Has the new Deerhoof leaked yet? I know they list it as an October 11th release on KRS. I'm just hoping and dreaming...

Marybeth, Friday, 22 July 2005 15:54 (twenty years ago)

Haven't heard anything about it.

Juno crunch, Friday, 22 July 2005 15:56 (twenty years ago)

I remember someone mentioning on ILM that they heard it and it was excellent.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Friday, 22 July 2005 16:01 (twenty years ago)

nick sylvester to thread in 5..4...

scott pl. (scott pl.), Friday, 22 July 2005 16:09 (twenty years ago)

Right, I believe it was him!

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Friday, 22 July 2005 16:10 (twenty years ago)

live new stuff sounded cool, but Nick is hoarding the promo

Dominique (dleone), Friday, 22 July 2005 16:18 (twenty years ago)

Hmmm... This band are great but so inconsistent. I wish they did more things like that instrumental on the Milkman album (track 4 i think). That was one of the best tracks I heard last year but I can't usually get over that lady's voice.

dog latin (dog latin), Friday, 22 July 2005 16:18 (twenty years ago)

Aww... her voice is so sweet and innofensive, I don't see how it could bother you.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Friday, 22 July 2005 16:19 (twenty years ago)

it's my fave record of the year--they totally upped the ante, fucked the brick

Nick Sylvester, Friday, 22 July 2005 16:21 (twenty years ago)

Does it have any of the brass/string flourishes of Green Cosmos?

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Friday, 22 July 2005 16:23 (twenty years ago)

It's a fine voice but it doesn't suit the music - it's a tiny little high pitched Japanese child's voice wherea the music is big and bouncy and in your face. You want her to go mental but she just mutters gnomish Ono-isms over the mic while the rest of the band rage.

dog latin (dog latin), Friday, 22 July 2005 16:33 (twenty years ago)

-- dog latin (doglati...), July 22nd, 2005.

i tend to think this is why the band's so awesome, but suum cuique

Nick Sylvester, Friday, 22 July 2005 16:35 (twenty years ago)

not much brass/strings, nothing particularly cutesy. it's mostly very straightforward guitar rock (straightforward for deerhoof).

Nick Sylvester, Friday, 22 July 2005 16:38 (twenty years ago)

bunny bunny bunny bunny bunny
sunny sunny sunny sunny sunny

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 22 July 2005 16:40 (twenty years ago)

come see the DUCK!

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Friday, 22 July 2005 16:50 (twenty years ago)

aren't the ok go preparing to release something new, nick?

mark p (Mark P), Friday, 22 July 2005 16:54 (twenty years ago)

You must have OK GO confused w/ the Juan Maclean, Mark.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 22 July 2005 17:02 (twenty years ago)

plus, that ok go thing wasn't really new, it was a collection of b-sides

scott pl. (scott pl.), Friday, 22 July 2005 17:05 (twenty years ago)

sorry, i'm being annoyingly insidey now. i told nick on saturday that the deerhoof needs to be tagged as the new okgo studio album.

mark p (Mark P), Friday, 22 July 2005 17:09 (twenty years ago)

i have it too and I think it's one of their best.

breezy, Friday, 22 July 2005 17:10 (twenty years ago)

Am I the only person alive that's kinda looking forward to the new OK GO album? I mean, c'mon, you can't deny "You're So Damn Hot".

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 22 July 2005 17:11 (twenty years ago)

i'm pretty sure you can.

mark p (Mark P), Friday, 22 July 2005 17:13 (twenty years ago)

bunny bunny bunny bunny bunny

(BTW, this isn't some comment on my feelings for Deerhoof, whom I luv; I just like posting this.)

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 22 July 2005 17:16 (twenty years ago)

Goddamn you Sylvester for hitting the message boards first.

The new Deerhoof is fucking gorgeous. Believe the hype. They've stopped MeltBananaing it up and started making pastoral pop. Will latch itself to college radio like a sucking tick covered in glitter paint.

Whiney G. Weingarten (whineyg), Friday, 22 July 2005 17:29 (twenty years ago)

anxiously awaiting yr AIM flame, whiney

Nick Sylvester, Friday, 22 July 2005 17:30 (twenty years ago)

hmm....I'm excited, but I kinda LIKE the fact that they merge the more Skin Grafty rickety noise stuff with the super sweet 60s pop vibe....

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 22 July 2005 17:31 (twenty years ago)

Quit rhyming at me, fucker!

Email me yr AIM name, doggbro.

Whiney G. Weingarten (whineyg), Friday, 22 July 2005 17:32 (twenty years ago)

Deerhoof sound nothing like Melt Banana.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 22 July 2005 18:13 (twenty years ago)

No they don't. It was more of a statement about the way they put noisy sounds together to great a greater whole.

