuing where the "What are the last 5 CD's you got rid of?" Thread left off...
Take another look at your collection. Now, if you had to liberate some spending money by hocking some more of your music, which CD's/Tapes/LPs would be victims of the NEXT cull?
To make it interesting, lets say you have to cut at least 10. (This should make it interesting for the ILM'ers who are actually "12-CD" people.)

Or if you're really ambitious (or broke), what 3 box sets would you sacrifice?

Lord Custos, Thursday, 7 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

10? Well let's start with the five that I've been considering dumping:
"XTRMNTR",
Superchunk's "On the Mouth",
Modest Mouse's "The Moon and Antarctica",
The Boo Radley's "Come On, Kids"
and MSP's "The Holy Bible". Then, some lousy indie stuff from 2/3 years back:
Wheat,
The Wrens,
The first Built to Spill album,
The Hang Ups
and Mercury Rev's "Deserter's Songs."

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Thursday, 7 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

dump 'em Mitch, they're all awful!

gareth, Thursday, 7 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I've considered getting rid of any CD whose band or artist contains a mid-20's almost balding white guy, with glasses, wearing a button-up dress shirt from a thrift store who went to college at some liberal private haunt with a "unique" music program.

That would leave me with a Howlin' Wolf CD, I think.

Gage-o, Thursday, 7 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Not that I'll probably ever get rid of 'em but here, in the words of Gruppo Sportivo, are 10 Mistakes:

"Wu Tang Forever"
Directional Force (aka Dave Clarke) - Peel Session EP
some American Music Club LP
a Sarah records compilation LP
Sonic Youth - A Thousand Leaves
a Meredith Monk LP
John Scofield - Quiet
Sidi Bou Said - Bodies
Delicious Monster (one CD + a 12")

You can tell how attached I am to these that I can't even remember the titles in some cases.

Jeff W, Thursday, 7 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The opposite of "< B >" is "< /B >" duh

Jeff W, Thursday, 7 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sorry!

Jeff W, Thursday, 7 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Get rid of CDs? Eh? No WAY. But if I was forced to (at gunpoint for example) then I'd probably sell the Elephant Suxor CDs (including the On Avery Island CD). Complete utter SHIT. Same goes for DoTheCollapse by Guided by Voices. Urgh....

helenfordsdale, Thursday, 7 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

5 (7) must do
- Souled American: Frozen (sounds like cows farting somewhere in the midwest)
- Tarnation: Little Creatures (?) TERRIBILE what a bloody female country voice
- Bruce Springsteen: Born to Run (Probably this album condenses best why I dislike most of the 70s music. Unbearable. Partly because of the Spector-like over-production.)
- Incredible String Band: 3 CDs under which "The Hangman's Beautiful Daughter" (What a load of rubbish. What did the critics ever see in this?)
- Neil Young: Harvest Moon (probably his worst album together with "Trans")

alex in mainhattan, Thursday, 7 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I've been downsizing like a motherfucker all week. I wanted some new music, but I'm broke. I've sold:

Dr. Octogon - I think I listened to this once since I got it a couple years ago.
Circulatory System - It sounded OK, but I realized I'm very, very far from the E6 vibe these days.
Amon Tobin - Bricolage - This never clicked w/ me.
John Coltrane - Greatest Hits - somebody bought this for me a long time ago & I kept it b/c it's my only CD w/ the studio verson of "My Favorite Things" - I'll just get that album one day.
Dismemberment Plan - ! - the first album I bought by them. I've since grown to like the band a lot, but this record just isn't very good.
Dire Straits - Making Movies - I loved this album in High school, but probably haven't listened to it since the 80s.

Mark, Thursday, 7 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

alex in mainhattan sold only albums that I enjoy!

