Is Jim DeRogatis this much of an idiot?

Or is his fact-check I just finished reading his article about the upcoming Intonation Festival in Chicago and apparently he has never or barely listened to any of the acts playing.

Up for debate but I think is completely way off is his description of Deerhoof -

"San Francisco's Deerhoof (5:30, Holiday Stage) is a purposely naive and childlike (a la the White Stripes) noise-pop band"

Deerhoof = White Stripes ?!?! huh?

Most annoying because this is just blantant bad reporting is the he say The Go! Team is from Memphis? NO! Their record label is Memphis Industries. That's like a 30 second google check to figure that one out.

Anyway here is a link to the article

He should have gone further out so it would read like a Meltzer preview.

miccio (miccio), Friday, 15 July 2005 14:42 (twenty years ago)

he said they were naive and childlike like the white stripes. not that they sounded like them.

i think the other derogatis threads have established with certainty that he is an idiot.

This part actually reads like Meltzer, especially Rob Lowe and the El-P vs. James McNew parts.

In addition to the two main stages, Intonation will feature a DJ stage hosting a series of hot underground turntablists. Saturday's lineup includes Rob Lowe (1:30 p.m.), Laurent from Pelican (3:30) and Will Oldham and Jean Grae (5:30 and 7:30). Sunday's lineup features Peter from Baby Teeth (1:30), Reine from Dungen (3:30), El P vs. James McNew of Yo La Tengo (5:30) and Diplo (7:30).

He also spelled Four Tet as one word, but whatever. This column ranks so low in the ranks of egregiously bad DeRogatis pieces that it's prob. not worth getting too worked up about.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 15 July 2005 15:00 (twenty years ago)

he sort of renders those onion parody columns redundant doesn't he?

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Friday, 15 July 2005 15:02 (twenty years ago)

Sunday's lineup features Peter from Baby Teeth (1:30), Reine from Dungen (3:30),

OMG he's on a first name basis with THE GUY FROM BABY TEETH and SOMEONE FROM DUNGEN! Oh the perks of the music critic!

I know it's not big deal. I rarely read his stuff but this to me seems beyond amatuerish.

Particle Ranger (particle ranger), Friday, 15 July 2005 15:05 (twenty years ago)

I he said he doesn't say deerhoof sounds like the white stripes but i think the comparison is totally misguided.

"Hey, Laurent, what's up? Sweet DJ set. Later!"

You people are way too tough! There is no way any 7-word blurb intelligible to Sun-Times readers is going to constitute an adequate, appealing description of Deerhoof. Obviously, White Stripes is sort of a strained comparison, but less so if you remember that irony (or poker-faced lack thereof) is as much part of Jack White's toolkit as his guitar. So what I think it is trying to communicate (in a way that can be understood by the general public) is "This band is outrageously full of shit, but in a way you may find entertaining."

How's everyone's gig going at their respective major newspapers?

I like how the beginning post is so full of frothing about DeRo being an idiot that the poster's command of the English language is thrown out the window.

Brett Hickman (Bhickman), Friday, 15 July 2005 15:46 (twenty years ago)

derogatis may or may not be an idiot (my opinions on the topic have been widely expressed elsewhere), but no fucking way does the mere fact of comparing Band A to Band B when other people happen to disagree with said comparison make him (or anybody else) one.

xhuxk, Friday, 15 July 2005 15:49 (twenty years ago)

so you would disagree and consider derogatis to be a bright, incisive, probing writer

Reading DeRogatis "Milk It" book is all the evidence the world needs of his total idiocy.