Whiney G. Weingarten (whineyg), Friday, 22 July 2005 18:15 (twenty years ago)

Anyone care to share? would love to hear it. I'm a huge fan of the Hoof! But not an insider by any means. Would love to dance naked to the new one though. Please, for me, share...
YSI?

Marybeth, Friday, 22 July 2005 18:39 (twenty years ago)

Won't someone help a sister out?

Marybeth, Friday, 22 July 2005 22:00 (twenty years ago)

I'd love to hear this too

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Friday, 22 July 2005 22:35 (twenty years ago)

Is it likely there'll be some kind of singles compilation any time? I want the Come See The Duck 7" so bad but I've never been able to find it, even on Ebay.

I've managed to find the Return of the Wood M'Lady 7" but I can't listen to it properly because my record player is fucked and the channels are mixed up, and the B side has a different song on the left and right channels.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Friday, 22 July 2005 22:39 (twenty years ago)

hee hee "The Hoof"! I like that!

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 22 July 2005 22:39 (twenty years ago)

THIS JUST LEAKED

2 songs in and its THE BEST THING EVER

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 18:19 (twenty years ago)

YSI? pretty please.

jmeister (jmeister), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 18:24 (twenty years ago)

Hold on i'll just zip it up and then YSI.

Check back in a little while.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 18:28 (twenty years ago)

It will be a .rar file though. So you might want to download WINRAR ahead of time.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 18:30 (twenty years ago)

not to sound like anyone's dad but YSI'ing entire albums by independent bands isn't a very cool thing to do

milton parker (Jon L), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 18:30 (twenty years ago)

thanks hari!

milton, fwiw, unless the album is horrible ill be buying it anyway.

jmeister (jmeister), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 18:34 (twenty years ago)

Wow, I guess I'm in the minority here, so far I've found this record to be really boring compared to all the other Deerhoof i've heard. Complete straight-ahead indie guitar rock, but maybe i'm missing something, I'm only twice through it... hope it grows on me, i was really excited about it.

b'angelo, Wednesday, 3 August 2005 18:48 (twenty years ago)

it actually has grown on me a little bit, but the first few times I listened to it, I also had the impression that it was too indie for my tastes. some of it still is, but most of it is just a kinder, gentler Deerhoof

Dominique (dleone), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 19:04 (twenty years ago)

Indie? Or did they learn how to write songs?

Patrick South (Patrick South), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 19:20 (twenty years ago)

Patrick, is that comment sarcastic or not? I would say that the _songwriting_ might be technically more solid, craft-wise, but also say that the composition, in general, is not nearly as powerful or interesting, if that makes sense.

b'angelo, Wednesday, 3 August 2005 19:24 (twenty years ago)

I don't think Deerhoof suddenly learned how to "write songs" - I mean, one of the reasons I liked them was because of their songs. I like when bands mess with songs, make them go B when I expect A and stuff like that. Greg Saunier has a great knack for doing that (kind of reminds me of early XTC in that way, still very "pop", but hyperactive pop). Runners Four is still basically Deerhoof structure, just a bit less, I don't know, hyper. Maybe this is their Mummer.

Dominique (dleone), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 19:38 (twenty years ago)

AHHH! Where can I find it? Slsk? YSI please please please

marybeth, Wednesday, 3 August 2005 19:52 (twenty years ago)

marybeth otm.

john in chicago (frankE), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 20:14 (twenty years ago)

heh, sorry for the bump-tease

john in chicago (frankE), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 20:14 (twenty years ago)

Hari? I know you'll come through for me... :)

marybeth, Wednesday, 3 August 2005 20:30 (twenty years ago)

Ahhh

Sorry guys i spent half an hour trying to work out how to convert it to .rar or .zip. Then my girlfriend distracted me.

I will give this another go now.

And also I don't feel bad about doing a YSI for a band on an Indie because I have confidence that 90% of people here will buy the album if they like it. And if they don't like it then fair enough they can delete it and save their money rather than buy another useless product. And really, unless you're a raging capitalist who gives a shit anyway. That said I always buy the CD.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 20:56 (twenty years ago)

there' s a press release for the album on their publicity city site (coverart, writeup, lyrics)

http://blueghostpublicity.com/band_profile.asp?bandid=4

perfect for a man or lady, Friday, 5 August 2005 12:20 (twenty years ago)

i'm slightly disappointed with this album, but thats ok cos i was disappointed with the last two albums when i first heard them & then ended up loving them. does anyone know if theres going to be a vinyl version released?

zappi (joni), Friday, 5 August 2005 12:37 (twenty years ago)

"running thoughts" is great but not really into the rest. i think they peaked with 'reveille' (or however it's spelled). please push twee vox back into the mix instead of foregrounding them kthxbye

amon (eman), Sunday, 7 August 2005 05:26 (twenty years ago)