Sterling Clover, Thursday, 7 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I know I'm getting rid of
Beta Band: The 3 EPs.
Clinic: Internal Wrangler
The Get Up Kids: Whatever it's called

Sean, Thursday, 7 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yesterday i got rid of:

massive attack - 'teardrop' (since i have it now in the singles box)
apples in stereo - discovery of etc etc (because it's shit)
live human - elefish something (boring boring scratch-jazz album)
executive lounge - executive lounge (boring boring 75ark hiphop album, i liked encore and architect before so why are they so shit in this awful crew?)

in exchange i got: kevin blechdom - the inside story. i am happy with this.

ethan, Thursday, 7 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

jeff w:

a Sarah records compilation LP

which one? - i'll take it...

g, Thursday, 7 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sean: I think I want the Beta Band and Clinic CDs.

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Thursday, 7 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey, I love that Sidi Bou Said record (however, I haven't listened to it since 1997).

I have a vague plan that when all the shelves are full (maybe 18 months' time), I will finally start discarding the trash, like (scans alphabetically):

All Because The Lady Loves The Amps Breakbeat Era Courage of Lassie Delicatessen Det Wiehl Grifters The Happy Family (sorry Mr Currie) Omoide Hatoba Mark Isham Caroline Lavelle Gary Lucas A load of Lush singles The Moon Seven Times Mum (not the Icelandic band) Shudder To Think Georgina Starr (possibly the worst record I own) That Dog. Ut The Werefrogs

Sorry, that's twenty and I haven't got to the compilations yet. Seems to be a pattern in my choices - no jazz (well, apart from Isham), no classical (perhaps cos I imagine, as neglected as some of those records might be now, I could find something of worth eventually) and nothing that would break up the harmony of a set of similar looking labelmates, like the more useless em:t releases.

New listening project for February: all of the above, in order.

Michael Jones, Thursday, 7 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, format it yourselves...

Michael Jones, Thursday, 7 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Weird that Jeff W mentions "Wu-Tang Forever" now I'm rediscovering it (Ethan's high rating + constant listening to the new Wu and Ghostface). "Deadly Melody", wow!

I don't sell CDs, as I mentioned on ILE I'm far too much of an inveterate hoarder. But if I did sell any: the second Trembling Blue Stars album, the Sneaker Pimps single I once bought (fuck knows why), Common's "Like Water For Chocolate", something or other by DJ Krush, the odd best-forgotten 90s single that I can't remember buying at all.

Robin Carmody, Thursday, 7 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

**sounds like cows farting somewhere in the midwest**

alexinmainhattan - you just made me laugh out loud!

I'll get onto Uncut right now - this sounds just like Jonesy's thing!

Dr.C, Friday, 8 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

people who hate wu-tang forever are insane.

ethan, Friday, 8 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Of course they are Ethan = I wuv it

Robin Carmody, Friday, 8 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ut? Who's getting rid of Ut? You don't get rid of Ut! You give ME Ut! (Unless it's _In Gut's House_. Then you give it to someone else.)

David Raposa, Friday, 8 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It is In Gut's House and I may very well give it to someone else. However, I'm 19 albums away from listening to it in February's Reassess Rubbish campaign, and I reserve the right to change my mind.

Michael Jones, Friday, 8 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

See I have my fiance's cd's mixed in with mine and last week i eliminated some of her "Hanger-Ons" and some of mine.

Jewel Lemonheads Kitchens of Distinction Third Eye Blind Korn Mighty Mighty Shittones Chemical Brothers Aphex Twin (talk about a headache in a plastic case) Buffalo Tom Counting Crows (Mr Jones is dead) Asia (why i still owned the first cd I ever bought still amazes me, probably because it was the first cd i owned) Sebadoh Walt Mink Wesley Willis Carol King RHCP (everyone of their cd's) 311

skinflute, Friday, 8 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hmm, there's LOADS of stuff on this thread I'd happily buy! Perhaps this explains why I have ridiculous numbers of cds I want to get rid of. I'd post a few, but there are loads, half of them would get me ridiculed forever for buying in the first place, and it's probably not in keeping with the spirit of the thread to list some if you have vast amounts of stuff you'd gladly part with if only you weren't so lazy.

Rebecca, Friday, 8 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i bought both
candiria - 200 percent destiny and
in flames - live in tokyo
after reading a article on metal. they're both leaving the collection.

chaki, Friday, 8 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

one year passes...
