Any word on the Wowee Zowee reissue?

I haven't heard anything about a Wowee Zowee reissue. This would be the ten year mark. Does Matador actually have plans to put this out?

wmlynch (wlynch), Friday, 15 July 2005 20:01 (twenty years ago)

Not this year. Maybe next, depending on how interested the members of the band are in putting it together.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 15 July 2005 20:04 (twenty years ago)

Do they have to record all the songs again or something?? That's weird that the band would even have to be involved.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 15 July 2005 20:44 (twenty years ago)

hahaha no tracer they have to approve artwork, which extra material to include (a la the s&e and crcr reissues), who gets to write liner notes, etc. i'd imagine they'll eventually get around to it, wz's a popular album among pavement fans, fo sho.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 15 July 2005 20:46 (twenty years ago)

I'd be surprised if WZ got the deluxe reissue treatment.

Brooker Buckingham (Brooker B), Friday, 15 July 2005 20:46 (twenty years ago)

That seems very vain to me.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 15 July 2005 20:49 (twenty years ago)

it's vain for a band to be involved in the design/marketing/actual product when their record is reissued? i suppose it is when compared with the old era of bands getting ripped off, "historia de la musica rock" comps and whatnot, but sheesh.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 15 July 2005 20:51 (twenty years ago)

xpost - I'd be surprised if it didn't - with a fanbase as rabid as Pavement's it'd be a cash cow fer sure. Why do you think they wouldn't?

Zack Richardson (teenagequiet), Friday, 15 July 2005 20:51 (twenty years ago)

I mean, I guess if they have nothing else to do.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 15 July 2005 20:52 (twenty years ago)

That seems like a pretty likely situation to me

Zack Richardson (teenagequiet), Friday, 15 July 2005 20:54 (twenty years ago)

S&E and CRCR have been accepted as classics outside of the Pavement fanbase, whereas their other records seem to be of interest only to the hardcore fans.

I'm a fan of all of em, don't get me wrong.

Brooker Buckingham (Brooker B), Friday, 15 July 2005 20:54 (twenty years ago)

dunno where you're getting that, since all five records sell well, but whatever. speculation's useless until matador announces something, and there ain't anything on the release schedule for this year.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 15 July 2005 20:56 (twenty years ago)

Ok, talk to you later!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 15 July 2005 20:56 (twenty years ago)

when i saw SM two weeks back, he wasnt sure if there was gonna be one.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Friday, 15 July 2005 21:00 (twenty years ago)

I mean, I guess if they have nothing else to do.

well you know, that mark ibold, he's a busy guy.

the urban heat island effect (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 15 July 2005 21:01 (twenty years ago)

no need to get snippy, th. i'm sitting in the warehouse right now. if there were secret planz, well, i'd keep 'em secret, but i'm sure somebody would tell ya.

and m@rk does seem like a busy guy, to me. he's got two jobs!

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 15 July 2005 21:18 (twenty years ago)

I'm hoping he has another cameo in the Strangers with Candy movie.

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 15 July 2005 21:21 (twenty years ago)

Gee, I hope Sub Pop does a deluxe reissue of "Harmacy".

I hope Merge does a deluxe reissue of "Indoor Living".

Brooker Buckingham (Brooker B), Friday, 15 July 2005 21:28 (twenty years ago)

With huge fold-out breakdowns of what each band member ate and when during the recording sessions!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 15 July 2005 21:30 (twenty years ago)

I read some interview were Malkmus says there weren't that many outtakes, etc. That he doesn't really see the need for one.

miccio (miccio), Friday, 15 July 2005 21:33 (twenty years ago)

"certain parties have held that Ibold favored a pastrami and rye for the afternoon of the eighth day, giving the 'marble mall' lyric an extra connotation of fat and gristle, but this Anniversary Reissue Project has definitively brought to light Ibold's hastily telephoned order for a turkey club with fries on the side"

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 15 July 2005 21:35 (twenty years ago)

He's such a party pooper. WZ's b-sides were great, and they alone justify some kind of expanded reissue.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 15 July 2005 21:35 (twenty years ago)

"Tracking note marginalia also indicate Malkmus had switched from Northern Lights to Maui Wowee for these sessions."

