I think Woody Allen movies have the best music in them. It just sets the mood for his humour and craziness.

Allen's def really sharp with music. Scorcese's pretty great too. Obv Leone rules everyone else though.

Well except for maybe Goblin-era Argento.

related: Most suprisingly good use of music in film

sleep (sleep), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 02:49 (twenty years ago)

It's related in a way, but this is more about the Moviemakers insted of Musicmakers.

There's a case to be made for Wes Anderson. I'd add him to the list for his use of "2000 Man" in Bottle Rocket alone.

rogermexico (rogermexico), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 02:58 (twenty years ago)

Fuck man, I really am such a sucker for John Williams..

Bryan Moore (Bryan Moore), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 03:03 (twenty years ago)

Hitchcock.

Burr (Burr), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 03:33 (twenty years ago)

Search: Howard Shore soundtracks. Thus, David Cronenberg.

Sasha (sgh), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 04:18 (twenty years ago)

Hitchcock's a good call. He knew the importance of silence, not filling every gap with music, The Birds being the prime example of that.

Otherwise, in addition to the names already mentioned, Tarantino and the Coen brothers.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 05:30 (twenty years ago)

N_RQ, Wednesday, 20 July 2005 08:23 (twenty years ago)

I like Enter the Dragon, and James Brown's soundtrack for 'Black Caesar'.

My friends are really into Badalamenti's (sp?) soundtracks for david lynch, but I don't really listen to those outside of the movie/show they were for.

Jim Jarmusch (Dead Man, Ghost Dog...)
Wes Anderson
Harmony Korine (Gummo, Kids)
Luc Besson

wes anderson
danny elfman
Lost in translation

AaronK (AaronK), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 11:41 (twenty years ago)

I know it might easily go into C/D section, but Pulp Fiction gotta be in the list. Just like Trainspotting. Soundtracks to a movie, soundtracks to a generation.

elgolfo (elgolfo), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 12:36 (twenty years ago)

Where is the love for Fassbinder?

k/l (Ken L), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 12:40 (twenty years ago)

Obvious, yes, but obviously Kubrick.

Always thought the incidental noises in 2001 made great proto-IDM.

electric derby, Wednesday, 20 July 2005 12:52 (twenty years ago)

Wes Anderson's 'needle-drop' scores (tho they're generally plaeasure) sometimes annoy me with their "Let me be your DJ" vibe (tho not nearly as much as most Tarantino).

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 12:57 (twenty years ago)

The Akira soundtrack is out-of-this-world stunning. Shame it's a one-off.

ledge (ledge), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 13:00 (twenty years ago)

Although he did try to cop some of the Tarantino vibe with his soundtracks, Guy Ritchie turned out a couple of good ones...Lock, Stock especially. James Brown and Junior Murvin? Word.

gary shipes, Wednesday, 20 July 2005 17:23 (twenty years ago)

agree on David Lynch. i don't really even like the music always, but its still absolutely perfect fit for the films. and I like some of the music sometimes.

Fellini with Nina Rota, Juliet of the Spirits especially. (Pretty much anything with Nina Rota, really. Going to his opera, The Italian Straw Hat tonight. Excited)
