BSS Arrest!

Last night opening for Dino Jr. in NYC....

"Maybe you missed Kevin Drew going on (and on) about the arrests, then: Two members of BSS were busted in Washington Square Park trying to buy pot, and at least one was charged with assaulting a police officer. They were still in jail when the band went on, and -- though all the main folk seemed to be there (there were 11 on stage... Who got busted, the triangle player?) -- they came out pretty shoddily. The sound mix was lousy (Amy's mic was pretty much off for the first two songs), and they all seemed out of sorts.
It was my 5th or 6th BSS show, and easily the worst I've seen... though they really pulled it together on "anthems for a 17year-old girl."

Drew said something along the lines of "I don't know what's more pathetic: Two 42 year-old men trying to buy drugs in a park, or the way this country has suddenly made such a big deal about marijuana the past 15 yrs..."

Are all the members of this collective that old?

classy, Friday, 15 July 2005 13:17 (twenty years ago)

Two 42 year-old men trying to buy drugs in a park is more pathetic. I mean, c'mon.

I wish they had arrested some of them before the Philly gig! Their performance was equally criminal here.

As of last night, the "Broken Social Scene" is officially my least favorite band in the world. As if it was the city's fault their two-bit hangers-on players are dumbshits.

sexyDancer: "delivery service, motherfuckers!"

cutty (mcutt), Friday, 15 July 2005 19:24 (twenty years ago)

their set in philly was the worst ive seen of theirs as well. [this was a night before the NYC show.] the drummer lost his kick drum mid-song, the mix was HORRIBLE. amy had to go back to the soundman and have a talk with him and then it slightly improved. they could have played for 40 more minutes but were so embarrassed at that point that they just slunk off the stage. "anthems" was the only good song they did.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Friday, 15 July 2005 19:27 (twenty years ago)

You can't blame the sound man they're content to do half-assed glosses on "Daydream Nation" with only the most superficial of lyrics dumped on top.

Tigerstyle Shamanic Vision Quester (sexyDancer), Friday, 15 July 2005 19:42 (twenty years ago)

Well, I guess that's what happens when you have like 18 people in your band. I bet sound engineers at clubs hate the new trend of large ensembles.

darin (darin), Friday, 15 July 2005 19:45 (twenty years ago)

in their defense, the band didnt get a soundcheck at their philly show. however, i really doubt that.

This band blows.

Reggie, Friday, 15 July 2005 19:51 (twenty years ago)

BBS is a fantastic band. Just because they had a few off nights - which by the sounds of it were caused by crappy sound techs and overly conservative drug laws - doesn't mean they're horrible, it means you have bad taste in music.

moe hun, Friday, 15 July 2005 22:10 (twenty years ago)

actually, it means you have bad taste in music. we could go on like this for hours. have you posted here before?

Magik Markers Live Footage: Boston 2004

Bringing it to you straight from Manhattan Central Booking, Riff Raff's got some good news and bad news. The good news is that I got arrested last night, and the free wireless here at Central Booking is nothing short of fantastic. A lot of prisons I've been to I'll get like, 40 maybe 50K/sec, and even then I'll have to pay an hourly fee or buy a token cup of coffee in the jailhouse caf so they think I'm a real customer (bullshit). But Central Booking, I come in here, 500K/sec, this tech support guy's sitting literally right next to me (he was arrested last night for jacking a car), and everybody here's been really good about letting me finish my Bit Torrent download of the new Charlie Choco Factory flick. Rumor is, if you synch this film to R. Kelly's Chocolate Factory album, nothing happens.

The bad news is that what started as a harmless prank--me selling weed to two sweet dudes from Canadian indie rockers Broken Social Scene--turned into just a regular prank--all three of us getting arrested for being total retards. Apparently buying drugs in Washington Square Park--and now selling them?-- is a huge cliche. Come on, I haven't rollerbladed in weeks. Weeks! Days. Today.

So I have no idea what happened last night at the show. I imagine it was total mindblowing chaos just like every other indie rock concert, and as is par for the charliehorse here in NYC, everybody I mean everybody was dancing. I'm no slouch though. Before the big bust, I caught noise rockers Magik Markers play their set, seemingly mocking the Summerstage crowd, the Summerstage line-up, and their own incongruous appearance in the process. Multiple times, but always after banging her guitar on the stagefloor or putting the guitar cable bare into her mouth or performing some glorious combination of the two, the lead singer would swing herself off the lip, prompting a team of security officers to push her back and keep her from swinging equipment at photographers. This may have been the most live set I've ever seen. "This is a hardcore show!" she screamed; then someone said, "This is like the sound of J. Mascis taking a shit." Radio 4 were not available to comment.

Really it wasn't two members of the band it was producer David Newfeld (though he plays all over the new record) and like a tech guy, i forget what his name is and his real position. So no, it's not like you really know who these people are and this explains why they're so old (though i think some of the older members like canning and whiteman are like mid 30s)

tungsten, Saturday, 16 July 2005 01:14 (twenty years ago)

I've Seen them Twice in the last two weeks and both times were great. The second time there were a lot of notable set up problems. But this was at the most poorly organized concert I've probably ever seen, as it was the city putting it on. Thus my Love for Broken Social Scene continues all the more.

They were at Pitchfork's big festival this week. They said they were going to sue the NYC cops. The producer/nth guitarist was there and he did actually look like he had been beaten up pretty bad - two black eyes, I think? They described it as police brutality in the face of a nonviolent crime and suggested their guy wasn't even there for pot but just along with someone else who had driven him down to the city.

