Everyone says that "The First Conspiracy" by The (International) Noise Conspiracy is a bad album but I always though it was their best.

What are albums that YOU like that might make others mouth's cringe?

in the spirit of the question though, i think this is the best sugarcubes album.

Manic Street Preachers: Know Your Enemy

Everybody hates it, and I don't quite understand why. If a bunch of skinny hipsters sharing a loft in Williamsburg released Know Your Enemy tomorrow, people would be falling all over themselves praising it to the skies.

this is widely regarded as shit, but it's among my favourite albums. Circus Envy, for instance, is brilliant, and Let Me In, and You...I can't see why most people dislike it so much.

dasein, Saturday, 23 July 2005 00:20 (twenty years ago)

I actually like that Monster, too.

Yeah Turin Brakes! They're just making that folk-pop for the WB set for the new millenium, it's okay!

Candicissima (candicissima), Saturday, 23 July 2005 00:42 (twenty years ago)

I think Metal Machine music is brilliant and not in an ironic way or as any kind of statement or any of that nonsense. It's hard to mention that though without people thinking your being willfully obscure or contrary.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Saturday, 23 July 2005 00:48 (twenty years ago)

I like MMM, too. it's just not my favorite Lou Reed album.

That One Guy (That One Guy), Saturday, 23 July 2005 00:49 (twenty years ago)

Armand Van Helden, Gandhi Khan, because I really like a cheap laugh.

Gandhi Khan was the first album that popped into my mind when I saw this thread title.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Saturday, 23 July 2005 05:36 (twenty years ago)

albums i love that too many people THINK are bad:

minutemen, project: mersh -- severely underrated even by the band

ashlee simpson, autobiography -- underrated even by those who get a kick out of the singles

black sabbath, never say die -- overflowing with new-wavey pop songwriting energy

black sabbath, never say die -- overflowing with new-wavey pop songwriting energy

Not sure it's new wavey , but yeah - both the title track and "Junior's Eyes" are fucking great.

Similarly,....though largely written off by the fans, I quite like both...

johnny blade is fucking great too. new wavey in a loose, metallized "ready steady go" punk-pop sense. kinda sorta. especially the title track.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Saturday, 23 July 2005 06:24 (twenty years ago)

I second Flush the Fashion! My cousin came to visit and had a copy with him. I had to go get my own copy when he left.

Sweat Loaf (Sweat Loaf), Saturday, 23 July 2005 08:46 (twenty years ago)

I *like* Here Today, Tomorrow Next Week, but I wouldn't say that it's the *best* Sugarcubes album.

I've got that Turin Brakes album too, but I don't think I've listened to it for a year or two.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Saturday, 23 July 2005 13:39 (twenty years ago)

Morley Timmons (Donna Brown), Saturday, 23 July 2005 14:25 (twenty years ago)

CHUCK BERRY'S GOLDEN HITS, the mid-sixties album on Mercury where Chuck recut a grip of his older Chess sides. His voice is all echoey and the bass is playing these busy patterns that weren't there in the first place, but for some funny reason I like it. When I was a teenager, I saw the movie PORKY'S where they used the "wrong" versions of Chuck's hits and I was like "hmmm, that ain't so bad!"

Jay Watts III (jaywatts), Saturday, 23 July 2005 22:46 (twenty years ago)

Top Ten Albums Of The 00's That Few Peers Seem To Enjoy But I Think Are Super-Nifty (to be fair, usually a few have concurred as to their greatness)

1. Good Charlotte, The Young & The Hopeless
2. Kelly Osbourne, Shut Up!
3. Bumblebeez 81, Printz
4. Sugar Ray, Sugar Ray
5. Louis XIV, The Best Little Secrets Are Kept
6. Limp Bizkit, Chocolate Starfish & The Hot Dog Flavored Water
7. Weezer, Maladroit
8. Moby, Hotel
9. Powerman 5000, Transform
10. Enrique Iglesias, Escape

miccio (miccio), Saturday, 23 July 2005 23:17 (twenty years ago)

(xpost) I love Terror Twilight!

Here are mine. I'm sure I can think of more, but this is what I've reevaluated recently (and I'm drunk now):

David Bowie, Never Let Me Down
Duran Duran, Notorious
Liz Phair, Whitechocolatespaceegg

Supertramp - Famous Last Words

Joe (Joe), Sunday, 24 July 2005 00:14 (twenty years ago)

Who said 'Four Sail' is bad? It's frickin' awesome.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Sunday, 24 July 2005 00:58 (twenty years ago)

Man, every Pavement fan I've known has detested Terror Twilight - I thought it was spectacular, but then again, I was never a teenage obsessive Pavement fan - in fact, I only paid attention to them around 2001 or so.

Jay Watts III (jaywatts), Sunday, 24 July 2005 01:48 (twenty years ago)

RICKEY WRIGHT: I agree with you and Chad - LOVE FOUR SAIL is an excellent album, but several Love fans judge the band by the first three albums, which veered between garage, folk-rock and psychedelia. LOVE FOUR SAIL had none of that, but as far as late-60's hard rock, it's still a killer.

CHAD: LOVE FOUR SAIL wasn't Love's last album. REEL TO REAL was, and THAT one stunk! Although it did have it's moments (and the remake of "Be Thankful For What You Got" wasn't one of them).

Rev. Hoodoo (Rev. Hoodoo), Sunday, 24 July 2005 03:49 (twenty years ago)

Rev. Hoodoo (Rev. Hoodoo), Sunday, 24 July 2005 03:56 (twenty years ago)

I love Turin Brakes!! I love everything they've ever recorded.

