Kim Gordon. She's a musical genius.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Monday, 18 July 2005 21:00 (twenty years ago)

her trailer for gus van sants new cobain movie is umm very special

dan bunnybrain (dan bunnybrain), Monday, 18 July 2005 21:03 (twenty years ago)

Just want a girl as cool as Kim Deal, obv.

+ indie darling vs. indie darling + chart topper favors Kim D.

Also, she has a longer wikipedia entry, so there's that.

rogermexico (rogermexico), Monday, 18 July 2005 21:04 (twenty years ago)

Deal

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Monday, 18 July 2005 21:07 (twenty years ago)

Kim Deal, even if Courtney Love is right and she does smell.

Brett Hickman (Bhickman), Monday, 18 July 2005 21:10 (twenty years ago)

Kim Deal. Yeah, let's see Kim Gordon start her own band.

Points should also be awarded to Kim Coletta.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Monday, 18 July 2005 21:27 (twenty years ago)

Kim Deal.

And some love for Kim Warnick too.

Ben Dot (1977), Monday, 18 July 2005 21:37 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, let's see Kim Gordon start her own band.

Um... Free Kitten? Anxious Rats? the SYR 5 EP with Ikue Morie and DJ Olive?

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Monday, 18 July 2005 21:38 (twenty years ago)

Gordon. She has it all.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 18 July 2005 21:41 (twenty years ago)

kim gordon was in a better band, but i like "cannonball" more than any sonic youth song. very close, but i pick gordon.

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Monday, 18 July 2005 21:42 (twenty years ago)

i'd rather do kim

anais, Monday, 18 July 2005 21:45 (twenty years ago)

kim shattuck

fact checking cuz (fcc), Monday, 18 July 2005 21:52 (twenty years ago)

kim deal, definitely. better bass player, better singer, better songwriter. better collaborating with other people. end of story. what would you rather listen to: the amps or harry crews? exactly, neither. but you would pick the amps if their was a gun pointed at your head.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 18 July 2005 22:09 (twenty years ago)

rogermexico (rogermexico), Monday, 18 July 2005 22:10 (twenty years ago)

Josephine Wiggs is better at everything.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Monday, 18 July 2005 22:12 (twenty years ago)

better bass player

arguable

, better singer

eh.. it's really a stylistic thing. I much prefer Gordon.

, better songwriter.

No.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Monday, 18 July 2005 22:13 (twenty years ago)

Kim Deal I think is better. People just like Kim Gordon because she's married to Thurston Moore or because they're anti-comformists.

Kim Deal Wins.

Michael Costello (MichaelCostello1), Monday, 18 July 2005 22:16 (twenty years ago)

what band was kim deal in?

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Monday, 18 July 2005 22:17 (twenty years ago)

You know, we could all just quit the bitching and listen to "Little Trouble Girl" all day!

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Monday, 18 July 2005 22:17 (twenty years ago)

what band was kim deal in?

Pixies, Breeders, The Amps.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Monday, 18 July 2005 22:18 (twenty years ago)

"anti conformists"?

dan bunnybrain (dan bunnybrain), Monday, 18 July 2005 22:20 (twenty years ago)

sorry, Non-Comformists.

Michael Costello (MichaelCostello1), Monday, 18 July 2005 22:21 (twenty years ago)

oh....i thought u meant they drive a Prius

dan bunnybrain (dan bunnybrain), Monday, 18 July 2005 22:27 (twenty years ago)

Impassive slatterns. Love'em both.

TS: "Swimsuit Issue" vs "Do You Love Me Now?"

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Monday, 18 July 2005 22:48 (twenty years ago)

"Josephine Wiggs is better at everything."

she definitely wins a most boring and forgettable musican life-time achievement award from me. IF i were to hand out such an award. which i don't at the present time.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 18 July 2005 22:49 (twenty years ago)

impudent strumpets

dan bunnybrain (dan bunnybrain), Monday, 18 July 2005 22:50 (twenty years ago)

"DYLMN?" is better

Michael Costello (MichaelCostello1), Monday, 18 July 2005 22:51 (twenty years ago)

TS: "Swimsuit Issue" vs "Do You Love Me Now?"
An easier one than the main question..."Do You Love Me Now?" kills that tune.

As for the Kims, I love them both too. I like Sonic Youth but never loved them like Pixies. I go with Deal.

p.j. (Henry), Monday, 18 July 2005 22:53 (twenty years ago)

"Do You Love Me Now?," yeah.

I like Last Splash as much as any Pixies album, so.

kim deal...in a heart beat...

eedd, Tuesday, 19 July 2005 00:09 (twenty years ago)

Kim Gordon by a couple of light years.

Scream! Scrovula, Scream! (noodle vague), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 00:14 (twenty years ago)

Courtney Love criticized someone else's personal hygiene?

