apparently its leaked. have you heard it? what are your thoughts?

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Thursday, 14 July 2005 23:21 (twenty years ago)

i can hear the oneida influence on this thing. which is a-OK with me.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Thursday, 14 July 2005 23:38 (twenty years ago)

hrm, nothing is coming up on soulseek.

Jamey Lewis (Jameys Burning), Friday, 15 July 2005 01:20 (twenty years ago)

The older albums never made any real impression on me, but this is... WOW!

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 15 July 2005 02:37 (twenty years ago)

so far so good. seems kinda subdued in comparison to their other records. i'm definitely digging Sure Enough.

Quinn (quinn), Friday, 15 July 2005 06:05 (twenty years ago)

it sounds pretty much in line with the live versions ive heard of these songs. steve's voice reminds me of mac macaughan, for some odd reason.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Friday, 15 July 2005 12:30 (twenty years ago)

johnny, thats odd you say that because i think the cons follow a formula on each album -- upbeat anthemic stuff, lower key songs, really subdued acoustic work. of course, they manage to get it right, so its a formula that works.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Friday, 15 July 2005 12:32 (twenty years ago)

Oh, I don't know that it sounds all that different from older stuff really. Just that I'm in a more receptive state of mind right now. I'll have to go back and hear the first two with fresh ears.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 15 July 2005 13:27 (twenty years ago)

What an awesome band. I'm glad to see some like/love for them on ILM.

I haven't heard Tournament yet, but I'm confident it's a gooder.

Brooker Buckingham (Brooker B), Friday, 15 July 2005 13:36 (twenty years ago)

i enjoy the loud songs! at points they get too "hokey"

cutty (mcutt), Friday, 15 July 2005 13:46 (twenty years ago)

I just like that, for the most part, they write good songs. I like that Fugazi/Bruce Springsteen amalgam thing they have going on.

They just do their own thing and plow on. It's nice to see.

Brooker Buckingham (Brooker B), Friday, 15 July 2005 13:53 (twenty years ago)

I too think it's much more subdued than the other records, and I think it's better for it -- to me there's more subtlety and variety than before...I love the actual songs in a way that I don't feel for the other records as much.

Hurlothrumbo (hurlothrumbo), Friday, 15 July 2005 14:46 (twenty years ago)

the constantines are my favorite current band [that is not spoon]. i seriously adore these guys. have from the moment i wandered into the khyber nearly 5 years ago.

i definitely agree its more subdued -- there's not as many "ROCK" songs. in fact, im really surprised at how much "hotline operator" has changed over the last three years. even before it was a b-side on the "nighttime" single, it was much much more aggressive in live performance.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Friday, 15 July 2005 15:00 (twenty years ago)

Maybe that's why I like it. I'm totally subdued in real life.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 15 July 2005 17:06 (twenty years ago)

They're probably one of my favourite live bands today. Just fuckin' fierce, and really nice guys in addition. I'm glad to hear that this album does not disappoint.

Can anyone upload a YSI/Rapidshare/other link?

alex in montreal (alex in montreal), Friday, 15 July 2005 21:32 (twenty years ago)

yes, YSI, please. And explain this Oneida influence you're hearing, I love both of those bands.

Jamey Lewis (Jameys Burning), Saturday, 16 July 2005 15:44 (twenty years ago)

Wow, this is good. First-impression highlights are "Lizaveta" and "Draw Us Lines". This fits perfectly with my current semi-catatonic state.

alex in montreal (alex in montreal), Thursday, 21 July 2005 15:22 (twenty years ago)

two things i know about this record: fat bobby helped man the board, and the guys were listening to "the wedding" nonstop.

the record gets better and better with each listen.

saturday night's show at the empty bottle will stand out as one of the best live gigs ive ever seen.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Thursday, 21 July 2005 16:08 (twenty years ago)

Before listening, a moment of silence for Three Gut might be in order.

Rufus 3000 (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 21 July 2005 16:17 (twenty years ago)

OTM.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Thursday, 21 July 2005 16:20 (twenty years ago)

YSI?

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Thursday, 21 July 2005 16:24 (twenty years ago)

sorry hari, i cant bring myself to sharing the files. i love these boys too much.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Thursday, 21 July 2005 16:24 (twenty years ago)

When's this due out? I really need the new Picastro and Saint Etienne cds too.

Are the band big curling fans as well? They could become like the Tiger Woods of curling.

Rufus 3000 (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 21 July 2005 16:30 (twenty years ago)

maria, i actually thought about you when i saw them in park slope two weeks ago!

