Queen Adreena - gothic or dud

Hey! Soooooo she supposedly has three albums or something but I just heard of her for the first time a few days ago.. I know one of you will pop round to tell me "hey, it's just xxx from Daisy Chainsaw, don't get so excited" but I WANT to get excited.. unfortunately I can find no ringtones for "Fuck Me Doll" anywhere! I think that's a great song although it scares the crap outta me. I can't listen to it on headphones too late at night or I'll have trouble going to sleep.

ALWAYS get excited when Katie Jane Garside is involved in something. She's scarycutehot.

I haven't heard the new one yet, but the first two have some definite endearing qualities (and some filler, natch).

I saw them at Glastonbury a couple of years ago. They were very impressive. KJG gives the impression that she is actually mental rather than just pretending, which gives the whole thing an air of freakshow cool. She is kind of hot, but you would probably be arrested if you tried anything on with her. Actually, now that I think of it, she was a bit on the scrawny side, which makes her less hot.

But yeah, theatrical live performance, big riffs, scary lady on vocals.

I've seen them a couple of times in support slots, most bizarrely with Rollins, and been absolutely blown away by their live act.

The sound is an amalgam of early 80's Goth influences: the guitar reminded me of X-Mal Deutschland and the bass sound was a classic Tracy Pew kick in the head. At the time, I didn't want to be reminded of any of that, but they served it up with such flair and venom, I couldn't help but be won over. The songwriting is also a lot sharper than what passed in the first wave of goth. As for Kate as frontperson - fuck, I've never seen anything like it. As intense as PJ Harvey, but the personalities are so different the comparison becomes irrelevant.

If their influences and origins weren't so massively unfashionable, I think they'd be huge. The albums are well worth acquiring if none of the above puts you off. But see them live.

Just heard "Pretty Like Drugs," not bad but fairly NIN-esque.

This thread needs pictures, I believe.

Good, good.... I like the slow build on this thread, like a huge, lugubrious riff. But it's a little stoner-rock right now. It needs to get more slashing and rasping.

"unfashionable influences" -- what!! ?

like the influences multiplatinum "artist" Marilyn Manson has..?? (whom Queen Adreena is opening for?)

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Saturday, 16 July 2005 21:03 (twenty years ago)

sorry, that didn't really work. we could also talk about Silverfish! I don't think there's ever been a thread about Silverfish.

I'm not sure I like any of her songs, except for "Hotel After Show" and "FM Doll," both of which simultaneously thrill me and scare me to the quick of my bones.

Hadn't realised there's a new album - what's it like?

Soukesian, Tuesday, 19 July 2005 06:01 (twenty years ago)

Well, since I posted above, I've actually heard it now. I like it much more than either of the first two. It's all peaks instead of mostly valleys.

I loved 'Pretty Like Drugs' when it came out, I think it dovetailed nicely with my riot grrl phase. god. salad days B(

She's built like a steakhouse, but she handles like a bistro! (Adrian Langston), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 06:51 (twenty years ago)

her sister (Melanie) is just as interesting :

mark e (mark e), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 06:56 (twenty years ago)

According to the newest Queen Adreena photos, Melanie's in the band now too.

four months pass...
I was never really a Daisy Chainsaw fan (they were fine, maybe I should go back and revisit)

I really, really like this new record though.

three years pass...

New record Djin released in Japan this past November. No better or worse than any of the other ones really (you either like the band or don't), but "Killer (Tits)" is a helluva song.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 5 January 2009 08:58 (seventeen years ago)

Helluva title, I look forward to hearing it. Good to hear they're still active (or big in Japan anyway), some European dates would be nice.
