i take that back.
i have the Nino Ferrer on vinyl, and luckily found this one on Limewire, but no others. the Henri Texier a friend ripped me from his vinyl and the West African Cosmos is from a comp. but the rest still stands.

the rest of the Pugh album is amazing. the first track is on Cherrystone's Rocks comp and was sampled by DJ Shadow. you can hear it on the http://aquariusrecords.org/ site

Question: is there any other Aisha Kandisha's Jarring Effects stuff (or any stuff on their Barbity label) that's any good? I've had their first album for like seven years, but I've never bought their second one (Bill Laswell, ick) and I'm curious if they've done anything else worthwhile.

"i'm gonna have to go ahead and say they haven't done anything else worthwhile."
Wrong! I just picked up Ahlam's Revolt Against Reason (which actually gets a passing mention in the Unterberger book). It's fantastic like El Buya Part II. There is one nearly 10 minute song which is stunningly beautiful with little cuts and stop starts. Weird samples all over the place too. Asian Dub Foundation wishes they were this good.
― Alex in SF, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 19:37 (seventeen years ago)
wait, what does Ahlam have to do with Aisha?
i'm listening to a clip. sounds kinda interesting. i've been wanting to get into rai for a long time now. http://ps1.el.net/media/archive/mp3/sbmson_ahlam_revoltagainstreason.mp3
― jaxon, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 20:09 (seventeen years ago)
i don't think they're the same group. think both put out records on the same label (http://www.maroc.net/barraka/) and were both later ruined by Laswell.
btw, i think that mp3 i linked to above is actually the whole album on one file?
― jaxon, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 20:18 (seventeen years ago)
They both released stuff on Barbarity records (Swiss label.) The record is engineered by Fido K (who is in AKJE) and they may share members as well.
― Alex in SF, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 20:43 (seventeen years ago)
Seriously this record is almost as good as El Buya. If all rai sounded like this I would be a huge fan (unfortunately noodle-y 80s keyboard refrains kind of ruin a lot of it.)
― Alex in SF, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 20:45 (seventeen years ago)
That said I don't think this is "technically" rai anyway, but some crazy rai-gnawa-beat-dub fusion thing which probably no one in Morocco even likes but is tailor made for genre interlopers haha.
― Alex in SF, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 20:46 (seventeen years ago)
BUT what is totally and completely rai is another record on Barbarity called Oujda-Casablanca Introspections Vol. 1. Raw sounding stuff more in the vein of Hada Raykoum than most of the other lates 80s-early 90s stuff I've heard.

― Alex in SF, Wednesday, 23 January 2008 18:25 (seventeen years ago)
Or is this one of the fancy mystery comps Sub Freq-stylee haha!
― Alex in SF, Wednesday, 23 January 2008 18:36 (seventeen years ago)
Speaking of which the three non-comp albums they released last year are the best thing that label has done. Yay for attribution!
― Alex in SF, Wednesday, 23 January 2008 18:37 (seventeen years ago)

can't believe i missed this first time 'round. any chance of a re-up?
― r1o natsume, Wednesday, 23 January 2008 18:58 (seventeen years ago)
i don't have any of these mp3s on my computer (hopefully they're all on a harddrive somewhere), but the i do upload tons of weirdo world tracks to my site http://www.robotsinheat.com/. i'd say maybe 20-30% are non-anglo. lotsa german, french, african, italian, japanese, etc.
I'll try to compile a bunch of the best and upload them in the near future.
― jaxon, Wednesday, 23 January 2008 20:19 (seventeen years ago)
