Best and least expected gem by a much-loved band in the last couple years. Chinaboise are essentially MX-80--almost all the key members--but with a campfire/beatnik/comedy troupe/boys&girls singing flair instead of geek-metal skronk. Just a whole lot of fun. Out via Gulcher earlier this year (or maybe it was late last year).

I also picked that up recently. It's brilliant. The liner notes say that the record was a complete fluke and a one-off, and I think that really comes across. It just sounds like they had a real laugh making it! Plus, some really great songs. 'Dear Tears' and 'Working Girl' are faves. The skit bits actually work, too.

The only thing more improbable than my missing this thread originally is that I haven't even bought the damn thing yet! But I expect I will before too long, directly from the source, Bob Richert at Gulcher (helluva nice guy!)

This is insanely good.
I bought it a couple of days ago and can't stop listening to it.

is there any documentation of Screaming Gypsy Bandits? This was Bruce Anderson's late 60s band pre MX80, they used to play in Cincinnati.

wait...Myonga Von Bontee?

about SGB: I searched a little, but I didn't find anything. I would be curious to listen, though.

Hahaha, just shine that MX-80 radar-scope logo in the air and I appear like Batman! From what I recall, SGB weren't really Anderson's band, altho he did play with them for a time and appeared on their (lone?) album (which I've never heard.) I believe the Bandits were primarily led by Mark Bingham.

Actually, now that I think of it: There's a Screaming Gypsy Bandits track (alongside Chinaboise and MX-80 tracks) on the old Bloomington One sampler (1975, Bar-B-Q Records), which I own but have never played (haven't had a functioning turntable for several years now.)

Hey, a nice clean recording of that Screaming Gypsy Bandits LP (In The Eye, 1973) finally turned up on slsk a few months ago, woohoo! Verdict: enjoyable enough but nothing special. A couple of posthippie uptempo West Coast-style jazz-blues things, a spacey droning guitar-sitar-tabla thing, etc. Really, I haven't listened often enough to properly evaluate it. (Still nice to finally hear it, tho, naturally.)
