Charlotte Church: What is she doing?

Is she going for a different style or something? Everyone seems to have her album and I don't know if I'm missing anything.

What kind of sound is she going for on "Tissues & Issues"?

Michael Costello (MichaelCostello1), Thursday, 14 July 2005 18:01 (twenty years ago)

One part Girls Aloud to three parts Bond.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 14 July 2005 18:04 (twenty years ago)

I've not been as disappointed in an album for ages. There's three good songs: "Crazy Chick", "Moodswings", and the one where she gives it some "la la la" opera steezy. The rest of it is imminently forgettable.

She needs to sell her soul to Xenomania ASAP.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 14 July 2005 18:06 (twenty years ago)

What is really great about the album is that they seem to have printed the wrong title on the spine (this was the case with all copies in local HMV, anyway)

I too am upset by how unfun it is, on first play it was all dayglo fizz like olde-Moloko or Ze or something, and then someone said "Anastacia!" and the spell was broken.

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Thursday, 14 July 2005 18:16 (twenty years ago)

I like it, but I'm a total square.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Thursday, 14 July 2005 18:40 (twenty years ago)

I thought it'd be a lot gayer than it is. And "Left Outside Alone" > anything on this album.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 14 July 2005 18:41 (twenty years ago)

Check out the photo spread in this month's GQ. I think you'll find that she's lookin' to grow up disgracefully.

tolstoy (tolstoy), Thursday, 14 July 2005 18:45 (twenty years ago)

On further investigation, the three opening tracks are genuinely glorious and number 6 is some kind of industrial-pianobash romp, so, I dunno. Four ace tracks and a nice sleeve is usually enough to prompt total reappraisal. But the second half draaags so.

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Thursday, 14 July 2005 19:30 (twenty years ago)

I've decided that there is, in fact, only one good song on the album, and that is "Confessional Song" and its "ooh-ooh-ooohs." The rest are decidedly middling.

brittle-lemon, Saturday, 16 July 2005 13:52 (twenty years ago)

I was kind of hoping it wd be good after reading the horrible review it got in teh grunaidn

Pashmina (Pashmina), Saturday, 16 July 2005 14:08 (twenty years ago)

I was thinking - tissues = lad mag wank fantasy, and issues = sex.

BUt it's all sobbing and self-help. Half the songs look as if the lyrics were written by Geri Halliwell.

edward o (edwardo), Saturday, 16 July 2005 14:10 (twenty years ago)

two weeks pass...
Or a younger, feminised Richey Manic?

The record's kind of growing on me beyond the undoubted genius of tracks 1-3. The ballads aren't that nauseous, and in some cases are rather touching (cf. "Confessional Song" with the rather sorry day-in-the-life attempt that the Appletons did a couple of years ago). "Let's Be Alone" is quite fantastique in a Xenomania-do-1983-Cabaret Voltaire kind of way, and even the obligatory echt-flamenco of "Casualty Of Love" works quite well.

And indeed, the spine of my copy also says "Crazy Chick" as opposed to "Tissues And Issues."

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 11:42 (twenty years ago)

why do people bother with this? sleazy teenage opera promise turned even sleazier pop wannabe. is it comparable to people bothering with sleazy fish and chips everyday and enjoy it?

rizzx (Rizz), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 11:57 (twenty years ago)

She isn't sleazy!

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 11:58 (twenty years ago)

Plus, it was potentially the second best idea ever!

(best idea ever; Charlotte covering "Of Walking Abortion" for a B-side)

edward o (edwardo), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 12:00 (twenty years ago)

She isn't sleazy!

Of course she is! She's a GURL!

The Ghost of Dada, meet nu-nu-ILM (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 12:01 (twenty years ago)

Joris, do you like fun? Don't you like her tight sweater? ;-)

nathalie sans denouement (stevie nixed), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 12:01 (twenty years ago)

i like fun yes, can't see the fun in her. she sleazy, ciara's fun, everywhere fun, imagine you and ciara. now imagine you and charlotte, hmm? right?

rizzx (Rizz), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 12:19 (twenty years ago)

Charlotte Church is lovely.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 12:19 (twenty years ago)

hmmm...ciara vs. charlotte? in dissensus parlez i'd say that particular contest was what is known as a "fucking no-brainer." but then i have to be careful 'cos getting tight over charlotte at my age is distinctly dodgy... ;-)

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 12:21 (twenty years ago)

for real? ever seen ciara dance? i've seen charlotte 'dance'...

ugh

rizzx (Rizz), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 12:22 (twenty years ago)

i've seen the crazy chick video. i had to have seven cold showers afterwards and think of boring things, like thornton heath, or the novels of iris murdoch, or d*ss*ns*s...