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 15 July 2005 21:37 (twenty years ago)

PACIFIC TRIM!

Jimmy Mod Is Sick of Being The Best At Everything (ModJ), Friday, 15 July 2005 21:38 (twenty years ago)

ooh, turkey club with fries.

the urban heat island effect (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 15 July 2005 21:40 (twenty years ago)

And stencil you call this speculation useless.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 15 July 2005 21:44 (twenty years ago)

pactrim was salvaged from the abandoned silver jews sessions (no ibold nor stairs plus "no more kings" and perhaps another song but i can't remember).

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 15 July 2005 21:44 (twenty years ago)

well at least the other people on this thread sound like fans, tracer.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 15 July 2005 23:00 (twenty years ago)

There were a lot of Wowee demos on the CRCR reissue. I really hope they do release it, that said I've hardly listened to CRCR since I bought the reissue.

dog latin (dog latin), Saturday, 16 July 2005 14:05 (twenty years ago)

I hope there is one, as the B-sides were great.. maybe there will be one big B-side outtake 2-CD compilation for the last three albums instead?

donut ferry (donut), Saturday, 16 July 2005 17:47 (twenty years ago)

But WZ was 1996, I think, so for a 10th anniversary, it would have to wait until next year anyway.

donut ferry (donut), Saturday, 16 July 2005 17:49 (twenty years ago)

i, fer one, would love to have it 're-beefed' {not a food pun, really}. seems when i listen to WZ now, it seems quiet. maybe it's my hearing going.

wasn't WZ more a collection of songs they were doing live and decided to put down finally? i faintly recall hearing something to that effect. but, i mean it works so well all together! bundled w/ PT would be marvelous. still don't like saginaw...

i though WZ was 95.

eedd, Saturday, 16 July 2005 17:58 (twenty years ago)

a Pavement b-sides comp always seemed a better idea than deluxe reissues, nice pics and liner notes notwithstanding.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Saturday, 16 July 2005 18:35 (twenty years ago)

Is "I Love Perth" circa Wowee Zowee? I've only heard the cover version on the tribute album. It's cute -- would be nice to have the original in circulation.

Derek Krissoff (Derek), Saturday, 16 July 2005 18:53 (twenty years ago)

a b-sides comp would've been acceptable.

though, those CRCR demos/outtakes are pretty mega. i personally enjoy having the cake and eating it, too.

edde, Sunday, 17 July 2005 01:51 (twenty years ago)

I'm pretty sure they were doing I Love Perth live right around then. I remember hearing a great live version that was much faster and spunkier than the one that ended up on the Pacific Trim 7".

wmlynch (wlynch), Sunday, 17 July 2005 22:16 (twenty years ago)

yeah, i find it hard to complain about the CRCR and S&E reissues, considering the price for both of them was so reasonable-i think i bought the CRCR for $14, which is ridiculously low, considering what other "deluxe editions" go for. i'm sure they could dig up enough b sides, live stuff, early versions for a wowee reissue. it'll probably happen sooner or later.

Stence I would think it was just as vain were Sonic Youth to do a 10-year-anniversary reissue of "Experimental Jet Set, Trash and No Star" or if Stereolab did a deluxe reissue of "Emperor Tomato Ketchup" .. I mean, it would be no crime but, why? For the record, I got Wowee Zowee the day it came out and had been listening to the wobbly 8th generation tapes of it for weeks beforehand, the very ones that Malkmus later blamed Wowee Zowee's poor sales on. My first disappointment upon tearing off the shrink wrap was that they had left an entire side blank. Maybe that's what they're going to fix with the reissue.
