You know the sort of thing: "The Day I Lost My Pastels Badge"; "I Want To Be Grant McLennan"; "Where On Earth Is Kevin Shields?".....other examples, people?

"i know somebody who knows somebody who knows alan mcgee quite well"- the pooh sticks "wheres duglas?" - the duglasettes denim's entire career.

All on 7":

"Calvin Johnson has ruined rock for an entire generation" by Alan Licht.

also

"Alan Licht has ruined rock for an entire generation" by Free Kitten.

"Just Gimme Indie Rock" by Sebadoh. (i'm ashamed)

and of course

"Winnipeg '64" by thee evaporators. although this song managed to transcend novelty hit status to reach what many consider "THE BEST SONG OF ALL TIME". a canadian history lesson, a study of neil young, and closing words that flip off acdc: "i cut down a palm tree and it landed on its baacccckkkkkk." (ref: "74 jailbreak")

paul, Wednesday, 4 October 2000 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

that annoying Helen Love single? what was it called now, that list song from a few years ago?

Also that song about John Kettley is a weather man

That Irish band from cork - Sultans of Ping - Where's me jumper? or something daft like that?

DJ Martian, Wednesday, 4 October 2000 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Bowie's song about Dylan.

Does the name have to be in the title, or can it be in the lyrics? Then all kinds of thing could be allowed. 'That phoney Beatlemania has bitten the dust', 'Was it a millionaire who said "Imagine no possessions"', 'Well! You could have belonged to Steve Earle', 'Listening to Arthur Lee records', etc.

But even those are not 'indie' references - is that a disqualifcation?

Transvision Vamp: 'Andy Warhol Is Dead' and 'Hanging Out With Halo Jones'. But I suppose they don't count cos they're not pop refs proper?

This is a fascinating topic but I am not 100% on the 'ground' 'rules'. As you can see. I think I have managed to score precisely nul points.

the pinefox, Wednesday, 4 October 2000 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

How about "Velvet Underground" by Jonathan Richman? Two indie prototypes rock, anyway.

"A spooky tone on a fender bass they played less notes and left more space stayed kinda still, looked kinda shy kinda far away, kinda dignified how in the world were they making that sound? Velvet Underground."

Mark Richardson, Wednesday, 4 October 2000 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

since it hasn't been mentioned yet teen anthems 'i hate oasis' tall dwarfs 'post-modern deconstructivist blues'

How about just about everything Ween has recorded?

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Thursday, 5 October 2000 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Built To Spill "You Were Right"

Sterling Clover, Thursday, 5 October 2000 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think this just goes to show that the entire history of indie music is a closed shop, one big navel gazing clique and its no wonder that most of the bands listed above have never actually had any pop hits.

I forgot it was Teen Anthem's who also did "Welsh Bands Suck" - which was on the A-side of 'I Hate Oasis'. Hence two of the smiles I got from said single probably came from the B-Side. I believe Teen Anthems also did "Paul Weller Is The Anti-Christ" - a sentiment difficult to disagree with even if the proof is more than shaky.

I've always considered the House Of Loves "The Beatles And The Stones" as a novelty record. Especially with the unsubstantiated rumours of them sucking the marrow out of bones. Possibly one of Ned's bad movies in that. ("Scream as the mop-topped chartbusters drain the very life force from teenage fans!")

Pete, Thursday, 5 October 2000 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Nor was I convinced by the claim that the specified South-East Asian country was called "Ietnam" until gargoyle-faced Guy Chadwick and his muckers came along to put the 'V' in it.

Further cross-breeding between songs already mentioned - that thing Peel used to play years ago called "You Suck" which went through almost the entire VU: "You suck / Lou Reed sucks / Sterling Morrison sucks / John Cale sucks / And he's Welsh!". No idea who it was by, though. Bleedin' indie music.

Tom, Thursday, 5 October 2000 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Where's Clare Grogan Now?" by The Fat Tulips springs to mind. I might own this record. But I suspect I traded it for a 3" CD comp of Polynesian FluJab, ooh, ages ago, before any of you were born.

See also: The Runny Noses' "I Stood Behind, And Slightly To The Left Of, Matt Haynes In A Lift" and A Teddy With One Arm's "My Cousin Uses The Same Sub-Post Office As Paul Haig (Or Used To, Before He Moved. Haig That Is - My Cousin's Still There)".

Michael Jones, Thursday, 5 October 2000 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"i can't find bouncing babies by the teardrop explodes" - the freshies

cw, Thursday, 5 October 2000 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

IIRC that suck song was by New Bad Things. I think it had that "Elvis was hero to most..." chorus.

