Nearly everything I've heard (mostly The Stems) is classic, but I don't own anything. I'm thinking of getting the Popsided Guitar anthology but in general I prefer to get original LPs if I can, so - where to start? And what, if anything, to avoid?

everything the someloves did was pretty great - their sole album is probably one of the all-time best powerpop albums IMO.

the orange humble band have their similarly good moments but don't hit as many heights.

Sad Girl was a great single, about '88 or so. Try redeye.com.au (I think)

the stems "at first sight... violets are blue" is essential (says the hypocrite who doesn't own it)

Ouch, redeye want $50 for the Someloves album - think I'll wait for the reissue. There's a 12" mini-LP of theirs I might pick up after work (if it's still there) - any good? (Sorry, I can't remember the name now.)

a stems mini lp? that would be 'the great rosebud hoax'

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Thursday, 21 July 2005 03:35 (twenty years ago)

yes wait for the someloves reissue. that album is certainly in need of a remaster.

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Thursday, 21 July 2005 03:35 (twenty years ago)

hmm shame that don bartley did the remaster though. unless half a cow is particularly going for the triple j market

Need a burn of "At first sight...", wombat?

SoHoLa (SoHoLa), Thursday, 21 July 2005 03:43 (twenty years ago)

No it was a Someloves mini LP. From memory it was a six-tracker, produced by Mitch Easter.

SoHoLa - that'd be great. My gmail is elwombatX@gmail.com - ta!

ah yes that's the "sunshine's glove" ep, four tracks not included on the album. forgot about that.

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Thursday, 21 July 2005 03:52 (twenty years ago)

Yep, that sounds like the one. NOBODY GO AND BUY IT BEFORE I FINISH WORK PLEASE.

wombatX (wombatX), Thursday, 21 July 2005 03:57 (twenty years ago)

i think there may have been a cd version of it too, but i've never personally seen a copy

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Thursday, 21 July 2005 04:05 (twenty years ago)

i've not really heard any of dom mariani's solo stuff or much in the way of DM3. i have no doubt it's entirely competent perth powerpop

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Thursday, 21 July 2005 04:06 (twenty years ago)

the Someloves' complete discography compilation is due out in just a month or three I think, shouldn't be too much stress of a wait.

Picked up the EP and absolutely love it. Really looking forward to the album reissue now.

Also, digging around in my 7"s found I had At First Sight / The Grooviest Girl in Town which I seem to remember buying in Savers a while back - will give it a spin this evening.

I think the early Stems stuff (i.e. "She's A Monster"/"Make You Mine" and "Tears Me in Two"/"Can't Resist" plus the Love Will Grow e.p) is classic. Didn't like "At First Sight" so much and don't know the someloves beyond the first single.

I think the Buds CD (which is OOP, but ain't so hard to find?) compiles the above nicely.
