well, i always felt the jacob's optical stairway was pretty firmly in the d+b camp. some of the tracks have detroit-esque melodies and such, and the keyboard work is very shiny and the rhythms are quite foreshortened but if that's the criteria we can safely call "black secret technology" and quite a few alex reece tracks "a mix of d+b and detroit techno".

something that always surprised me: how seriously underwhelming the nu era album turned out to be. especially because their track from "deepest shade of techno" is one of the best from that comp.

ok here are a couple for the hardcore broken beat nerds:

t/s: 2000black's "the goodgood" vs planet e's "the goodgood" (andy k to thread?)

t/s: laws of motion vs people

another fantastic dego project: his eps as "plutonia" on the visions, inc. label.

look for a track called "forever", it's like prime early cinematic orchestra, except spun into insane aggressive rippling breakbeat territory. there's this great plucked bassline, june tyson styled vocals, huge bass farts, etc. there's also a remix by opaque (aka seiji).

this is not detroit technoid in the least, btw.

The Nu Era ep on Archive "Broken Techno" is absolutely wicked!

Mind you I thought the Nu Era Beyond Gravity Lp was pretty special

The compilation put together by Volcov on Irma called "Soul in Motion" is reminscent of the Deeper Shade of Techno lps. Features Nu Era, Hanna, Carl Craig, etc...

Nu Era - Some Think Electronic (Twisted Funk 1203)

!!!

equinox, Wednesday, 27 June 2001 03:18 (twenty-four years ago)

i like the idea of nu era doing a cover of "breakin in space". but really, i thought their album (and the broken techno ep) was pretty forgettable stuff!!

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 27 June 2001 03:28 (twenty-four years ago)

have you ever heard the jacob's optical stairway album, jess? (i think it might be pre broken beat, but i haven't heard it for some time. i think it might be ambient dnb...)

tricky (disco stu), Monday, 18 July 2005 01:40 (twenty years ago)

the deepest shade of techno also had 4 hero and morgan geist involvement altho it's def more techno than broken beat. the seeds for broken beat are there tho. woah it was released in '96.

tricky (disco stu), Monday, 18 July 2005 01:42 (twenty years ago)

yes, i have been listening to the jos album quite a bit lately. and i am listening to the deepest shade of techno comp right now!! perhaps there is nothing left for me here.

vahid (vahid), Monday, 18 July 2005 05:56 (twenty years ago)

search:
pavel kostiuk & the musicals
cousin cockroach - this ain't tom & jerry/hands off the controls
cousin cockroach & shox (kaidi tatham) - king tut fool/my hifi
phil asher - having your fun (4 hero remix)
dkd - future rage
4 hero - hold it down

destroy - recent Silhouette Brown album with Kaidi Tatham

other stuff like scattered snares:
any thing on the Zest label (owned by the hidden agenda boys)
select tunes on bitasweet (freeq unique, mark force 'gypo', kudu)
solid groove remix of warrior queen 'almighty father'
maddslinky (zed bias!) - desert fog/reject
somatik - interaktion (two killer 12s on twisted funk)
paradox - a black sun
chaka domu & buju volcov - souljah
mark force - mpFree

check that stuff out, let me know what you think...

heywood jablomi (heywood), Monday, 18 July 2005 06:26 (twenty years ago)

i love the bugz in the attic remix of "hold it down"!

a team blog for dance music sounds like a good idea.

tricky (disco stu), Monday, 18 July 2005 13:38 (twenty years ago)

yes, please do that

W i l l (common_person), Monday, 18 July 2005 14:13 (twenty years ago)

The album you are looking for is

Jacobs Optical Stairway on R+S Records

Produced by Dego and Marc Mac - features Juan Atkins and Josh Wink

Nice Lp - mix of D+B and Detroit Techno - and has a green lunar cover!

aqua, Monday, 18 July 2005 14:23 (twenty years ago)

Broken beat leaves me cold in the main - techno + d+b bodies flexing their musician aspirations and sounding like Roy Ayres lite in the process...