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 12:23 (twenty years ago)

Well, Charlotte Church has three good songs (four if you count "The Opera Song"), and Ciara has, ummm, half.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 12:24 (twenty years ago)

She's Welsh, which tends to be a good thing when it comes to women - in my experience

Danperryismus (Dada), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 12:28 (twenty years ago)

To be fair, it's four good songs. "Call My Name", "Moodswings", "Let's Be Alone" are great, though, actually, as I've said elsewhere, the latter is actually a Kelly Osbourne single in disguise.

edward o (edwardo), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 12:33 (twenty years ago)

dios!

have u not heard 'oh'? have u not heard '1-2 step' and 'goodies'

i've seen charlotte on jonathan ross performing her first single

again: ugh

she shakes her hips (or tries to)

again: ugh

rizzx (Rizz), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 12:33 (twenty years ago)

but..in all fairness she's probably easier than ciara

so i understand your (cheap) choice ;))

rizzx (Rizz), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 12:34 (twenty years ago)

Dancing is overrated

Danperryismus (Dada), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 12:34 (twenty years ago)

I have indeed heard "Goodies." It is not as good as the Goodies.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 12:34 (twenty years ago)

I cant believe theres any love for the faux operatic trance song..

crazy chick however is all about the handclaps.

popjustice £20 prize winner?

danny boy, Tuesday, 2 August 2005 12:35 (twenty years ago)

The handclaps are, as someone used to say, the punctum of the song.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 12:35 (twenty years ago)

i like 'crazy chick' and 'goodies' muchly, but i think there's more charlotte in 'crazy chick' than ciara in 'goodies'.

N_RQ, Tuesday, 2 August 2005 12:36 (twenty years ago)

Is it just me that thinks that "Moodswings" was probably written for Amy Studt before she was dropped?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 12:41 (twenty years ago)

one year passes...
The guestbook on Charlotte's website is comedy gold. I particularly like the latest entry:

Dear Charlotte

I have written a song for your next hit. It is called HIGH SCORE

I need a man like you
Who can do
The things that you
And only you can do
Ooh

High score! High score!
You take me to the next level!
High score! High score!
In your love I will revel!
High score! High score!
You beat my end of level boss!
High score! High score!
You wrap me up in candy floss!

I need a man so sweet
You got me beat
You didn't even have to cheat

[Everything stops here, and you just sort of whisper]

(You just read my manual)

[Synth drums]

Ooh ooh yeah

[More synth drums]

Ooh ooh yeah

[Children singing]

You are the best
You passed her test

[You again, Charlotte]

High score! High score!
You take me to the next level!
High score! High score!
In your love I will revel!
High score! High score!
You beat my end of level boss!
High score! High score!
You wrap me up in candy floss!

THE END (OF THE SONG)]

I hope you like it, but you'll need to get in touch with me about the tune and other questions.

Funny: The end bit of her TV prog has her singing with a band.

The Feeling did that "Never be lonely" and looked like they were trying to pretend she wasn't there.

The Orson one went OK

I havent seen any of the others.

My head is spinning from trying to unravel the contradictions in the first verse.

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 13:42 (nineteen years ago)

It's subtle gender distortion; what she's saying is: "I want a man-like you"!

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 13:46 (nineteen years ago)

Sunday 11th april 2004.
Dear Charlotte.
I am absolutely so sorry for staring at you yesterday here in brighton when I was walking along the seafront & it proves that I urgently need to see an eye specialist at the eye hospital in this city to correct my eyes to stop me staring. Happy easter also happy belated 18th birthday. Yours faithfully Lee Luckham.

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 13:48 (nineteen years ago)

Is this Charlotte's Stan?

Seriously, the authorities need to be alerted.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 13:51 (nineteen years ago)

Seemed as if Church was trying to show up N'Dea Davenport by over-singing her parts of the duet on last week's show.

I'm watching her w/ Brand new heavies, doing "Seven nation army" right now.

By the end of the series, I expect she'll be doing "High Score" with Paul Danan.

five years pass...

Very little talk about the purported new direction she's taking. Apparently she's been tweeting about Disco Inferno vinyl and stuff. Not sure what I make of this, it's halfway between her old pop stuff and Hail To The Thief I guess...

