(The full fest pass is pretty heavily priced, me thinks, but you can opt for single day covers. Then again, I don't know how cheap or not cheap NO FUN fest in NYC was in comparison):

I'm soon on the way to the Baltic tonight to see Steve Stapleton behind the tables at least, as I just got back into town.

Steven sported a very prominent Snoop Dogg t-shirt, but he didn't play any mainstream hip-hop that many were jokingly expecting. (About half the audience were taking photos constantly, so there will be pics coming shortly of the man and his rep'ing for Snoop.). He did, however, do pretty much what sounded like a rough, disjunct NWW-and-friends overview chopped and screwed NWW style... from the very goofy to the very bowel-churning in one swoop... It was an excellent set, enough such that it might as well have been a performance, even though I guess it was downplayed to lower expectations(?)
Apparently Caroliner did one of their best shows ever last night, a friend told me tonight.. it was their most "rock" show ever. (though it wasn't excellent just because it was more rock, he qualified..) Anyway, a Caroliner related band, Spider Compass Good Crime Band played before Stapleton's set, and they did a two synth assault, dressed in these gigantic mutated vulture costumes with multiple eyeballs. The music was some sort of bossanova'ed Teletubbies funeral music with lots of squelches and blasts of synth noise, stuttering, and effects over it. The video backdrop and the constant nodding of the giant multi-eyeballed turkey vulture heads gave the show a lot of momentum. Sometimes the right costume makes a difference.
MAJOR props to the video people.. there was one cut-up of this really insane blond televangelist woman, where all of her preaching was edited out, except for the gasps of breath and her "ssss" sounds. I hadn't busted a gut so badly in a loong time.
Anyway, I got to meet ILXer Rock Hardy (visiting here from Mississippi) who also attended the show (yay William!), mingle a bit, and introduce him to the spectacle of a lot of goth dirt-hippies robotically doing the death disco to Stapleton's (very excellent) DJ set.. an interesting way to ring in Monday morning..

Spider Compass Good Crime Band were fantastic. all their cds i've heard - 5x and 1x 7" - are of the genius variety. noise organs do me right.
Herb Diamonte..... ehn.
Tom Recchion brought a film he made in 1978 and show'd it to an appreciative audience.
Broken Human Machine opened the night and were ambient drone noise bliss. excellent.
the JIRCs are the ones behind the vids and they freakin' ruled!
Caroliner's set was the best i've ever seen - 7x now - totally tight and the songs were hallucinations of melody and form. the new costumes were their best yet, too. very abstract. they will be up again next year with a whole new set and costumes, saidest they.
Hans Grusel's Krankenkabinet was electronic Black Forest Dada + Vaudeville. ended their set with a rendition of Me and My Shadow sung by a tree-stump costumed character as one of the two cukoo-clock-headed characters, the girl in the fraulein dress, did a tap-dance.
Irr.App.(ext.) was the most subtle of reality disruption. absurd nymphs in the forest of surreal. bowing guitars, tinging bells, whirring gears. they broke into pronounced bird call vocals as they marched around the audience. a heavy doom riff played on distorted ran through a portion of the set. at the end of the set, the performers took off their masks and many in audience were pleasantly surprised to find Steven Stapleton as a member of Irr.App.(ext.)
Tarantism tore the roof with a very very subtle nod to Nautical Almanac.
Climax Golden Twins drove in throbbing noise. nice.
Loachfillet was a standout with actual tape loops wrapped around wires and broken electronics.
Aaron Dilloway tore a hole in the fabric of Saturday night- a complete standout! volume dealer extraordinaire!
Emil Beaulieau stole the entire pfest. sweaty, jumping and running, underwear no shirt, bald, paunchy and white. amazing!
Portland Bike Ensemble played bikes with contact mics and streetsweeper bristles. why didn't i ever think of that?
Metalux.... so disaffected and dragging, absolute stars!!
Anti-Ear was a real crowd-pleaser. it's the good looks and facial noise. ENCORE!
so many other amazing moments, hard to keep track of it all.
Sunday afternoon's admission came with FREE home-made guinness pancakes!!!!