Alfred, please tell me whomever has said Notorious is a "bad" album so I can beat the shit out of them. Just (partially) kidding. Or am I? (I mean, if you had said Big Thing, I would have understood, but Notorious?! Sheeyot, that was a thing of beauty!)

And many people might think that Kajagooogoo's White Feathers was, well, not especially noteworthy, but I love that album. It's fun! Sure, it might be a bit lightweight, but it's also got more depth than one would expect. "Hang On Now" = musical heartbreak, both in its subject matter and in the way it makes the listener feel. Well, at least THIS listener, so nyah.

The Kind and Benevolent Oracle of Dee (Dee the Lurker), Sunday, 24 July 2005 06:04 (twenty years ago)

i think these are brilliant but they didn't sell and their own diehard fans disowned them
duran duran "big thing".
erasure "cowboy".
michael jackson "invincible".

denise and delroy, Sunday, 24 July 2005 06:59 (twenty years ago)

Bowie - 'Never Let Me Down'. Tin Machine.

geeta (geeta), Sunday, 24 July 2005 07:02 (twenty years ago)

- Sly & the Family Stone - SMALL TALK
- R.L. Burnside - COME ON IN (techno blues; the ELECTRIC MUD of the 90's)
- Rev. Horton Heat - SPACE HEATER (his fans don't like this one, since there is no psychobilly on this album at all, just straight ahead Lollapalooza hard-rock; could have been really generic, but I like it all the same)
- Solomon Burke - MAKE DO WITH WHAT YOU GOT (his followup to DON'T GIVE UP ON ME; southern soul diehards hate this CD because Don Was produced it like a bad modern blues album on the Alligator label...loud guitars and drums, etc....but, I still like it...just hope he doesn't record another album that sounds like this)

I second "Squeeze"

It's not a good VU album but if you just imagine it's Doug Yule's band or something, it's pretty alright.

Razzle (MichaelCostello1), Monday, 25 July 2005 00:29 (twenty years ago)

Whitechocolatespaceegg is a good album. I love Terror Twilight and nearly everything Pavement ever did, though I don't play the really early (before S&E) stuff too much.

I was going to cite Girls Against Boys Freak*On*Ica, but I got it out a couple months ago, and it was horrible, so no..

daria g (daria g), Monday, 25 July 2005 02:28 (twenty years ago)

yeah that GvsB is embarrassing. i want to give them credit and say they missed their nuwave moment but that record sounds like stabbing westward or something.

tango in the night is my favorite fleetwood mac which is probably a little unorthodox

geoff (gcannon), Monday, 25 July 2005 02:33 (twenty years ago)

http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B0000DHK5W.01._SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg

I don't know if it's necessarily considered a bad album, but it doesn't seem like 999 get any respect for anything they've done other than "Homicide". This album came a couple of years after that, but it was the first of theirs I'd ever heard, and I thought it was really quite brilliant at the time. It was one of the first "British Punk" albums I got into after Never Mind the Bollocks. Turns out, it's not really especially that all that "punk", but I still think it's a great, great record.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 25 July 2005 17:56 (twenty years ago)

I've expressed my love for Highlife around here a few times. I'd probably say Monster is my favourite major-label REM album and Metal Machine Music is the only Lou Reed that even particularly interests me post-Velvets.

Sundar (sundar), Monday, 25 July 2005 20:20 (twenty years ago)

i reckon 'maledictions' and 'bad timing' albums are totally ace. both are in my regular play list ..

the person who drew the cover of BITCHES BREW is dead? well then, that Mooney Suzuki cover up there is one hell of an imitation

I imagine they just used one of his old paintings. It's the same guy who did Abraxas and a bunch of other stuff and I'm sure they just got permission to use one of his existing pieces.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Monday, 25 July 2005 21:27 (twenty years ago)

Also:
Paula Cole, Amen.
Jefferson Airplane, s/t (their 1989 reunion album ... except for that horrid "Summer of Love" song)
Rod Stewart, Camouflage

D.G. Jones (D.G. Jones), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 14:17 (twenty years ago)

999 has gotten some rhino anthology cred-- I think No Thanks! and one or two others. My bad album is Vice Squad's No Cause For Concern.

D.P., Wednesday, 27 July 2005 15:58 (twenty years ago)

Actually listening to Concrete again right now and oof do I love this record.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 16:01 (twenty years ago)

I think it's probably safe to say I'm the only one here who will rep for Elton John's Made in England? For some completely unknown reason, something about that album works for me (although no other ones he's put out since like the 70s have)

Vinnie (vprabhu), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 17:50 (twenty years ago)

I'll confess to liking (somewhat) both post-Morrison Doors albums back when I was in high school. The few bits I remember aren't bad ("Ships With Sails", "Eye of the Sun", even "Mosquito" is amusing).

nickn (nickn), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 19:02 (twenty years ago)

Hands down Be Here Now by Oasis. The lyrics are absolutely meaningless, more so than oasis albums, and this is saying something. yet the thing has this vibe, this bloated granduer that only 9 grams of cocaine can fully replicate. Tracks like "I Hope, I think, I know" and "My Big Mouth" just thunder along, and the band seems utterly oblivious to any notion of subtlety or tact. i used to love driving the country roads in high school with this turned up as loud as I could get it.

JD from CDepot, Wednesday, 27 July 2005 19:08 (twenty years ago)