Richard Tunnicliffe, Thursday, 5 October 2000 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

there is the pooh sticks 'on tape' as well where hugh pooh lists all the obscure records he owns but all on dubbed copies. counting th epooh sticks is a bit off though cause their existence was a novelty.

The whole Simple Machines "Working Holiday" 7" series. Even tho it is brilliant and wonderful and I love it so, it's still novelty.

flipper´s guitar have lots of references to eighties scottish pop like aztec camera, orange juice and more...

...and tony boy (monty) have written a song called "i like flipper´s guitar"

...don´t remember more...

Jens, Monday, 5 February 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Flipper's Guitar was Keigo Oyamada's incarnation in the pre-Cornelius years, wasn't it?

Robin Carmody, Monday, 5 February 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

exactly, great band....search on napster for it (the records are exspensive imports from japan only)

"We're the Replacements" by They Might Be Giants

Lord Custos, Tuesday, 30 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

this Gibby Haynes side-project ' P ' did a song called "Michael Stipe." Lyrical excerpts:

"I finally met Michael Stipe, he touched me on my arm ... Sophia Coppola looked at me, I didn't know what the hell to do .. [the chorus went] Michael Stiiipe, eye to eye .. Michael Stiipe, and I die tonight" or something like that

And he name-drops a bunch of other stars and paparazzi. The whole point, I guess, is to satirize a fallen star of indie iconography. But the song just wasn't that interesting, and came across as a petty swipe to me, not much different from the Stone Temple Pilots/Smashing Pumpkins lines in Pavement's "Range Life." The whole idea was undermined anyways by P's star-status -- besides being formed by Butthole Surfer Haynes, they had Johnny Depp on bass & guitar. Talk about the pot not seeing its reflection in the kettle ..

but maybe they got a karmic shock in return. They were playing the song live at the Viper Room, and River Phoenix was in attendance -- he'd never heard the song before, and it name-drops him as well. He died on the sidewalk outside, while they were playing ..

chris.

chris, Tuesday, 30 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Methinks the theme has shifted from "novelty" to "indie in- referencing," so I'd submit Yatsura's "Powerball," Black Tambourine's "Throw Aggi off the Bridge," and Nothing Painted Blue's "K for Karnival."

Nitsuh, Tuesday, 30 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

a lot of songs by the Television Personalities, starting with "Part-time Punks" jabbing at the kids who buy the Lurkers instead of the O-Level.

badger, Tuesday, 30 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I just read that Hole is recording a song called "Julian, I'm too old for you" or something, about the singer from The Strokes.

fritz, Tuesday, 30 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Shonen Knife" by Redd Kross, "Redd Kross" by Shonen Knife, "Silicon Teens" by the Pulsars, "Thurston Hearts the Who" by Bikini Kill, "I Wish I Was Him" by Noise Addict ("him" being Evan Dando.) And loads of Courtney Love-inspired songs. Like "Courtney Love" by the Action Swingers.

"Everywhere I Go I Hear the Go-gos" by Phranc. But that's probably too old to be considered proper Indie.

Arthur, Tuesday, 30 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

So much of indie strikes me as novelty records anyway. Sometimes in a good way, sometimes in a bad way.

Tom, Tuesday, 30 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Mary Lou Lord's "His Indie World" name drops about thirty bands. There's an old Pavement song about the Fall on some random bootleg which goes, "Mark Smith used to work for me.."

daria gray, Tuesday, 30 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

When He's By My Side by Trixie's Big Red Motorbike Mike Alway's Diary by Kahimie Karie

James Kyllo, Wednesday, 31 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

There's a whole mini-genre of songs about or mentioning Liz Phair, most of them deservedly unknown (one I remember called "Liz Phair Is My Sister," meant metaphorically). Though Heavenly did have that song "Snail Trail"--"Your in-car CD player/Is blaring out Liz Pha-ir/Blow queen/Ob-scene..."

All time greatest indie novelty, though, is the Freshies' "I'm In Love With The Girl On The Manchester Virgin Megastore Checkout Desk," closely followed by their own "I Can't Get 'Bouncing Babies' By The Teardrop Explodes."

MarkH, Tuesday, 13 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, this again -

"Sometimes I wish I was a pretty girl, so I could rape myself in the shower." - I don't remember who did it - minor 97x hit in 1986.

As was "Black Concert T-Shirt" by Chem Dyne.

Dave225, Tuesday, 13 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Sometimes I Wish I Was a Pretty Girl" -- that was Robyn Hitchcock in creepy-word-choice mode. Also improper non-use of conditional tense mode.