Bukem and Good Looking ended up down the same cul de sac with Cookin' Records as did Carl Craig with Innerzone Orchestra Lp

aqua, Monday, 18 July 2005 20:07 (twenty years ago)

Vahid

Whats all this about Dego and this Plutonia project?

Is it techno or bruk?

aqua, Monday, 18 July 2005 20:10 (twenty years ago)

yeah, "broken techno" is indeed a great ep. i forgot all about that one.

tricky (disco stu), Monday, 18 July 2005 20:52 (twenty years ago)

nu era - marz 2010

tricky (disco stu), Monday, 18 July 2005 21:15 (twenty years ago)

plutonia is the name dego uses for releases on alex attias' visions inc label. technically it's broken beat - but something really keeps me from wanting to say "it's broken beat" - i guess i am afraid you will think it sounds like bugz in the attic, which it doesn't.

not sure i can sum it up any better than i already did - it sounds like cinematic orchestra but with a fungly-jungly beat sensibility. i'll try to dig up my copy of "chromatic universe" (the visions inc mix comp) and YSI the track, if i can...

vahid (vahid), Monday, 18 July 2005 22:15 (twenty years ago)

Was the Maddslinky album any good in the end? It's still the only Zed Bias album to actually have come out, yeah? Unless that Phuturistix album was released on a run of about 20 copies...

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 18 July 2005 22:21 (twenty years ago)

vahid - otm about plutonia, although it's a collaboration between attias and dego, not a solo joint. 'forever' is the shit. that seiji mix sat in the dj box for years.
also amazing on the same 12 as the seiji/opaque remix of 'forever' is 'wear your size' which has a killer ascending melody that i love.

i won't weigh in on the 'good good' TS but people beats laws of motion hands down, despite LOM having some classic 12s. (and the mindblowing Agent K album)

tim, the maddslinky album has its moments but is largely forgettable. stick with the singles. and the phuturistix album did actualy come out, albeit a year after it was promo'd.

heywood jablomi (heywood), Monday, 18 July 2005 22:59 (twenty years ago)

t/s: 2000black's "the goodgood" vs planet e's "the goodgood" (andy k to thread?)

Yes, I have the two releases. (I swear I only paid for one of them.)

The Planet E one has much better artwork. Other differences I can recall: not much. The 2000 Black one has a Kostiuk track with Roy Ayers and 4hero's "Naima," which is better than it should be. There's a decent Nu Era track on the Planet E version that's not on the other.

(The 2000 Black version has a track featuring DJ scratches from "Selwyn Hines" -- this is actually journalist Selwyn Hinds, no?)

People crushes Laws of Motion.

Andy_K (Andy_K), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 11:26 (twenty years ago)

b-b-but laws of motion has kaidi tatham!!

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 11:41 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, that is true.

It's been a while since I last paid much attention to this stuff.

I wish more broken beat producers went in the same direction as Kostiuk's "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" -- all tensed-up, irascible.

Andy_K (Andy_K), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 11:51 (twenty years ago)

s/d Laws of Motion:

S:
modaji - 'outboard jepoardy'
bb boogie - 'tell him'
maddslinky - 'cargo'
agent k - feed the cat
agent k - 'ladies'
neon fusion - 'it's another'
neon fusion - 'space jam'
neon fusion - the future ain't the same as it used 2 B
agent k - 'armz r deh'
stephane attias - 'brazillian fight song'
hipnotic - 'naima' ian o'brien remix

D:
most modaji & tom noble material

heywood jablomi (heywood), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 19:20 (twenty years ago)

modaji - starburst over orion

(pure detroit synth bliss!!)

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 21:50 (twenty years ago)

nice list btw. i could add some "d" ... in a sec here ...

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 21:51 (twenty years ago)

people has much better coherent aesthetic (sleeve design) than laws of motions (whos labels look awful)

also, people recs are much better

eg new sector movements.

ambrose (ambrose), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 22:09 (twenty years ago)

well i dunno about the sleeves looking awful but people definitely has a design edge over LoM. they also have far more consistently boundary-pushing releases than LoM.

heywood jablomi (heywood), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 23:50 (twenty years ago)