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 21 July 2005 16:31 (twenty years ago)

i was going to go to that park slope show. im sad i didnt, there was some mixup with horatio sanz afterwards! [details are fuzzy but sanz was def. involved.]

TOH is due out in mid- to late-october. sub pop always sends their promos out ridiculously early.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Thursday, 21 July 2005 16:37 (twenty years ago)

On first listen, I think this might be my favorite Constantines yet.

Brooker Buckingham (Brooker B), Thursday, 21 July 2005 16:58 (twenty years ago)

Ah this is great so far. First thing i downloaded now i have high speed net. I am feeling guilty though. I will definitely buy it still.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Thursday, 21 July 2005 23:15 (twenty years ago)

i hear you -- its so good you cant help but feeling like the guilty dog you are for downloading it. im buying five copies of actual release, in both sub pop & three gut versions.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Friday, 22 July 2005 01:29 (twenty years ago)

BTW: Just so you know this is the last Three Gut Records release.

Rufus 3000 (Mr Noodles), Friday, 22 July 2005 03:05 (twenty years ago)

yes, I KNOW. im totally bummed lisa's not doing the label anymore but hey, i understand. it was great while it lasted.

I guess I am late to this game but I have to echo everyone else, great cd.

Jim Reckling (Jim Reckling), Friday, 30 September 2005 23:36 (twenty years ago)

i enjoy this record more and more with each listen.

I didn't feel like making a new thread, but their new album Kensington Heights is kicking around and is predictably awesome. Arguably even more trad-rock than usual, but they're still at the top of their game.

Simon H., Friday, 8 February 2008 16:06 (eighteen years ago)

I still play "Soon Enough" a lot. Great song. When is the new album out? I listened to the 2 new songs on their MySpace page and I think I like the non-album song best. But I would love to hear a new album.

Savannah Smiles, Friday, 8 February 2008 17:40 (eighteen years ago)

Not out till April - this is the earliest leak in recent memory. Arts and Crafts hasn't even formally announced the album yet.

"Soon Enough" is definitely in my top 5 Constantines songs.

Simon H., Friday, 8 February 2008 17:48 (eighteen years ago)

The Cons are like the solidest band around. I failed to hit "Tournament of Hearts" until months after it was released, and by then had missed their tour. I will not make the same mistake again.

new album is fantastic

"time can be overcome" is slow-burn jam of the year, even better than "soon enough"

"trans canada" is huge

great band

ciderpress, Saturday, 15 March 2008 02:14 (seventeen years ago)

I don't know, I think this new one is kinda boring. The songs aren't bad, they just sound a little lazy. I do like "Time Can Be Overcome" though.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Saturday, 15 March 2008 02:18 (seventeen years ago)

Saw the live show yesterday, predictably killer:

Constantines @ Emo's, outside stage: One of the day's best. New songs are stunning, all built up tension and release -- as good as late-era Fugazi art-punk, with shades of late-era Talk Talk ambience (not kidding) in a couple songs. Old tunes were predictably awesome. Highlight was "Soon Enough," gorgeous song. Grade: A

stephen, Saturday, 15 March 2008 03:21 (seventeen years ago)

I really like "Trans Canada." I still don't hear anything that sounds even faintly like Fugazi in any one of their songs, though, and that still gets mentioned in reviews.

Has anyone heard that "Islands in the Stream" duet with Feist 7" they just put out?

Savannah Smiles, Wednesday, 23 April 2008 14:48 (seventeen years ago)

the gtrs and drums have always reminded me of fugazi

cutty, Wednesday, 23 April 2008 16:44 (seventeen years ago)

Reminds me a ton of "Gentlemen"-era Whigs. Really enjoying this ("Trans Canada" obvs. the early highlight).

Kensington Heights

this sounds great . Seriously.

Vastly underrated band.

Keep that flame burning fellas.

Another good-to-very good record by Cons. I don't get it though--both of their last two albums have stretches of tunes that absolutely slay and other stretches of tunes that are good but sort of a step down. First five on the new one are fantastic (capping off with Webb hitting that high note in "Our Age"--awesome), and from there it sort of settles in and there aren't really any more highlights. I still think they have a truly great one in 'em, and i REALLY want to see them play again.

call all destroyer, Monday, 12 May 2008 18:35 (seventeen years ago)

Maybe I've got the wrong album destroyer but I prefer the second half. 'Brother Run Them Down' slays me and that's well into the album