The Smiths "William it was Really Nothing"/Associates "Stephen You're Really Something". Bitches.

Silly Sailor (Andrew Thames), Monday, 9 February 2004 10:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Those only work if you know what they meant, of course, I have no idea if who Stephen meant was common knowledge at the time. Hopefully it was, tho.

Silly Sailor (Andrew Thames), Monday, 9 February 2004 10:33 (twenty-one years ago)

that annoying Helen Love single? what was it called now, that list song from a few years ago?

Mentions Johnny Cigaretts and Steven Wells... fuck, what was this?

Enrique (Enrique), Monday, 9 February 2004 10:34 (twenty-one years ago)

helen love - 'long live the uk music scene'

darren out of hefner's new band the french have a song called 'the wu-tang clan' it is the twee-est thing ever!!!

pete b. (pete b.), Monday, 9 February 2004 10:55 (twenty-one years ago)

the french are fucking awful

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 9 February 2004 11:53 (twenty-one years ago)

spearmint - 'the flaming lips'.

not really about the flaming lips, though they are namechecked. also, not very good.

hobart paving (hobart paving), Monday, 9 February 2004 12:01 (twenty-one years ago)

on the same album there's a song called 'scottish pop', namechecking a lot of scottish bands.

also:

tv personalities - where's bill grundy now?
sonic youth - under the influence of the jesus and mary chain

and there's a spanish band called the tea servants that had a minor local hit with a song called 'i wanna be jay jay johansson'.

joan vich (joan vich), Monday, 9 February 2004 12:04 (twenty-one years ago)

That Sy track's just an interview in French, tho

Silly Sailor (Andrew Thames), Monday, 9 February 2004 12:06 (twenty-one years ago)

on the same album there's a song called 'scottish pop', namechecking a lot of scottish bands.

oh yes, i remember that. i think that might have been the reason i purchsed the album...

'stephen pastel...raymond mcginley...'

and some others..

also, the tv personalities did one called 'i know where syd barrett lives' but i don't suppose that counts as an indie-reference. although - fey vocals; guitar-crunchy weirdness (that's a Technical Term); burned out after two albums - syd might have been indie before his time.

hobart paving (hobart paving), Monday, 9 February 2004 12:07 (twenty-one years ago)

and, while we're talking about the television personalities -

the aislers set - been hiding ('please help me, dan treacy')

i believe someone also did a song called 'i know where dan treacy lives'. not sure who, though.

hobart paving (hobart paving), Monday, 9 February 2004 12:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Talking of the Television Personalities, here are some of the lyrics to "Goodnight Mr Spaceman" (the version released as a single)...
Oh, the train's gone past my station
Oh bloody hell I wish I'd signed to Creation...
...Well I think I'll die of a broken heart
If my record doesn't make the indie charts
I'll do anything
I'll swallow my pride
Commit artistic suicide
And I dig St. Etienne, Denim and Suede
And naturally I go to the occasional rave
But when I was young it was Wizzard and Slade
Oh, this record is sponsored by Pepsi
I've taken three e's I still can't dance like Bobby Gillespie

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 9 February 2004 18:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Mr. T Experience did "i know where dan treacy lives"

jack cole (jackcole), Monday, 9 February 2004 19:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Jon Williams (ex machina), Monday, 9 February 2004 19:36 (twenty-one years ago)

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 03:24 (twenty-one years ago)

wow, old skool Nate post. I wish that Tullycraft song was a person and murder was legal and that I had a complete set of ginsu knives.

As yet unmentioned: The Flaming Lips' "Thank You Jack White For the Fiber-Optic Jesus". I'm waiting for Wayne and Jack and Beck to form some kind of inane Indie/College Rock Traveling Wilburys.

nate detritus (natedetritus), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 03:38 (twenty-one years ago)

what about that thing that Sebadoh did a while back... can't recall the album or the name of the track but it was like a rant about their fans and indie rock in general... like a spoken word kinda thing. they kept on referring to themselves as SSEBAAAAAAAADDDDDOOOHHHHHH!!!!

anyone have any idea of what i'm talking about?

ken taylrr, Tuesday, 10 February 2004 05:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Well Sebadoh did that one "Freed Pig", which was a nice bitchy number about one Mr J Mascis...

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 06:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I wouldnt call it a novelty track per se though.

DO they have to be about other minor indie celebs? What about novelty tracks that are just silly things, like that "Detachable Penis" song, etc?

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 06:53 (twenty-one years ago)

"bands from london are shit" by the mighty MJ Hibbett
