another good regio electronic rock band is Album, they played at the recent South by Southwest www.somosalbum.com

and other (led by Martin Thulin) is Los Fancy Free at www.noiselab.com/losfancyfree

El Gran Silencio... i guess they just don't have a label right now. Natalia Lafourcade has changed the name of her project to Natalia y La Forquetina. www.nataliaylaforquetina.com

four years pass...
I've been lurking at this board for a while, and just now decided to emerge...

I live in Monterrey, México. The main music is the usual ranchero/norteño music, product of long years, many smalltown dances. family traditions and influences. But, also as usual, we have some indie bands, hope you like to hear 'em.

First (hehehe) my band, Los Llamaradas, a Fall- influenced group www.myspace.com/losllamarada
I also have some lo-fi solo tracks at www.myspace.com/saganyouth

Taladro Supremo play noise rock (www.myspace.com/taladrosupremo) and are starting an indie label, www.nenerecords.com.mx

Quiero Club (www.myspace.com/quieroclub) are one of the most fun & promising acts, playing bouncy synthpop and indie as part of the Happy-Fi community at www.happyfi.com

Seekers who are lovers is a minimal pop project by Angel Sánchez Borges (Antiguo Autómata Mexicano) at Soundsister Records (www.soundsister.com).

Espero que les agraden. Gracias.

I heard a great Mexican single - Mi Gordis - do you know who does that?
I'll check out your stuff, thx.

Señor Sagan.. do you like the Dead C, Rose For Bhodan, or Gang Wizard, or Bunnybrains? Like the songs!

donut ferry (donut), Monday, 18 July 2005 03:17 (twenty years ago)

i'm really glad you started this thread. i've often wondered what the kids in mexico listen to. i knew it couldn't all be norteño. isn't mexico city (or was it Juahaca?) supposed to be a super duper artsy city? a friend of mine moved down there for a few months to be a tattoo artist.

i'd love to know what else is big/good

The Amazing Jaxon! (jaxon), Monday, 18 July 2005 04:03 (twenty years ago)

orbit... la mayoría de este material todavía no está a la venta, así que tendrás que conformarte con bajarlos... por un tiempo.
donut ferry: i've heard some tracks from Dead C, í'm not familiar with the other bands you mention.

I guess the mexican acts with the bigger international profile are the old ones (horrible bands like Jaguares, Maná)... The ones with better international profile are those of Nortec Collective, but they aren't very very popular here...
A few years ago we had a media-created "movement" called the Avanzada Regia, with younger bands like Plastilina Mosh, Jumbo, Zurdok, El Gran Silencio. Now, they have mostly lost label support, so most of the action happens in the underground.

Another good project is Carrie (www.myspace.com/carriestatic ), with her single "Cat Power" at the Tijuana-based Static Discos www.staticdiscos.com, with the collaboration of Fax and Murcof.

Sagan- can we get Mp3 or CD burns of this stuff--I'll pay you for them.

There's this scene in Mexico City where are growing bands like Austin Tv, Hummersqueal, Los Dynamite, Sad Breakfast, The Cosmetics, Maria Daniela Y Su Sonido Lasser, Yokozuna, Veo Muertos and Zoe. From Guadalajara you could find Hugo, Porter, Thermo and Vainilla, from Monterrey there's this whole Happy Fi thing going on with bands like Quiero Club, Niña, a solo project by Goma and the almighty She's A Tease, however none of them have no more than one song recorded but Niña and no record out yet, and from Monterrey you can also find Abeja.

Here are some links.

yay, thanks for all the input! hey, is it really true that El Gran Silencio has broken up? impossible to get info up here. grr...I was once called "el gringo chuntaro" because I love them so much. also, any news of our little friend Natalia Lafourcade? are her new songs showing up on the radio yet, or are they all delayed?

Haikunym (Haikunym), Monday, 18 July 2005 15:34 (twenty years ago)

Los de Abajo are great, too!

sibsi (sibsi), Monday, 18 July 2005 20:26 (twenty years ago)

El Gran Silencio is in the middle of a fight with EMI, their record, label 'cause they are trying to put out their Vol. 2 of Chuntaros Radio Poder and the label wants'em to put out something more friendly... I think the next step is a Greatest Hits, just like Plastilina Mosh is doing. Natalia Lafourcade just released a new album, 4 songs or so were produced by Meme from Cafe Tacvba. The reason why Natalia changed her name is 'cause she's been brainwashed by the guys who were her backup band and they convinced her that they were a band.

I guess she wanted them to be her friends :)

EMI es muy estupido, Super Riddim Vol. 1 es MUY radio-friendly. Y tu noticias de Natalia es interesante, pero la mujer joven tiene porciones de tiempo para recuperarse de errores tontos como esto.

Haikunym (Haikunym), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 13:37 (twenty years ago)

Happy Fi have dissapointed me, they've failed to deliver because Chayo, the designer and member of niña, has fits of recalcitrant christianity and always falls in schedule.

I'm thru with those douches now. About the only band from MOnterrey I still listen is Jumbo.

BTW, the post-moco Gran Silencio is shit.
