Eureka! I have just worked out where Antony (of The Johnsons) has copped his "unique" vocal style.

Take a listen to The Dark End Of The Street, by Roy Hamilton. Uncanny, I'm telling ya...

(Or you could just dig out your copy of Dave Godin's Deep Soul Treasures, Volume 4. It's Track 23.)

That's weird. I was convinced that Antony got his vocal stylings from the Rob Schneider character on SNL where he's a Subway Performer.

"Please Give Me Money"

"My Lady Story" reminds me of Van Morrison circa Astral Weeks

Tiny Tim? Nah, too falsetto.

I've checked some other Roy Hamilton material, and the resemblance is much less pronounced. But the opening lines of this particular recording are quite astonishingly similar. He MUST have heard it...?

Roy Hamilton's vocal style was also said to be a great influence on that of Elvis (listen to his take on "Unchained Melody" and you'll see what I mean). Is this a unique double?

Actually, "Unchained Melody" was one of the other Hamilton tracks I listened to... and yes, the Elvis similarity is pronounced.

"Blue Moon" maybe? (I haven't listened to the track above, yet)
