Where is the LOVE for Prince Far I?

Okay, one more of these for me today -- I acquired Health and Strength earlier this week and it's excellent. It's terrible that it was lost for 18 years!

i so need to hear some proper stuff .. his vocals on ON-U productions has always been a massive favourite part of the sound.

i mean "Bedward the flying Preacher" is probably one of my all time fave tracks.

but to my eternal shame, i have never heard anything non-ON-U related

where to start ?

HERE is the love!

"where to start ?"

The Virgin / Frontline comp. Black Man Land and the Sanctuary / Trojan comp. Heavy Manners: Anthology 1977-83 are both excellent and between them cover pretty much all the bases.

Well, considering that I started with Health and Strength and like it a whole lot, I recommend it if you can find it. My first exposure to him was "Quante Jubila" on the Singers and Players album War of Words when I was 15 and I thought it was one of the most awesome songs I've ever heard. I still think so, too!

I absolutely love Prince Far I. Some of my favorite records are Under Heavy Manners and Cry Tuff Dub Encounter Chapter 3. Seek out the tracks "Deck of Cards" and "Big Fight" if nothing else. Psalms for I is worth hearing in that the "Voice of Thunder" elevates simple Bible verses to the roiling and caustic, careful may make you a believer.

Prince Far I: totally classic!

Go for the voice, stay for the dub.

Staggering Heights is great (probably the best On-U record IMO.) Psalms For I, Black Man Land, the Cry Tough Dub Encounter series are all really good. Probably (other than Dr Alimantado) my favorite deejay (although in the right mood I might say I-Roy or Big Youth too-so take that with a grain of salt.)

I didn't realize that Long Life got reissued on CD either. Ooooh. Also Dubwise is good, but obv little to no vocals on it.

Also, there was a really thoughtful and detailed and discography of Prince Far I in one of the two issues of 50 Miles of Elbow Room. If you can track that down, it's totally great. That's how I got into Far I. If anyone's interested, I will try to find and send a photocopy of the article.

Silver & Gold (the recent Blood & Fire comp) is fabulous. Maybe my favorite Far I record?

^^^^^ Was just debating whether to download Silver & Gold or Health & Strength from eMusic.

Sometimes I'm not so fond of toasting, so I've been hedging a bit. But the AMG review of H&S says it's "essential," which is pretty high praise.

I could get rid of all my other records & just keep the Prince Far I ones and be completely content in life. For real.

Tough call between these two - "Johnny Get Worse" however is one of my favorite songs of all time.

Yeah, I'm prolly going to download them both. Johnny Get Worse is PF1 toasting over Johnny Too Bad, that great Slickers song on the Harder They Come soundtrack. Never heard from that group again.

when he says "nobody knows where the hearse comes from" it's like my favorite moment ever

One of two extant clips of Prince Far I live afaik, and the other one's just 18 seconds long. Hadn't seen this at all, it just surfaced recently. Audio's terrible, but his power as a live performer is clear & palpable.

some audio-only live clips available.

Thanks Aero! Magnetic performer - can't look away when he's in camera.

i live in shame no more.
couple of years ago i picked up 'heavy manners' which consists of 4 complete albums on 2 cds.
righteous dub.

"Go for the voice, stay for the dub." << wise words.

Aw "Breakthrough" album is good! Sounds like Black Ark but discogs says produced by Earl Chin.

just some of the deepest records ever

I did at one point find a full-length video of him live with Sons of Arqa in Germany

all time!

does anyone have Showcase In A Suitcase? i thnk i have been looking for a copy for longer than any other record i'm after but it appears to be crazily hard to find. one day!

stirmonster, Thursday, 27 October 2022 22:34 (three years ago)

I don't think, in 40 years of regularly looking in reggae sections in record shops, that I've ever seen a copy. I imagine it only got a very limited release because other reggae LPs on PRE were easy to find (like, I have a very clear memory of the Congo Ashanti Roy LP in Debenhams in Exeter!) and although SIAS is v good it's not so astoundingly amazing that it wouldn't have emerged from a few record collections over the years. (Thanks for the Dorane LP BTW, it's terrific).

Tim, Friday, 28 October 2022 08:59 (three years ago)

I'd always assumed Pre would have pressed a reasonable number of copies (i have seen his 'Livity" album on Pre surface a few times) but reckon you are probably right. Glad to hear you enjoyed the Dorane!
