the albums, i mean.

the last word in technical thrash metal ("holy wars" / "five magics" / "polaris") burdened by some middle-third filler vs super-catchy almost-hard-rock album with no filler?

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 01:26 (twenty years ago)

Rust in Peace! Countdown is cold and perfectly executed but RiP is that raw, hot shit (with less filler I think!).

I could stand never to hear Symphony of Destruction or Sweating Bullets again, but Polaris came on the college radio station when I was driving home at 3 a.m. recently and I sat transfixed in the driveway.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 01:30 (twenty years ago)

I just watched a zombie movie with a Megadeth joke in it tonight, so I was thinking about this.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 01:30 (twenty years ago)

the thing abt countdown that was so amazing though was how megadeth managed to keep from diluting the vibe, even though they chopped song lengths in half and embraced accessibility. so many awesome tracks i can remember in their entirety, even though i haven't listened to the album since probably 1997 or something ("skin of my teeth" / "high speed dirt" / "psychotron"/ "captive honour" etc)

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 01:34 (twenty years ago)

I feel the same way about RiP's memorability, but that's probably because I got that cassette first and wore it out before hearing CtE.

Mostly what I remember about CtE were stories about how they measured every pitch bend against a tuner to make sure it was perfect and took weeks to get the drum sound.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 01:47 (twenty years ago)

I'll go with CTE

Yet neither can stand up to "The System Has Failed". The songs are extremely well written. Mustaine's voice is actually very melodic on their latest disc....at least as melodic as possible for him. He sings, not growls or barks. He should be extremely proud of how good he sounds on this and how far he has come as a musician.
Chris Poland rips loose with some intelligent jazz fusion influenced solos and Mustaine's guitar soloing compliments the songs perfectly.
And the biggest improvement over any previous Megadeth release is the rhythm section. The bass actually provides bottom and grooves in a vein that was never before evident on a Megadeth disc.
The drumming is just awe-inspiring. This drummer learned the songs, devised his parts and recorded the tracks in only three days. That's a world class pro at work there. And the playing is just so friggin' exact, so friggin' precise, and again the songs groove in a way that Megadeth never has before.
It is rare when a band can return with such a solid work to put out as product for the public. This disc is definitely one of those rare occasions. Best disc of 2004, in my opinion.

bahtology, Wednesday, 20 July 2005 02:53 (twenty years ago)

i say rust in peace.

the last word in technical thrash metal

dunno about that. deathrow, coroner, hellwitch, atheist, sadus, hexx, forbidden, watchtower, c'mon...

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 02:59 (twenty years ago)

Rust In Peace definitely. No filler, better sequencing, better riffs, more intense vibe. Best Megadeth album by far. I was and still am very disappointed with CTE, the only really good track is "Symphony Of Destruction", everything else is so stale and...weak. Everything that this album attempted to do (mainly, shorter & catchier songs) they perfected a year later in the soundtrack exclusive track "Angry Again".

Siegbran (eofor), Thursday, 21 July 2005 18:09 (twenty years ago)

one year passes...
rust in peace has no filler at all

thrash metal at its finest i would suggest.

countdown is also very good, particularly the title track, 'architecture of aggression', 'this was my life', and 'ashes in your mouth'

Charlie Howard, Friday, 18 May 2007 15:05 (eighteen years ago)

This isn't even close. "Rust" by mile.

Bill Magill, Friday, 18 May 2007 15:08 (eighteen years ago)

Chris Poland rips loose with some intelligent jazz fusion influenced solos

UGH

moonship journey to baja, Friday, 18 May 2007 15:21 (eighteen years ago)

i've been digging on "poison was the cure" lately

moonship journey to baja, Friday, 18 May 2007 15:23 (eighteen years ago)

i don't think i've ever even heard countdown to extinction. i like rust in peace. as i write this i am listening to *so far, so good...so what!*

scott seward, Friday, 18 May 2007 15:34 (eighteen years ago)

^^ my least favorite megadeth album.

what's good on that one?

moonship journey to baja, Friday, 18 May 2007 15:35 (eighteen years ago)

other than "502"

moonship journey to baja, Friday, 18 May 2007 15:35 (eighteen years ago)

OK i'm leaving out anything after CtE in that assessment.

moonship journey to baja, Friday, 18 May 2007 15:36 (eighteen years ago)

good from 'so far, so good...':

'in my darkest hour'
'mary jane'
'hook in mouth'

and 'set the world afire' is ok

the other tracks range from lacklustre to pretty embarassing as far as i'm concerned

Charlie Howard, Friday, 18 May 2007 15:54 (eighteen years ago)

I loved 'Rust in Peace' but when 'So Far' came out but that "Anarchy in the U.K." cover was so goddam embarassing i never wanted to have anything to do with them again.

