will we ever be able to *hear* 'no woman, no cry' again?

i can't listen to it with a straight face, which is a shame.

other songs that suffer from this sort of thing?

'this sort of thing'? i don't understand

gem (trisk), Thursday, 14 July 2005 06:24 (twenty years ago)

I feel the same way about a lot of the Beatles' catalogue. Not so much the straight face thing as simple inability to hear beneath the layers of history. But it's all about context. Hearing anything in an unexpected context or unguarded moment can bring it straight back to life.

president carter loves repetition (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 14 July 2005 06:56 (twenty years ago)

shit, i really want mac 'n' cheese now.

president carter loves repetition (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 14 July 2005 06:56 (twenty years ago)

best mac and cheese i've had lately was at this divey rubs joint in burbank called ribs usa. their ribs were accompanied by a small bowl of perfectly textured macaroni slathered in what was clearly very fresh, very recently melted and perhaps crumbled cheese. the perfect temperature, the perfect size in portion.

french fries were also served.

Gear! (Gear!), Thursday, 14 July 2005 07:07 (twenty years ago)

I have not been able to take the song seriously since Roy Hudd did a version of it for The News Huddlines, retitled "No Kidney, No Pie."

Working at a bar tends to kill a lot of songs...

-Any song on "Legend", except for "Exodus", which is good, b/c that's one of my favorite Marley songs
-I Feel Good - a seriously great song and a heavyweight r&b workout, but I've heard that song so damn many times
-With a Little Help From My Friends - Joe Cocker is a mainstay of any decent bar jukebox, and therefore, I have to hear this song at least 5 time a night
- Me and Bobby McGee - Never a terribly great song, IMHO, but the bar where I work has two levels, one inside and one outside - I walked from the outside, where Me and Bobby McGee was playing, and heard...Me and Bobby McGee playing downstairs. Killed it right there.
RECENT ADDITION: The Joker, by Steve Miller - again, never TERRIBLY a huge fan of this song (at least since high school), but this DRUNK ass Spaniard (nothing against Spaniards, but he was one...) played this song on all three jukeboxes last night like 5 times each. Even that cool as hell slide/wahwah solo sounded lame by the 8th play. Ugh.

And 99 Problems...totally. Bob Marley would have benefitted from some Rick Rubin production.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 14 July 2005 13:23 (twenty years ago)

I recently realized how unfortunate that "Jane Says" will never, ever mean as much to me as it did in 1995.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 14 July 2005 13:24 (twenty years ago)

i dont think so its like the mona lisa. but there are so many other ((bob marley) reggae) songs in this world, dont worry! even 'is this love' has so much more open space for appreciation/life in it, especially with the video

jeremy jordan (cruisy), Thursday, 14 July 2005 13:30 (twenty years ago)

yeah, "Is This Love" is way better.

Hell, I like "Tomorrow People" more than this song.

I feel you, amateurist. I went to a college with a high number of reggae-hip-hop-funk-jam bands per capita.

see what you need there 'Taste...' is take 2 of 'here, there and everywhere'. a knackered, straining mcartney putting his all into a solo unadorned version. it's all over the web.

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 14 July 2005 14:01 (twenty years ago)

i mean i don't know if i've *ever* been able to hear 'no woman, no cry'--well maybe there was a brief moment sometime when i was about 12 when i could 'hear' it, and then it slipped out of sight, forever wedded to the wind-downs of frat parties etc.

No Cry = CHEESE

In other news, I'm making mac and cheese as soon as I get home.

Is this the B-side to Free as a Bird (or was it Real Love?) that has the backing vocals kicking in for the final verse only?

Cunga (Cunga), Thursday, 14 July 2005 19:58 (twenty years ago)

Amateurist, I often have the experience of seeing a song I know like the back of my hand wedded to some image in a movie, or on TV, and the link strangifies it just enough for me to see it somewhat at a distance from my other associations -- even those of the movie, or TV show. I can't think of any examples, of course.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 14 July 2005 20:18 (twenty years ago)

I had really great mac and cheese on Wednesday with my bbq. I hate to be the francophile again, but French mac and cheese, baked to form a gratin on top and made with gruyere, I think, is one of the bestest.

M. White (Miguelito), Thursday, 14 July 2005 20:25 (twenty years ago)

I have not been able to take the song seriously since Roy Hudd did a version of it for The News Huddlines, retitled "No Kidney, No Pie."

Reminds me of how a college radio set of "A Love Supreme" covers has almost spoilt the original for me. Not so much the alternate renditions as the two deejays repeatedly chanting "A large poutine, a large poutine".

{which itself neatly segues back into the mac'n'cheese discussion}

Seems like we were just talking about this somewhere. I'd have to vote for Side One of Check Your Head.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Friday, 15 July 2005 00:44 (twenty years ago)

i'm not even familiar with that! i mean, i know what it is, but i don't know that i've ever heard it.

it's hard to a imagine a context that could revitalize the bob marley tune. it's status as a cliché seems to precede any actual meaning it exudes.
