hmm.

since the mayer mix they've gone a bit ... bleak, haven't they?

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 14 July 2005 06:52 (twenty years ago)

sure have, though there are the endless wacky mashup ones that nobody (here at least) ever buys, scratch perverts, freestylers etc etc etc.

Smagghe's one is bleak even for Smagghe. It is good though. That DIV one doesn't look very exciting.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 14 July 2005 08:12 (twenty years ago)

should clarify, I think Smagghe's is really good, despite taking a while to get into it.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 14 July 2005 08:12 (twenty years ago)

Thought that it might be more eclectic than that looks. I'm kinda surprised that DIV are playing minimal (wighnomy, johnson, smoke etc), thought they might be doing something different.

Bring on diplo's mix :D

Bn1, Thursday, 14 July 2005 08:35 (twenty years ago)

That's a pretty solid tracklisting- but yeah, it is surprising for DIV. I would have expected some HOT RAWK ACTION, or at the very least some riffage. Hopefully this'll be good, and at least it's not another OMG I Am Zany Turntable Mans type mix as Ronan mentions upthread. Those get stale very, very fast.

I'm curious about Villalobos and Tiefschwarz' upcoming mixes mixes...the latter especially since I found the mix disc of their Misch Masch kind of underwhelming.

Telephonething (Telephonething), Thursday, 14 July 2005 11:51 (twenty years ago)

the DIV essential mix was the same kind of thing.

they keep releasing, Dj set mixes, when I'd really prefer a mix tape sort of thing.

its not like theres a shortage of electroish mixes around at the moment.

its a bit one sided.... somewhere in a parallel universe, theres a DIV mix that mixes electro with krautrock, with noise-annoys, with house with punk.

im not holding my breath for it though.

That sounds like Modeselektor's Boomkat mixtape!

fandango (fandango), Thursday, 14 July 2005 13:29 (twenty years ago)

DIV have been going for ten years.

N_RQ, Thursday, 14 July 2005 13:38 (twenty years ago)

That sounds like Modeselektor's Boomkat mixtape!

Really? Hm, I might have to check that out then...from what I'd heard of their own productions I would have expected lots of willfully difficult IDM and such. The biggest problem I have with Boomkat's mixes (other than the outrageous exchange rate, but I really only buy sale stuff from them anyway) is the inability to look at a tracklisting beforehand and get the gist of it before buying.

Telephonething (Telephonething), Thursday, 14 July 2005 13:39 (twenty years ago)

Someone clarify... when vahid is saying "bleak" is he talking about mood or just the quality of the mix? I'd say the former is pretty accurate and the latter is a little bit of an overstatement. There hasn't been anything as consistent or classic as the Mayer mix, though.

mike h. (mike h.), Thursday, 14 July 2005 13:42 (twenty years ago)

The JLC one is still the only one I've bought.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Thursday, 14 July 2005 13:48 (twenty years ago)

i'm talking about mood. i've never been but people always say fabric is like the biggest, hypest, most going-off club in england - but weirdly, between weatherall, digweed, smagghe, adam beyer, adam freeland, and death in vegas most of their recent output seems tailor-made for lying in bed on a cloudy day with the covers pulled over your head.

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 14 July 2005 16:19 (twenty years ago)

Well, there's certainly a dollop of crunchy DSP noise in spots, but in the main it's a party tape (overdriven dancehall, hip-hop, hip-house, acid house, and a bit of the Buzzcocks) with the emphasis on 'fun' and not in the showing-off Kid606-esque way. It's sort of sloppily mixed. Which you may/may not appreciate. You can stream it from the livestreams section of Bpitch's website (last time I looked) if you have a decent connection (I don't). It does say "do not buy" on the CD-R after all!

fandango (fandango), Thursday, 14 July 2005 16:31 (twenty years ago)

cheers for the tip.

but how can aband with such diverse influences as DIV make such samey mix Cd's.

if it was a Fearless mix then fair enough but its a DIV one.

the JLC / JP / MM and Freeland are the only really stand out fabric mixes.

weatheralls good but thats a whole different ILM thread.

danny boy, Thursday, 14 July 2005 16:47 (twenty years ago)

It's a couple of years old now but I still rate Radioactive man's mix.