I caught the Heaven and Hell show a couple weeks back (who were fucking godhead) but didn't bother to arrive in time for Megadeth

Stormy Davis, Friday, 18 May 2007 15:58 (eighteen years ago)

haha. and who the fuck were jeff young and chuck behler? i mean, seriously

Charlie Howard, Friday, 18 May 2007 16:00 (eighteen years ago)

Rust in Peace came out after So Far So Good.....

Bill Magill, Friday, 18 May 2007 16:14 (eighteen years ago)

oops, I meant 'PEace Sells'. see, i told ya I stopped paying attention!

Stormy Davis, Friday, 18 May 2007 16:14 (eighteen years ago)

HEEEEY, THIS WAS MY LIFE

listening to countdown for the first time in ages and i'm lovin' it. sooo many riffs you can groove to. classic track after classic track. i'm even digging 'psychotron' which always used to bug me.

rust still wins, simply by virtue of being my favourite thrash record.

Charlie Howard, Friday, 18 May 2007 16:27 (eighteen years ago)

Rust in Peace all the way. The hooks are tight as fuck, and some are catchy enough to be almost pop.

chap, Friday, 18 May 2007 16:44 (eighteen years ago)

RiP, all the way. but i still gotta special place for 'Peace Sells, Who's Buying?' AND 'Killing Is My Business..."
oh, to be 13/14 and still under the impression that metal would take this planet by storm...

edde, Friday, 18 May 2007 16:55 (eighteen years ago)

?!?

metal DID take the planet by storm

moonship journey to baja, Friday, 18 May 2007 17:05 (eighteen years ago)

Wasn't RiP after Peace Sells too?

Jordan, Friday, 18 May 2007 17:19 (eighteen years ago)

(it was)

Holy shit, I forgot that Megadeth recorded tracks with Vinnie Colaiuta. I'd kind of like to hear that.

Jordan, Friday, 18 May 2007 17:33 (eighteen years ago)

"Holy Wars" is the best song Megadeth ever wrote. And "Polaris" is in the top three, top five.

CtE is the album that made me stop listening to Megadeth.

pgwp, Friday, 18 May 2007 21:53 (eighteen years ago)

polaris has some pretty lame lyrics though

moonship journey to baja, Friday, 18 May 2007 22:26 (eighteen years ago)

DISCHARGE MY!!! PAYLOAD!!!!

moonship journey to baja, Friday, 18 May 2007 22:28 (eighteen years ago)

come on, mustaine was ahead of the game when it came to nuclear warfare!!!!

Charlie Howard, Saturday, 19 May 2007 04:59 (eighteen years ago)

oh, to be 13/14 and still under the impression that metal would take this planet by storm...

Didn't you watch Eurovision?

Siegbran, Saturday, 19 May 2007 12:07 (eighteen years ago)

haha those sneering heavy metal cellists to kick off the voting were amazing.. also moldova had some kind of operatic metal thing goin on

Tracer Hand, Saturday, 19 May 2007 12:23 (eighteen years ago)

i think "rust in peace" was remastered?? does anybody have any opinions on the differences, if there are any?

Tracer Hand, Saturday, 19 May 2007 12:24 (eighteen years ago)

I don't know, but thePeace Sells remaster sounds really good.

Reatards Unite, Saturday, 19 May 2007 15:43 (eighteen years ago)

"Holy Wars" is the best song Megadeth ever wrote. And "Polaris" is in the top three, top five.

Absolutely, and Tornado of Souls is up there too.

chap, Saturday, 19 May 2007 15:47 (eighteen years ago)

'take no prisoners' is an awesome live song. and awesome on disc for that matter.