I just have to say it again. Brilliant! Like the sun bursting through on a cloudy day. I don't think anyone will top this one for years.

marybeth, Wednesday, 10 August 2005 17:21 (twenty years ago)

You're getting me so excited Marybeth! You made me preview 4 songs! *grr* I loved them all.. "Spy on You" and "Lightening Rod, Run" in particular.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 20:10 (twenty years ago)

Brainwasher,
You ain't heard nothing yet!
I know it doesn't sound right, but listen to it now. And make sure to speak about it in reverence to all of your friends, neighbours, family...anyone who's ear you have. Tell them to listen to Deerhoof.
I do not think I've ever been as excited and brought to such an intense level of connection and refreshment.
It all comes together on this one. I am grateful that The Runners Four have stealed through customs and into my life!

marybeth, Thursday, 11 August 2005 04:23 (twenty years ago)

predictibly i love this now, tracks 3-10 especially.
now v. excited about hearing these songs live!

zappi (joni), Thursday, 11 August 2005 04:27 (twenty years ago)

AND I cannot emphasize enough how much that this album has to be listened to in it's entirety. It is not just a collection of songs but a story as exciting as I am sure Homer's Odyssey was in his time. An amazing work which works on oh so many levels. I will continue to enjoy this with the same sort of intensity for years to come.

Deerhoof...visionaires!

Marybeth, Thursday, 11 August 2005 04:31 (twenty years ago)

Deerhoof is the best. Thanks for recommending it. I love it. Can't get enough. The best thing they've ever done for sure.

Gerardmonchichi, Thursday, 11 August 2005 17:06 (twenty years ago)

I love Deerhoof!

momusfriend, Wednesday, 17 August 2005 15:29 (twenty years ago)

who else sings in this band besides the bassist?

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Thursday, 25 August 2005 10:56 (twenty years ago)

greg the drummer. one of the guitarists sings on "scream team" as well.
anyone know the uk tour dates yet?

zappi (joni), Thursday, 25 August 2005 11:42 (twenty years ago)

let's keep talking about this great album

j. rosenberg (pukeandburn), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 15:19 (twenty years ago)

has it even come out yet?

Palpatean Mists, Wednesday, 7 September 2005 15:36 (twenty years ago)

Not yet...leaked, though

jeffrey michael rosenberg get in here right now young man (pukeandburn), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 15:38 (twenty years ago)

Deerhoof are the saviours of indiedom. This album is the grail.
October is too far away.

timelag, Wednesday, 7 September 2005 15:42 (twenty years ago)

indiedom?

perols, Wednesday, 7 September 2005 15:56 (twenty years ago)

Dom Passatino's evil twin

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 21:54 (twenty years ago)

Hmm i can't wait to download this and not buy it. I don't care if they lose money, i don't have any.

Wee Lad, Wednesday, 7 September 2005 22:01 (twenty years ago)

noise is shit

noise is shit, Wednesday, 7 September 2005 22:07 (twenty years ago)

It's pretty excellent. I can't stop listening to "Wrong Time Capsule."

Greg sez they've been given/sent a ton of Deerhoof covers from other bands and interested parties and they're planning on postin' some of them on the KRS website.

ng-unit, Wednesday, 7 September 2005 23:32 (twenty years ago)

y'all r seriously underesteeming these runners 4 singsongs the best thing happened to this planet 'cept no DC show what? fckn pandahatin morgantown wv hicktown?? hope they don't sleep on friend friend couches lest football happens

diditall, Thursday, 8 September 2005 14:19 (twenty years ago)

Haven't heard the album yet but last night's show must have featured all the songs. Incredible. Somehow they've gotten even MORE telepathic, MORE ferocious.

I would like Greg Saunier and Brian Chippendale to release a Max Roach-Buddy Rich-style "dueling drums" record.

Dr. Gene Scott (shinybeast), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 11:37 (twenty years ago)

Then you must check out the record Greg did with Zac Hill of Hella and Joanna Newsom!

ng, Wednesday, 14 September 2005 12:53 (twenty years ago)

Wha—?! For real? (Does. Not. Compute.)

Dr. Gene Scott (shinybeast), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 13:31 (twenty years ago)

I mean, does she sing on it? And if not — can anyone ysi?

Dr. Gene Scott (shinybeast), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 13:33 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, for real! It's called Nervous Cop. Brandon Stosuy has a review in the Pitchfork archive, but you can use what every trusted source you like for more info.

ng-unit, Wednesday, 14 September 2005 13:37 (twenty years ago)

Oof. That was not inspiring. (Searching glowing review to justify purchase/theft...)