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 02:42 (twenty years ago)

takes one to know one i suppose

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 03:02 (twenty years ago)

Gordon's a trustfund kid. Deal's 4 real. Plus, Deal's got better skin.

maria b (maria b), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 06:19 (twenty years ago)

just on a vocal level, deal's got it.
don't get me wrong, i luv me some 'Bro. James' and 'PCH' and some others, but hell c'mon!
'Pacer'(the album) is STILL one of my personal favorites...
rawks.so.nice.

eedd, Tuesday, 19 July 2005 17:14 (twenty years ago)

seems like a good idea

tylerw, Friday, 14 September 2012 22:35 (thirteen years ago)

four years pass...

these days I've changed my mind to Deal. Those first couple Breeders records + the Amps' "Pacer" are unique and underrated

Οὖτις, Monday, 19 June 2017 21:47 (eight years ago)

wonder what Deal's "Girl In A Band"-style memoir would be like

tylerw, Monday, 19 June 2017 22:02 (eight years ago)

I read some recent interview with her where she was being v forthright about aging (not married, no kids, caring for sick/invalid parents) and it really made me feel for her. Plus the sobriety angle. Her and Gordon had very different lives.

Οὖτις, Monday, 19 June 2017 22:12 (eight years ago)

this thread is kinda gross though, reading over it

I think there is something highly unusual, maybe even unique, about Deal's role in rock culture and indie rock culture. To go from what was essentially a second-fiddle role in a band that wasn't quite that huge to something where she was the leader/songwriter/singer of a female-dominated group that surpassed her old band in popularity and cultural ubiquity by virtue of her strange combo of bubblegum pop instincts and love of noise/distortion but then there's this grim underside of drug abuse and isolation and it all goes to shit and now no one talks about her, she's like a forgotten one-hit wonder (whereas Gordon still has that dialed-in NY art/fashion/media scene to sustain her and also had the family experience)

Οὖτις, Monday, 19 June 2017 22:20 (eight years ago)

Deal

Unchanging Window (Ross), Monday, 19 June 2017 23:13 (eight years ago)

Deal is an icon for me. I admire Gordon a lot, but from a distance. Deal's writing, voice, persona all connect very directly. There are days when she's my all-time favourite songwriter - golden pop sensibility shot through with chaos and darkness. Find me another song as tight-and-loose as London Song or Sinister Foxx, or as offhand menacing as Doe. She's truly unique in an unassuming way.

attention vampire (MatthewK), Monday, 19 June 2017 23:29 (eight years ago)

Her and Gordon had very different lives.
they are very different people! imagine that!

this thread is kinda gross though, reading over it
no surprise here either

i identify with deal about 1000x more (as a person) but it was fun to read gordon's memoir just to see what life was like for her

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Monday, 19 June 2017 23:45 (eight years ago)

don't count out the later breeders albums, there's good stuff on mountain battles and especially title tk too. the amps album is probably her pinnacle though.

na (NA), Tuesday, 20 June 2017 01:14 (eight years ago)

Title TK is my fave. And Pod of course. I enjoy Pacer but it's slightly too loose and unfocused (sounds a lot boozier than TTK).

attention vampire (MatthewK), Tuesday, 20 June 2017 01:32 (eight years ago)

Fuck Thurston

bodacious ignoramus, Tuesday, 20 June 2017 01:45 (eight years ago)

bodacious OTM

Unchanging Window (Ross), Tuesday, 20 June 2017 01:48 (eight years ago)

New Breeders album should hopefully be here soon! They finished recording it a while back.

cwkiii, Tuesday, 20 June 2017 01:49 (eight years ago)

Thurston Moore pretty much turning into the Sonic Youth-loving Jason Bateman character from Juno is one of the more bizarre things to have happened in recent years. Thurston still gets to hang out and make lists of his favorite albums on the cool websites too.

nomar, Tuesday, 20 June 2017 01:50 (eight years ago)

Her and Gordon had very different lives.
they are very different people! imagine that!

Yeah well I didnt start this thread or invite the comparison, i just wanted to talk about kim deal and she doesn't have a dedicated thread.

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 20 June 2017 01:58 (eight years ago)

I'm loving the mini-revival for Pacer here. I feel like a lot of Gordon's SY songs are underrated but def Deal has connected to more profoundly; I like-to-love every single album of hers. Shakes & MatthewK & La Lechera all otm here

the rockists' red glare (Drugs A. Money), Tuesday, 20 June 2017 04:05 (eight years ago)

Pacer's one of my fav five or so albums, probably. Always love listening to it. Only picked it up by chance, Back when vinyl wasn't selling much and The Amps had about 10% of the name recognition of The Breeders (iirc Deal once said not just calling it the third Breeders album was her biggest career regret).

albvivertine, Tuesday, 20 June 2017 06:48 (eight years ago)

haha how was that not the first post on this thread

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 20 June 2017 15:43 (eight years ago)

"Bragging Party" looms over all other songs of the 90s, in my imagination.

geoffreyess, Tuesday, 20 June 2017 15:58 (eight years ago)

otm that song is unbelievable.

tylerw, Tuesday, 20 June 2017 16:00 (eight years ago)

haha it's so good my band sampled it

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 20 June 2017 16:03 (eight years ago)

lol it was never clear to me if she was singing "memorized breaths" (as a ref to the harmonies in the song) or "memorized breasts" (which is also funny)

all the static noise on the vocal obscures the phrasing

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 20 June 2017 16:04 (eight years ago)

so I guess I need this Amps album, huh?

sleeve, Tuesday, 20 June 2017 16:06 (eight years ago)

yes!

