mullygrubbr (bulbs), Friday, 15 July 2005 04:34 (twenty years ago)

Ditto.

The video for "Burn Rubber" was on VH1 Classic today!

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Friday, 15 July 2005 05:12 (twenty years ago)

I nominated this for the ILM 70s track poll. I stand by its greatness, therefore...no denying here either.

peepee (peepee), Friday, 15 July 2005 05:48 (twenty years ago)

They're rude, they're so awesome.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Friday, 15 July 2005 05:54 (twenty years ago)

Geez, I'm getting all confused between the Gap Band and the Bar-Kays. Sheesh. Sorry. I'm drinking too much red wine, which I think all those guys would at least appreciate. (They should come over here right now; we can buy more until 2 a.m.!) They were both on Mercury, at least, right? Don't even get me started on "Ffun" by Con Funk Shun.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Friday, 15 July 2005 05:56 (twenty years ago)

What is the Bar-Kays video where it's just a camera zooming in and out on each of the members as they nod their head wearing shades alternating the direction they look after every paid of nods?

This would be an early to mid 80s Bar Kays video, of course.

donuty! donuti! donuté! (donut), Friday, 15 July 2005 06:39 (twenty years ago)

Classic.

It really hasn't been sampled by anyone to great effect yet though.

I wanna hear someone like Just Blaze use it.

Ellis, Friday, 15 July 2005 07:42 (twenty years ago)

I had some Marks and Spencer Abstinthe and Damson Jam with my toast this morning.

No one could deny the power of that jam. I told everyone else to give it 15 minutes.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 15 July 2005 07:44 (twenty years ago)

recently very heavily sampled (for the umpteenth time) by lil mo on 'dem boys'.

stirmonster (stirmonster), Friday, 15 July 2005 08:32 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, but pretty much every track that samples it is by someone shitty or they haven't lopped the best part(s).

Ellis, Friday, 15 July 2005 11:22 (twenty years ago)

the drum break right before the end...C!!!

Ha, and for the record, also sampled by Har Mar Superstar.

Pump Up the Volume!

and Beat Dis?

I mean rap songs.

Ellis, Friday, 15 July 2005 16:34 (twenty years ago)

Oooh!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 15 July 2005 19:07 (twenty years ago)

There was a period there, around the time of the WATTSTAX movie, where the Bar-Kays were in a Funkadelic/"black rock"-kinda mode. To the person who asked about which Bar-Kays to get...if you don't mind a little heavy metal funk try BLACK ROCK (1971), DO YOU SEE WHAT I SEE? (1972), and COLD BLOODED (1973).

i keep wishing that "Holy Ghost" would become the new template for gospel music.

alas, it must instead remain hellfire-hot.

beta blog, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 22:11 (seventeen years ago)

this vs. "too hot to stop"