Dr. Gene Scott (shinybeast), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 14:15 (twenty years ago)

watchoo talkin bout willis? NERVOUS COP disc is the shit!!! what all concrete / acousmatic should have been - a retro futurist reinvention via drum battle absolutely Stellar stuff - nice to hear ms newsom not acting cutesy & just playing some delightful (improv?) abstraction also

bob snoom, Wednesday, 14 September 2005 14:19 (twenty years ago)

No, not me, Bob. I meant the review was not inspiring. I will consider your enthusiasm the justification I was looking for...can you post this thing?

Dr. Gene Scott (shinybeast), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 14:44 (twenty years ago)

nervous cop is dreadful

gary d'bleunre (dr g), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 15:03 (twenty years ago)

"Hari, well said."

-----could someone explain this

A Viking of Some Note (Andrew Thames), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 15:17 (twenty years ago)

I gave a link to a Nervous Cop track in the ysi/gmail thread. Don't get too excited, the album's pretty bad.

These Robust Cookies (Robust Cookies), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 15:49 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...
martha colburn's new 16mm film... is the new deerhoof video!

http://marthacolburn.com/deeerhooof/DH_stream.mov

this is such the great thing to have happened. she's such a cool filmmaker. this video is fun, but the main reason for happiness today was me discovering her online archive of her old films: http://marthacolburn.com/index.php?id=7

cats amore!

milton parker (Jon L), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 18:08 (twenty years ago)

They sold out the Great American Music Hall in SF on Saturday night (capacity 600).

I believe their last hometown gig was at the Elbo Room (maybe 100-120 people at the show).

What happened in the last 3 months?

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 19:16 (twenty years ago)

This record rocks!

mcd (mcd), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 19:21 (twenty years ago)

Definitely my favorite record of theirs. I can't get past "Twin Killers," and that's track 2. It's also nice to have the lyric sheet and see how she does some interesting things to fit the lyrics in. Yeah, loving this.

Stuck to a Seat in the New Beverly (Bent Over at the Arclight), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 20:33 (twenty years ago)

I can't get into this album.

I was CRYING when Huell Howser's head exploded in a local feed store (dr g), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 20:38 (twenty years ago)

"running thoughts" is my immediate favorite track so far... simply cause that sound doesn't remind me of anything else they've done.

m.

msp (mspa), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 20:51 (twenty years ago)

good video... that song + video screams... "WHO SELLS OUT!" am i imagining that?
m.

msp (mspa), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 20:57 (twenty years ago)

well, i see it's already been said a few times, but i picked this up yesterday (along with the new animal collective) and it's pretty much the best thing ever.. (Feels isnt' too shabby, either.)

poortheatre (poortheatre), Thursday, 20 October 2005 05:03 (twenty years ago)

two weeks pass...
This album is awesome, but I really can't fucking take her voice anymore. I love that weird, sort of incongruous afro-pop sounding track. It came in right when I was starting to get bored.

Hurting (Hurting), Thursday, 3 November 2005 05:32 (twenty years ago)

I mean someone needs to develop a patch that edits out her voice.

Hurting (Hurting), Thursday, 3 November 2005 05:34 (twenty years ago)

what i've heard of this record (probably half of it) i find uninspiring and their 'eccentricities' seem to be getting a bit predictable and irritating.

john p. irrelevant (electricsound), Thursday, 3 November 2005 05:42 (twenty years ago)

But the music is so awesome and I hardly think it's overly "eccentric" outisde of the singing (I actually think the rhythm section sounds kind of like The Who)

Hurting (Hurting), Thursday, 3 November 2005 05:46 (twenty years ago)

Do you actually think it kind of does?
http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=mozclient&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&q=deerhoof+keith+moon

eek, Thursday, 3 November 2005 07:53 (twenty years ago)

(But also y'know The Who's rhythm section was pretty eccentric)

eek, Thursday, 3 November 2005 07:57 (twenty years ago)

Pitchfork in WTF shocka:

Deerhoof release their first straight-up guitar-rock album-- short, dense songs packed into familiar forms, full-bodied vocals for unabashed, often gut-punching melodies, less herk-jerk, less of that house-of-cards spirit that coursed through Reveille and Apple O. Almost twice the length of their other LPs, The Runners Four plays not as one big song, but as three swoops of six or seven, and the result is by turns jubilant, confused, afraid, angry, sad, relieved, and all pretty poignant

Wha? How is this album any more guitar-rock or less "herk-jerk" than Reveille? Nick, care to explain?

Hurting (Hurting), Saturday, 5 November 2005 15:12 (twenty years ago)

four years pass...

shit is sounding good right now

El GarBage (M@tt He1ges0n), Friday, 19 February 2010 16:47 (sixteen years ago)

four years pass...

I would like Greg Saunier and Brian Chippendale to release a Max Roach-Buddy Rich-style "dueling drums" record.
