i know that personal autobiography and authenticity is a (cannonical) non starter here
sonically it is a great pop song, and its remixes as only served it.
gwen stefanis voice is explicit here, and thats interesting--considering the qaulity of her voice.

its a high school anthem, but pop is a cult of youth
is there something wrong w. a 40 yr old wife singing said high school anthems
is there a femminist point here, that the only voices of age we here on the radio are those passing as teenagers?

if there is, does this require discussing authentic voice--what is the proper voice for a woman near 40.
why did madonnas albums tank and LAMB doing so well--is it because madonna is growing older lyrically, is it because she has been so public for so long ?
stefani as a singular performer is realtively new, can we extrapolate her work w. no doubt w. this ?

does this have anything to do with the 80s revival ?
more shocking then the racism of her japanese chic is its delibrate lack of fashion--isnt hurkaki girls so 1994?
who the fuck pays attention to the lyrics these days?

can we (by me i mean a grad student with too much time on his/her hands) do an analysis of the importance of bananas as signifer vis a vis the MIA song, also worked (with/by) diplo that featured the same signifers so heavily.

how problematic is the video in these terms?

What do you think?

OLD SPICE® CHEMTRAILS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (ex machina), Thursday, 21 July 2005 02:44 (twenty years ago)

just doing my fact checking due diligence before this discussion gets started:

gwen is 35, and was at most 34 when she recorded "hollaback girl." which is not quite the same thing as 40.

and the album madonna released the year she turned 40 did anything but tank. it was, commercially and critically speaking, a ray of light.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Thursday, 21 July 2005 02:45 (twenty years ago)

is there a femminist point here, that the only voices of age we here on the radio are those passing as teenagers?

What does that have to do with feminism?

why did madonnas albums tank and LAMB doing so well--is it because madonna is growing older lyrically, is it because she has been so public for so long ?

No, it's because Madonna's last three albums fucking SUCKED.

more shocking then the racism of her japanese chic is its delibrate lack of fashion--isnt hurkaki girls so 1994?

What? "the racism of her japanese chic"?

is there a femminist point here, that the only voices of age we here on the radio are those passing as teenagers?

What does that have to do with feminism?

What Anthony said. I think that he's referring to the idea that women are acceptable as childlike voices, without their own opinions, etc etc. I would say that the idea that older/mature womens voices are excluded leads to the 'emasculation' women but that wouldn't really fit. (; Someone needs to give me a better word here. IE childlike female voices => not strong, not worth taking seriously, so if those are the only representations of women that you see, you're (popular culture is) discriminating against women.

I think that this a commen idea even within feminism, at college a lot of women who considered themselves feminist were suspicious of looking too girlish/wearing makeup or heels or skirts- this comes, I think, out of the 1970s version of feminism, and is kind of interesting from a gender identity point of view. If your call yourself a feminist and dress like a girl, are you reclaiming that role or fooling yourself? For another example besides Gwen Stefani, see Courtney Love and babydoll dresses in 1994ish, and the debate surrounding that.

lyra (lyra), Thursday, 21 July 2005 02:57 (twenty years ago)

I spent a weekend vacation with my sister-in-law and her friend constantly saying "THIS SHIT IS BANANAS...B-A-N-A-N-A-S."

Yes, it made me want to eat a bullet.

On the other hand, my two-year-old LOVES the song, and when we are in the car she says "Dada! Pay dat hawback grr song!"

Yes, it's cute as all hell.

Justin, Thursday, 21 July 2005 04:15 (twenty years ago)

this song is great.

what do you mean, anthony, when you say her voice is "explicit"?

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Thursday, 21 July 2005 05:17 (twenty years ago)

I saw Tanya Tucker on the weekend and I thought about Anthony. I thought, a) I bet he would "enjoy" being here (i.e., enjoy seeing Tanya Tucker, maybe not so much being among 18,000 drunk ass weekend cowboys, and 25 real cowboys) b) what would Anthony have to say about her weird sexuality, singing dirty songs at age 46 that she used to sing when she was 15. Which is dirtier? And 46 isn't really that old, but she sort of looks older, but in a way that older people look younger. Like she looks like a 55-year-old who looks 45 might.

HukL, Thursday, 21 July 2005 05:25 (twenty years ago)

i don't see why 45 year olds shouldn't or wouldn't be expected to sing dirty songs.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Thursday, 21 July 2005 05:27 (twenty years ago)

Some of the dudes I was talking to later on thought it was skanky of her, and were really running her down (one of them claimed to know a guy who knew a guy who knew five guys), despite the fact that she had absolutely fucking killed.
And one of these dudes was like, late 30s. Women over 40 seem to become targets for, I don't know, mockery for being sexualized.
And holy shit, I just realized, Tanya Tucker is younger than Lucinda Williams! And also better, but that's beside the point.

why is it a "high school anthem"? (because it sounds like high school for some reason, because it's "about" high school, because it is played in high schools?)

how is her "japanese chic" "racist"?

Well, it's not really a contrivance on Gwen's part; it's not like she has another register and only dips into the boop-y one when she wants to hit a demographic ...

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Thursday, 21 July 2005 14:40 (twenty years ago)

old actresses/singers/etc. passing themselves off as younger shocker!

this somewhat reminds me of a fellow college radio dj coming up to me at a party, wearing a very concerned expression, and asking me if i'd ever noticed how so many of the singers who are popular are also very attractive--and did this bother me? i wonder what that dude is up to these days and if this still upsets him.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 21 July 2005 14:47 (twenty years ago)

I haven't seen the actual movie but this could be quite a clever reference to the movie "Bring It On". "Bring It On" is a cheerleader flick starring Kirsten Dunst where a group of white cheerleaders compete with a group of black cheerleaders, going as far as stealing a cheer from the black girls. A friend pointed out to me that the cheer they steal actually goes something like "bananas, b-a-n-a-n-a-s". Which of course would make the song a play on Gwen "stealing" black music and so on.

can anybody confirm if this is really the case?

stefani's solo career was so odd - like, LAMB was basically packed with such a huge range of hits (loved "hollaback girl" at the time, inevitably it's the one that i basically never revisit), then the follow-up was just such a damp squib, lonely goatherd samples notwithstanding, and then...nothing since. it's like she invested all her energy into making one great pop album, tossed out the offcuts as a follow-up, then didn't care any more