Know how Roo feel (LocalGarda), Friday, 7 September 2012 09:39 (thirteen years ago)

Oh, I reviewed one of her recent shows and had a chat with her afterwards in the smoking yard. It's a Florence-type thing, basically - which goes for the singing style in particular. Many of her vocal lines sat quite oddly against the arrangements, not quite gelling. Self-penned lyrics, co-written with her band, several songs about Leveson / press intrusion / Daily Mail / Paul Dacre / online trolls etc - but for all that, not very memorable. Surprisingly diffident performance style; she's clearly still finding her way, so building experience in small venues during the summer recess was a good way to go. Lots of slight;y self-conscious hair-touching. Diction not nearly as clear as you would expect, lines half-swallowed, quite a "singing to myself" vibe. On stage, she's also in charge of the knob twiddling, laptop priming and live looping, which was clearly a bit of a challenge - she started the introductory track crouching on the floor, which had me thinking we were in for full-on theatrical histrionics, but it was actually just so that she could see which pedals to press. All the tracks in the current set (except the intro track) are planned to appear on a series of EPs, with a video to accompany each track. No old material performed. Saw her at a 250-capacity venue which was maybe 2/3rds full, mainly curious regulars and a lot of industry (the guest list was massive, probably half the crowd at least). Strongly doubt that she will ever be able to transistion this stuff to larger venues, but not sure that she's that bothered either way. Tempting to say "vanity project", but there wasn't any vanity on display at all - she meant it, man - so the well-meaning dilettantism was quite attractive, even though the music was no great shakes.

mike t-diva, Friday, 7 September 2012 10:53 (thirteen years ago)

she was upstairs in a pub near me with a sneering preview in the oxford music rag, they made it sound like it was Label Mandated Indie Rock Turn or something (and chose of all the possible preview photos the most cleavage-y thing)

I remember Jonatnan King using a similar photo (don't look for it it's pretty gross)..

Yeah, funny how this couldn't possibly be Charlotte Church's idea it has to be a big bad record label executive etc.

Mark G, Friday, 7 September 2012 11:31 (thirteen years ago)

Gotta love that Northcliffe regional newspaper website rude word auto-censor facility! Having already censored "skank" (legitimate musical term!) and "pussy" (legitimate Azealia Banks blouse-blow fashion term!) in previous reviews of mine (and having rendered "monobrow" as "mo***row" in a colleague's review of Miles Kane), it then saw fit to render "Paul Dacre" as a string of asterisks in my Charlotte Church review.

Would pay good money to get my hands on their Reserved Words list: skank, pussy, nob, Paul Dacre... they don't run a paper in Scunthorpe, I take it?

CHARLOTTE CHURCH ANNOUNCES FIRST U.S. RELEASE IN OVER A DECADE

U.S. TOUR SCHEDULED FOR SPRING 2013

On March 12, 2013, Welsh singer-songwriter Charlotte Church will unleash her first U.S. release in over a decade on her own label, Alligator Wine. A dark and searing evolution that confounds all expectations of the 27-year-old international star, ‘ONE & TWO’ marks a transformation of Church’s renowned classical training. Influenced by her love of artists like Radiohead, LCD Soundsystem, and Sufjan Stevens and marked with daring experimentation, this record reflects a growth Church recently described to Q Magazine: “I have a whole vocal range I have now liberated.”

‘ONE’ was previously released in the U.K. as an EP that drew overwhelming acclaim from the British music press. The first in a series of five EPs to be released throughout 2013, ‘ONE & TWO’ is Church doing “gothic rock” that “suits her remarkable (voice)” (The Independent). Written and produced by Church (with bandmates Jonathan Powell and Jamie Neasom), ‘ONE & TWO’ calls to mind Vespertine-era Bjork on tracks like standout “Glitterbombed” with its synths, tribal drums, and delicate vocals exploding into a feral, dark-disco chorus.

Church also drew inspiration from Nabokov’s Pale Fire and “the idea of living in a temporal plane where…you have to make peace with all the people you have ever known” for the ethereal lullaby “How Not to be Surprised When You’re A Ghost”—another album highlight. “Making peace with yourself and others is a huge theme,” Church said of the album.

By the age of 21, Charlotte Church had sold more than 10 million records worldwide, sang for Nelson Mandela, the Queen, the Pope, and two U.S. Presidents, as well as tens of thousands of people at sold out shows internationally.
