STING, SUMMERS AND COPELAND -vs-
NUMAN, GARDINER AND LIDYARD
1978 ENGLAND

Disregarding all that happened afterwards, how do we all stand on two trios presenting UK punk-rock with new wave nuances circa 1978??

whilst I had both of these LPs on my little danset back as a rather stroopy 11 year old in 1978 I will have to vote for Tubeway Army

That first Tubeway Army has mentalist lo-fi production - it is sample heaven for fans of clangy cheap drums. I say this one is right down to the bar. I can't decide.

yup, this is a tough one.

ZionTrain (ZionTrain), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 21:12 (twenty years ago)

C'mon, no contest - Tubeway Army by a mile.

Soukesian, Wednesday, 13 July 2005 21:19 (twenty years ago)

Only know (and love) the singles of the first one, but even if all songs had the caliber of "Roxanne" or "Can't Stand Losing You", they don't have that menacing edge that makes "Tubeway Army" such a great album.

But Gary Numan ALWAYS wins these contests. These contests are STACKED. No-one can defeat the Gary!

Too bad Ned is overseas.

Anyone else heard the "Zero Bars" sample that Sir Mix-A-Lot used?

ZionTrain (ZionTrain), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 21:34 (twenty years ago)

As far as albums go, Numan will always beat The Police... until 1980.

I would rate Synchronicity over Warriors (both 1983), definitely.

(Would I rate Ghost In The Machine over Dance though? Good question.)

Anyway, Tubeway Army beats almost any punk/rock album from the time, really.

That said, Outlandos D'Amour is still The Police's best album... the only problem with the album are the two dull singles "Roxanne" and "Can't Stand Losing You".. if they had just put the "Fallout" single in there instead, this might be a harder debate. I mean "Next To You", "Peanuts", "Sally..".. all great great songs.

the Police can't touch the first three Gary Numan albums.

This is white reggae versus white electro whiteyness from whiteysville:Kodwo Eshun's More Brilliant Than the Sun to thread.

Soukesian, Wednesday, 13 July 2005 21:55 (twenty years ago)

its humans vs the machine..

ZionTrain (ZionTrain), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 22:11 (twenty years ago)

oh here we go again.... ILM hate the popular .... ILM hate the technically proficient ..... ILM hate STING .... why put him in the mix? He will always lose due to how much he is detested around here.

raggle dreadnut, Wednesday, 13 July 2005 22:18 (twenty years ago)

think of how many titles from tubeway army would have fit as titles on the police debut:

listen to the sirens
something's in the house
the dream police
the life machine (police sometimes carry defribulators in their cars)
zero bars (jail.. ?)

oh here we go again... reactionary snarkiness based on a very short attention span and not actually reading the posts above shocker.

I like this theory of Gary Numan not being popular.

donuty! donuti! donuté! (donut), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 22:23 (twenty years ago)

or not being technically proficient, for that matter. (he may have hated Sting though, haha)

donuty! donuti! donuté! (donut), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 22:23 (twenty years ago)

also, Police != Sting.. jesus.