Don't know if beyers one is really as moody as the others you name Vahid, it's pretty funky (in a clanky minimal way) I think.

?

ewmy, Friday, 15 July 2005 11:43 (twenty years ago)

its an after hours mix.

any cunt can do that.

I want a dancfloor mix.

I just have this mix in my head thats their capable of..and nothings come close.

why does it have to be. an afterhours mix OR a straight electro mix.

Danny boy, Friday, 15 July 2005 15:14 (twenty years ago)

Why wait for Death in Vegas when Optimo have already got this shit on lock?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 15 July 2005 15:22 (twenty years ago)

Good Point.

Richard fearless was meant to play 2 hours on 6music yesterday, the web site has no mention of it, so maybe its coming up, that'll hopefully show the non electro side of DIV.

danny boy, Monday, 25 July 2005 08:51 (twenty years ago)

two weeks pass...
This is really growing on me.

ewmy, Thursday, 11 August 2005 11:51 (twenty years ago)

fuuuuuuuuuuck. this is really really good. kraftwerk + john carpenter + egyptian lover + carl craig.

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 08:38 (twenty years ago)

at least the 1st half - i haven't gotten to the 2nd yet.

also it's not as bleak as i thought it was going to be when i started the thread (i just got this!)

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 08:39 (twenty years ago)

Yeah I reckon it looks really good though i haven't heard it yet. Dinky! Two Alex Smoke tracks! etc.

This is one of the worst music reviews I have ever read. Knowing my luck, the writer is probably a regular here, but damn. I stand by my statement.

Telephonething (Telephonething), Saturday, 10 September 2005 02:37 (twenty years ago)

whoa... my name is not andrew maclachlan, but that's about what i was writing like when i was all cough syruped up earlier.
verdict: i must have written this.
though i don't remember.
incidentally i do actually have a cough.

firstworldman (firstworldman), Saturday, 10 September 2005 02:53 (twenty years ago)

The sentences look like they're written by someone who has a primary language other than English!

mike h. (mike h.), Saturday, 10 September 2005 15:52 (twenty years ago)

that is one of the most bizarre reviews i have ever read.

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Saturday, 10 September 2005 16:48 (twenty years ago)

ten-cents-a-word assignments tends to skew one's critical faculties

BIZARRE LIKE A FOX, Saturday, 10 September 2005 17:21 (twenty years ago)

"electronica legend alex smoke"???

does this guy think fabric is like a Back To Mine series or something. erm.....isn't Alex Smoke like, 21?

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 10 September 2005 18:45 (twenty years ago)

Ha ha. That review made me think though, in it's way.

Raw Patrick (Raw Patrick), Saturday, 10 September 2005 20:33 (twenty years ago)

404 not found

where did it go?

65421, Saturday, 10 September 2005 20:40 (twenty years ago)

Should be here:

http://popmatters.com/music/reviews/d/deathinvegas-fabriclive23.shtml

What really strikes me is that the writer seems to have absolutely no idea what a DJ mix is or how one is constructed...

Telephonething (Telephonething), Saturday, 10 September 2005 20:42 (twenty years ago)

I'm really digging this. It starts out head-nodding, drops back for a while, and now three-quarters through it's REALLY slamming.

Lukas (lukas), Saturday, 10 September 2005 20:50 (twenty years ago)

man, the comparisons to "now that's what I call music..." are just bizarre...the weird thing is that the writer doesn't just get it wrong in terms of the point of a mix disc, but also in terms of stating at the end that this mix shares DIV's influences...bizarro review, and really bad, even for popmatters.

anyway, i think i'll quite like this mix, but i agree that there have been a lot of electro minimal mixes, interspersed with bog-standard techy house (pullen, heather, digweed, eddie richards) since the glory days of the Swayzak - Mayer mixes.

paulhw (paulhw), Saturday, 10 September 2005 21:21 (twenty years ago)

dj heather, eddie richards, jon digweed are all better than the michael mayer mix.

vahid (vahid), Sunday, 11 September 2005 00:47 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...
This is really good and dark. Do they play out like this?
