Fat Freddy Fingers, Friday, 8 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Are you some kind of hater? Have you been drinking hatorade?

I think we've talked enough about Fred Durst maybe (though dont take my word for it) but what about that cheeky scamp Kid Rock?

Tom, Friday, 8 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

both need to be removed from the radio.

skinflute, Friday, 8 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually, I'm down with Kid Rock. I interviewed him a while ago and I asked him about doing "Drinkin' Wine Spee-Dee-O-Dee" for the Sun Tribute. He said that he hoped that his fans would hear his song and seek out the original, that all he wanted to do was have fun and be a conduit to better music from the past - to try to inform his listeners while letting them have fun. He's smart, a good businessman and as unpretentious as someone can be. There are some very good qualities in that man.

Oh, but I hate his music.

Yancey, Friday, 8 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm kind of letting up on the Durst hate. At this point I'd rather hear his dopey whining on the radio than Nelly Furtaco or Alicia Keys.

Well, Mr. Rock is making the hip! hop! more palatable to an audience that I'm pretty sure would have nothing to do w/ the stuff. Sure, you've Rage & these other Johnny-come-latelies with their spoken-word patois, but none of these rap/rock groups are so willing to truly embrace the ROCK! (that is, the effects-free rock, the angst-free rock) as much as the Kid! Rock!

However, the Rock's skillz on the mic make the ILM Battle Thread read like a freestyle throwdown between Busta Rhymes & Eminem. (As if you couldn't figure that out yourselves.)

Should Fred Durst and Kid Rock be shot?

Yes. Repeatedly. With Bazookas.

Lord Custos, Friday, 8 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

He's smart, a good businessman...

I've heard this said about Durst as well as if it is praise. I don't want my rock stars to be good businessmen, they can employ people for things like that. Being a good businessman just means cynically tailoring your music to what the kids want to buy.

Someone should stop them somehow.

As for Kid Rock being unpretentious. . . what the hell?!? Who ever thought this guy had any pretentions at all? He's practically subhuman for chrissake! He can barely walk upright! Exclamation point!

He's practically subhuman for chrissake! He can barely walk upright! Exclamation point!

Why, because he didn't abandon/fesses up to his Detroit-area white-trash roots? I guess he should have fucked off to L.A. with Pam rather than the other way around.

scott p., Friday, 8 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

eh, sorry Alex, that reads a bit more harsh than is necessary.

scott p., Friday, 8 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think somebody threw a pie at Mr. Durst, and isn't that ultimately more wounding than a shotgun blast to the face? No rock'n'roll martyrdom when you're smothered in coconut-creme. I think the humiliating career decline and desperate, pathetic attemtpts to remain in the spotlight while still maintaining a shred of dignity (i.e. Hollywood Squares appearances) will ultimately bring them down, as a vine slowly but surely crumbles a brick wall. Can't we talk about Shakira now or something?

Andy, Friday, 8 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Is Kid Rock even famous anymore? I think he's pretty talented -- he just should stop rapping and go full on southern boogie.

Kris, Friday, 8 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think the Kid should have stayed in Afghanistan and searched for Mullah Omar.

remy, Friday, 8 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually, Kid Rock doesn't have white trash roots... he grew up in a well-to-do family in suburban Detroit. Thus the white trash schtick is totally put-on and he's pretentious as all hell.

I'm not condemning pretension, but let's not give credit where credit is not due.

Hi Yancey.

charlie va, Friday, 8 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Romeo, Mich. is well-to-do?? It's in the sticks.

(why, oh why, am I sticking up for this guy?)

scott p., Friday, 8 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't know if the *town* is well-to-do, but his family was. This matter is discussed at length in an Alternative Press cover story from a couple years ago. Kid Rock passes off his trailer-trash schtick as, you know, like, a metaphor for how life can be really hard for everyone, rich or not. Inexcusable.

And now, I've said too much.

charlie va, Friday, 8 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't know that getting into a huge class argument about Kid Rock is really worth it, but let's try. ;) That these two represent their piggish impulses as being laudable, in Durst's case worthy enough to be marketed around (how much mileage did this band get from their awful Woodstock display). They are both celebrating crassness (and not in the Crass way) and if they aspire to be anything it is more and more grotesque. Where they are actually from at this point is insignificant, if they were truly like this before becoming famous (and I'm dubious) they've gone even farther down the road of tastlessness/sexism/thuggishness in their attempts to be "shocking" (Durst) and "real" (Kid Rock). Not laudable. Not pretentious either, as far as I can tell. Simply sickening.

I like the early pictures of Kid Rock where he looks like a member of Jesus Jones.

Nicole, Friday, 8 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

ten years pass...

no, because murder is ethically wrong except in extreme circumstances, like when one's life is in direct jeopardy.

There was a point, ten years ago, when people were still asking if Kid Rock was even famous anymore. ;_;