'five magics' is pretty damn blissful

Charlie Howard, Sunday, 20 May 2007 14:33 (eighteen years ago)

i think they remaster all the 80's MD, w/ bonus tracks no less!

edde, Sunday, 20 May 2007 15:00 (eighteen years ago)

i think "rust in peace" was remastered?? does anybody have any opinions on the differences, if there are any?

actually, buyer beware--parts of Rust in Peace were actually *re-recorded* when it was remastered

Johnny Hotcox, Sunday, 20 May 2007 15:15 (eighteen years ago)

listening just now, the original so far, so good... has terrible production

what the hell went wrong there?

Charlie Howard, Monday, 21 May 2007 13:52 (eighteen years ago)

They're still great in concert. I saw them Saturday.

Bill Magill, Monday, 21 May 2007 14:15 (eighteen years ago)

did he rerecord the bass parts or am i confusing megadeth with mayhem?

moonship journey to baja, Monday, 21 May 2007 15:09 (eighteen years ago)

what the hell went wrong there?

If I recall correctly, the budget ran out before the final mix so the band did it themselves.

Siegbran, Monday, 21 May 2007 21:14 (eighteen years ago)

Was Polairs some kind of response to Metallica's Orion?

calstars, Monday, 21 May 2007 21:51 (eighteen years ago)

not really. '...polaris' was about nuclear war. i'm not even sure what 'orion' was about, given the lack of lyrics.

Charlie Howard, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 12:29 (eighteen years ago)

So Far, so Good... is actually my favorite Megadeth album, and I love Megadeth a lot. I was never bothered by the production or the cover, because the rest of the songs were so damn good. "Holy Wars" is one of my least favorite Megadeth songs, though. Never quite clicked for me.

Jeff Treppel, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 01:07 (eighteen years ago)

doesnt mustaine have writing credit on orion?

chaki, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 01:44 (eighteen years ago)

jeff treppel i think you might be bizarro-me.

Rust in Peace is the best Megadeth album by a ludicrous margin.

the joke should be over once the kid is eaten. (chap), Thursday, 13 August 2015 14:15 (ten years ago)

RiP = MoP
CtD = AJFA

CtE = The Black Album surely.

I just noticed that the chains on the side of the head of the dude look kind of like the curly hair style that some Jewish men have. Surely this is just coincidence?

calstars, Friday, 14 August 2015 02:31 (ten years ago)

i'm always surprised by how "Wacky" megadeth vocals are... reminds me of like, nomeansno

Why does the remaster of Rust In Peace say "remixed and remastered" so prominently? How different is the mix?

Robert Adam Gilmour, Thursday, 3 September 2015 19:10 (ten years ago)

very. it's super punchy

insufficiently familiar with xgau's work to comment intelligently (BradNelson), Thursday, 3 September 2015 19:13 (ten years ago)

it sort of makes it sound like a clean and precise modern metal record but it kinda sucks the air from the room imo

insufficiently familiar with xgau's work to comment intelligently (BradNelson), Thursday, 3 September 2015 19:14 (ten years ago)

Is it significantly worse off for that?

Robert Adam Gilmour, Thursday, 3 September 2015 19:22 (ten years ago)

three years pass...

Whatever the case may be, I listened to this version and liked it a lot. Even the bonus track "My Creation" is amazing. He's a much better singer than I expected too.

Surprised Mustaine hasn't been on Joe Rogan.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Friday, 15 February 2019 16:32 (seven years ago)

sorry it took me three years to answer this question but: no, not really, i don’t hate the megadeth remixes even though i prefer how the records originally sounded

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Friday, 15 February 2019 17:09 (seven years ago)

one year passes...

Forgotten to mention Mustaine in the notes saying he wanted to change Marty Friedman's last name because it didn't sound metal enough, then added "Oy vey!"

Robert Adam Gilmour, Sunday, 23 February 2020 16:13 (six years ago)

lol. was that on the original or a reissue?

☮️ (peace, man), Sunday, 23 February 2020 18:04 (six years ago)

Reissue

Robert Adam Gilmour, Sunday, 23 February 2020 18:47 (six years ago)

Never liked the reissue of Rust In Peace. He also changed the words to some songs, since they had to rerecord the vocals since the original vocal tracks were lost or something.
