world-weariness, nostalgia, adult recognition that thanatos will trump eros every single time vs...

cocaine paranoia, aimless velocity, big drums, living too damn fast for the reaper to catch you vs...

disappointment, regret, shame, the inevitable, tragic, desperate appeal to the redemptive power of sex, even though you know that's where it all went wrong in the first place...

classic vs. classic vs. classic

Are you lonesome tonight? Ain't the night heavy?

"We've Got Tonight" touches on similar themes as well.

I'm not a fan of Browne's ballads; the only one i can listen to without getting repulsed by his sensitive-macho bathos is "In The Shape of A Heart." And "Lonely Ol'Night" isn't my favorite Coog raveup (that honor goes to "Get A Leg Up). So Billy by default, but the guitars DO sound great.

I have a soft spot for "I'm Alive", though I have to ignore what we know of the biography to not think "you dick!"

The sensitive-macho of "Tender" interests me because it comes close to inhabiting (i.e., representing in a plausible way) the subjectivity of the kinid of guy who hits his girlfriend and then writes songs about how sad he is when she finally leaves him.

PS - How the hell do you slap Darryl Hannah around? She's huge!

haha - pwned, but I'm assuming that's a 50-Foot Woman pic?

I'll take "Because the Night" or Pat Benatar's "Shadows of the Night" over any of 'em.