Anyway they were decent but not great (Stars actually put on a better show when they came through a few weeks ago).

raj, Monday, 18 July 2005 05:11 (twenty years ago)

He actually didn't try to fight back. They were beating the crap out of him, he got scared, and tried to run. That didn't work, so they beat him up some more, cracking a couple of ribs in the process.

Like others are saying, he was a dumbass for being in town to play at a rock festival, and somehow didn't think to ask any of the 483983 other bands at said festival if they could fix him up. Getting your face pounded in and your ribs cracked for trying to buy weed is excessive no matter how you look at it.

When Wolf Eyes played here a couple of months ago, they talked about getting trying to go out for some food with Double Leopards and not getting seated because the Quebec pricks in Victoriaville didn't like the way they looked. They complained and said that all Quebecers were asshats. And you know what, they were probably right. The story is funny because it's so true.

The bruised appearance of the suspect in Allen's killing, Esteban Carpio, drew cries of outrage from family and national attention. From left, he is shown in chronological order during four court appearances between April 18 and June 20, 2005, wearing a "spit shield" in the first two and by videoconference for the second two.

Suspect Esteban Carpio appears in District Court, Providence, from the ACI by videoconference for a status hearing today.(june 20) It was the first time he was seen in court without any facial covering since the April 17 slaying.

OLD SPICE® CHEMTRAILS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (ex machina), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 20:34 (twenty years ago)

PROVIDENCE – A Superior Court judge agreed today to a Department of Corrections request to allow the insertion of a tube, if necessary, to feed the suspect in the murder of a Providence police detective.

Neither the suspect, Esteban Carpio, or his lawyer, objected to the step, prompted by Carpio’s recent reluctance to eat while being held at the state prison.

Journal photo / Mary Murphy

Esteban Carpio, the suspect in the murder of a Providence police detective, sits in a wheelchair for a videoconference appearance in Superior Court today.

The 26-year-old Carpio, who was sitting in a wheelchair during his videoconference court appearance, also entered not guilty pleas to the charges against him. He wore no facial covering, as he had in previous appearances, but did have a thick beard.

Patricia A. Coyne-Fague, chief legal counsel for the Department of Corrections, told Superior Court Judge Susan McGuirl that Carpio has been "very inconsistent" about eating for about the past month and as a result, "has suffered certain medical consequences." She did not elaborate.

Coyne-Fague said the department wanted permission to insert the feeding tube to ensure that Carpio doesn't starve himself to death.

McGuirl asked Carpio about the situation.

"I'm not doing too good when I eat the food," Carpio replied, in a slow and soft voice.

McGuirl ruled that any feeding tube would be inserted at an outside medical facility, as the department requested.

intonation festival was not the first time ive been subjected to his screeds and im really suprised i didnt run across the stage to clock him one. honestly, i dont mind the political interludes during rock concerts but never, ever blame your paying audience for the troubles caused by its leaders. [maybe we are in some part to blame, but thats a completely different thread]

if that makes me less sympathetic to the whole weed incident, whatever. ive pretty much chalked up that guys dick moves to his inability to admit he makes mistakes. he's more happy finding someone else to blame for whatever problems exist. bad sound? blame the club, ignore the fact that a 10+ person band failed to show up for soundcheck. busted for buying weed? not his fault as well. im sure the reason the band functions as a collective is because if he screws up, the accountability rests on the whole group, not just him. fuck people like this.

every canadian i know is more knowledgable about our culture than most americans. they're well aware of how strict our drug laws are and would know trolling for drugs in an open-air area is probably a very bad idea.

i do feel bad about the cops beating the bejesus out of him but you know, im not surprised. the NYPD is an organization that considers shoving a toilet plunger handle up someone's ass an interrogation technique.

This should be in Chicken Soup for the Indie Rocker. Maria is OTM all over the place here.

At what point did anyone in BSS direct anything about this at the Intonation audience? I wrote yesterday that K Drew jokingly said "America, fuck you," and that everyone basically laughed good-naturedly about it; I've since been corrected, because he actually said "America, fuck yeah," as in the Team America theme song. So I'm lost as to this supposed audience/nation abuse, and if my recap had anything to do with creating that impression, I'd worry about the way people read.

So for the record, their attitude about this was basically pretty shruggy: hahaha, we send him into New York with a friend we thought was responsible, and like idiots they go do this, but then look what happened. After the set, Newfeld himself seemed generally unbitter about the country, and had basically two rants to go on -- one pretty sensible one about US drug laws and jails that I imagine most everyone here would largely agree with, and one not-very-sensible one about 9/11 and the Nazi origins of the CIA that barely bears talking about. Both rants were couched in lots of apologies -- "you've got a great country and so many cool people here, but X and Y and Z are just ridiculous," etc.

Actually I think Maria's referencing a BSS show from a couple summers ago, held here in Philadelphia.

Nevermind, then. They'd chilled out about it by Saturday.

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 21 July 2005 16:52 (twenty years ago)

newfeld's comments about drug laws were accurate, i agree. im not complaining about him. my issue is with kevin drew, who just sounds like an ass everytime he steps to the mic. whenever he throws around "america" he means the audience, which is insulting on so many levels.

couple years back in philly he went on this rant about how fucked up the iraq war was but then proceeded to tell the audience they were to blame for it. i mean, where the fuck does he get off? its like being invited to a party and then badmouthing the host.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Thursday, 21 July 2005 16:54 (twenty years ago)

jt, was it a summer show? i distinctly recall it being in fall or winter. i wont set foot inside the church from april to september.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Thursday, 21 July 2005 16:55 (twenty years ago)

It may have been September, Maria. I remember you called to say I should be there instead of seeing BRMC. It was probably a push after the bizarro anti-war comments, although when BRMC's bassist stumbled through the crowd that was pretty lame too. xpost