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 20 June 2017 16:06 (eight years ago)

to quote the album itself, it's full of... mythic noise

geoffreyess, Tuesday, 20 June 2017 16:09 (eight years ago)

I've always been a big Pod fan but somehow the Amps thing was never on my radar

sleeve, Tuesday, 20 June 2017 16:16 (eight years ago)

Deal's probably otm that releasing the album under a different name from the Breeders was a colossal mistake. You'd think that a follow-up to a huge album would've gotten more attention but it really kind of disappeared.

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 20 June 2017 16:20 (eight years ago)

yeah, I'm a perfect example! already a fan, ready to hear more, missed it completely

sleeve, Tuesday, 20 June 2017 16:22 (eight years ago)

Kim Deal is my favorite '90s musician, i think everything she touched that decade is gold and persona-wise she is just really appealing and admirable imo.

nomar, Tuesday, 20 June 2017 16:23 (eight years ago)

It's always a pleasure to listen to Kim Deal sing.
It's never a pleasure to listen to Kim Gordon sing.

Deal, then.

The Anti-Climax Blues Band (Turrican), Tuesday, 20 June 2017 16:26 (eight years ago)

another point of comparison:
Amps and Free Kitten full-lengths both released 1995 around the same time, I got both, guess which one I held onto

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 20 June 2017 16:37 (eight years ago)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9FqhOQLD3t0

i just went through ohio and played a show in my hometown and this very short gbv cover warms my heart because it is so ohio and so of its time
and her voice, always

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Tuesday, 20 June 2017 16:45 (eight years ago)

haha thx for that, never seen it before

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 20 June 2017 16:49 (eight years ago)

i still think deal and pollard should've made at least four albums together (i guess they had a falling out?)
http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_llrzurjzPR1qcziuco1_1280.jpg

tylerw, Tuesday, 20 June 2017 16:52 (eight years ago)

breeders played it when i saw them at pfork 2013
i remember freaking out (lol)

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Tuesday, 20 June 2017 16:52 (eight years ago)

^ That picture could not be any more '90s.

The Anti-Climax Blues Band (Turrican), Tuesday, 20 June 2017 17:01 (eight years ago)

could prob get a podcast episode out of it

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 20 June 2017 17:02 (eight years ago)

I love the Breeders' version of Gloomtown. I remember first hearing it in Live in Stockholm

the underground is pass-agg (Drugs A. Money), Tuesday, 20 June 2017 18:52 (eight years ago)

Fwiw I spoke to a woman in NYC in 2002 who claimed she interviewed Kim D backstage at a gig and she was openly smoking heroin but I think she went to rehab for alcoholism rather than heroin and that was before the Pixies reformed so suggestion she did the reformation to support her habit doesn't ring true. She admits to taking lots of drugs in the late 90s. Anyway both these women are icons to me and this thread kinda sucks but here I am adding to it so fuck me I guess.

Colonel Poo, Tuesday, 20 June 2017 22:49 (eight years ago)

I assume she did the reunion for the money just like every band does

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 20 June 2017 22:52 (eight years ago)

Pretty nice Kim Deal & Robert Pollard collab that flew under the radar:

Kim (& the OG Breeders) is/are still making great music as of 2014:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kb46UMdmGqY

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Tuesday, 20 June 2017 23:47 (eight years ago)

Freedom Cruise posted a couple posts up was:

Robert Pollard - guitar & vocals
Tobin Sprout - guitar
Jim Pollard - guitar
Jim Greer - bass
Kim Deal - guitar & backing vocals
Kelly Deal - drums & backing vocals

recorded circa Amps - Pacer & GBV - Alien Lanes

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Tuesday, 20 June 2017 23:52 (eight years ago)

eight months pass...

So glad Elijah Wood and you guys repped for Amps - Pacer. What a wonderful album I could have easily missed. Pollard only co-written a track but I kept imagining he had some bigger role because a bunch of songs sound a bit Pollardy to me.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Friday, 16 March 2018 23:28 (seven years ago)

I love that 90s picture of Kim + Pollard + whoever those other people are. That guy at the end of the table was he in Pavement? Probably

Colonel Poo, Saturday, 17 March 2018 00:09 (seven years ago)

Yeah that looks like Mark Ibold

startled macropod (MatthewK), Saturday, 17 March 2018 03:19 (seven years ago)

Isn't Kim there with former rock journalist/former Mr. Kim Deal/former GBV member Jim Greer?

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 17 March 2018 04:22 (seven years ago)

Lol yeah... Ibold looks nothing like him.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Saturday, 17 March 2018 05:39 (seven years ago)
