Mystery Siouxsie Song...

Just wondering if in your collective musical omniscience you could help me figure this out...

I'm trying to find a Siouxsie and the Banshees (or possibly Creatures?) song that is on an old tape I made from the radio in high school (I was just back home in America for the first time in a long time, driving around in my Dad's car with no CD player, so I hauled out the cassette box).

It was (embarrassingly enough) recorded from one of those "Labor Day Greatest KROQ Songs of All Time" nostalgia fests, and had a whole block of Siouxsie (with no song IDs, of course), and there was one song that I really would like to find... (and stupidly I did not bring the tape back with me to HK)

It kind of sounds like "Kiss Them For Me" (or maybe from same era), with same upbeat faux-ethnic-ness, faster tempo, genuinely (uncharacteristically) happy undertone, almost a Cars-like bubbly excitement, and the lyrics had something to do with water and/or waterfalls and/or water buffalo... perhaps something about India or some South(east) Asian Orientalism thrown in there? I've already been searching lyric databases, and so far these songs (which share similar lyrics) are NOT the one I'm looking for: Cities of Dust, Ornaments of Gold, Swimming Horses, Cascade, Silver Waterfalls...

Any other ideas would be most welcome. Please save me from posting on some Middle-Aged Goths messageboard.
Thank you--
shc

Sounds vaguely like "Gecko" by the Creatures, which is one of Siouxsie's more "upbeat" songs, with a weird faux-ethnic percussion thing - an almost Caribbean melody played on what sounds like a steel drum. It was never a single, but was easily the most popular tune from the "Feast" album, aside from maybe "Miss The Girl."

The chorus went:
"Panoramic banana / a passionfruit samba / pale skin is itching / a tropical fever"
with "Gecko" chanted on another vocal track.

Might it be "Song from the Edge of the World" (which discusses diving for pearls). Criminally unavailable on compact disc in its single form.

Gecko is great but I doubt KROQ would play it. How about 'Stargazer'?

i think...

"festival of colours" by the creatures...

"clutching handfuls of the powder, throw it everywhere, chanting out their many names, kick it to the wind... (hawaiian verse)
across the seas from india... festival of colours..."

it is from the hawaii inspired feast record... some great shit on that record... miss the girl, gecko, ice house, flesh, etc...

hope this is right samantha. it is on the bestiary of the creatures comp as well.

Could it be "Dazzle"?

"The stars that shine and the stars that shrink
in the face of stagnation
the water runs before your eyes"

It's very upbeat and has a violin intro that's more classical than oriental, but maybe...

So? Any progress?

Baaderonixx cancels each other out (Fabfunk), Monday, 25 July 2005 07:53 (twenty years ago)

oh, i thought it was going to email me when there were answers, sorry for not checking back until now guys--
thanks so much for all the suggestions, but these don't seem to be it so far... Definitely not "Dazzle", "Stargazer" or "Song from the Edge of the World" (though these are great), still trying to download "Gecko" and "Festival of Colours", though the lyrics posted for these don't seem to ring a bell.
another lyric has been retrieved from my murky memory, something almost exactly like:
"a bison cuts through the water..." and then something like "snuffing out his magic, he ra-e-a-HEE-ooo" (in typical last-word siouxsie incomprehensibility)... does the bison help? i'm starting to think maybe it's not siouxsie at all, but the song was played right after another siouxsie track and it sounds EXACTLY LIKE HER (and that voice is pretty unfakeable)
this is kind of ridiculous i know, but thanks for the help again...

Just wanted to add, that Gecko is AMAZING and Festival of Colours cool too, but they're not my mystery song.

Samantha Culp (samantha), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 06:52 (twenty years ago)

The rest doesn't match but "a bison cuts through the water" could be "glass hand cuts through the water"?

The Killing Jar

Down where this ugly man
Seeks his sustenance
Down in the blue, midnight flare
A glass hand cuts through the water
Scything into his twisted roots
Then from his eyes
Spring fireflies
Breathing life
Into a roaring disguise

Needles and sins, sins and needles
He's gasping for air
In the wishing well
Dust to rust, ashes to gashes
Hand around the killing jar

A soft hoodwink of shadow
The size of make-believe
Punches through his spike of rage
A glass hand cuts through the water
Snuffing out the magic fury

Then from inside
Bolt lightning cries
Swiftly crushed
The final, muffled sighs

Needles and sins, sins and needles
He's gasping for air
In the wishing well
Dust to rust, ashes to gashes
Hand around the killing jar

SHIT! i didn't even think of "killing jar"... that makes more sense then "festival of colours" as it was a single. (i lurv that video as well)

did you all hear that the siouxsie back catalogue is being re-mastered and re-released!? exciting! i am most thrilled for the kaleidoscope and kiss in the dreamhouse records being re-mastered... especially KITD. they are my two favorites especially for "green fingers". an old friend of mine and i saw them on the tinderbox tour and they did that and they began it she let go with her patented little yelp that she used to do at shows and we fucking lost it. very special indeed!

ehbenoit, Wednesday, 27 July 2005 11:59 (twenty years ago)

That's seriously the best news ever. For some unfathomable reason I slept on most of the Siouxsie albums the first time around and now I HUNGER for the re-releases.

Rejoice!

(I did have Hyaena, Tinderbox, Peepshow and Superstition and loved them all so I don't really know what I was thinking at the time.)

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 12:12 (twenty years ago)

'Green Fingers' is one of my favorite SATB song altho I wasn't too fond of Dreamhouse, which I never picked. So I guess these reissues will be a good opportunity to pick it up (as well as 'juju' which I never got around buying). I'll probably get 'Tinderbox' for it is such an amazing album, any scraps from these sessions will probably be worth gold.

Baaderonixx on a long black leash (Fabfunk), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 12:25 (twenty years ago)

I purchased Juju last year (or maybe the year before?) after realizing that was the album that "Night Shift" came from and it's OMGWTFAWESOME-O.

GOTHICK 4 LIFE!

Baaderonixx in the midnight hour (Fabfunk), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 12:58 (twenty years ago)

dreamhouse is an incredible record but it is slightly mired by poor production... muddied production on hyaena also drives me a bit mad. dreamhouse, however, houses obsession, cocoon, slowdive, melt, circle (possibly one of the most amazing tracks they ever commited to record) etc... it is just a bit tinny. it will do wonders with a remaster.

i am just hoping that when they get to the time of dreamhouse that they use some of the radio shows that they did at the time for the second disc, old grey whistle test and so on... could make an already amazing project that much more important! some of their radio shows which i have somewhat decent quality bootlegs of are just stellar.

it really is too bad that they did not record more live shows back in the days for the masses... a proper tinderbox era live record would fucking cause me to go insane, as well as peepshow era, though that one desperately needed a documentation on film. one of the best shows i still have ever seen in my life.
