i'm in a hotel downtown in SD and wondering what the best record shop was for me to hit up?

biz, Saturday, 23 July 2005 16:41 (twenty years ago)

If you're into psych, there's a great store called Thirsty Moon in Hillcrest (just north of downtown) and a pretty darn decent used record store just across the street called Record City. There's a shop on University Avenue (around the 2900 block, I think) in North Park called Off the Record that is a pretty good indie/alternative/used records store.

Best record store in the county is Lou's Records in the North County beach town of Encinitas.

any good dance music specialists?

biz, Saturday, 23 July 2005 16:55 (twenty years ago)

dance music 12"s:

Downtown:

Siesta (owned by the record label, house house and more house) is on E street between 8th and 9th (or is it 9th and 10th)...across the street from the library. They were having a 50% off sale this week, may still be going.

Battlemonkey is a new store in an upstairs location on 5th ave. Real small, not huge selection. Hip-hop and D&B oriented as far as I could tell.

Uptown:
Record City. Used records (lots of $1 record bins...) is in hillcrest on 6th ave, right before university.

Further Uptown:
CSL and United are on Clairmont Mesa Blvd between the 805 and 163 freeways.

CSL is the biggest dj record shop in town. Good house, hip-hop, and jungle sections. Lots of electro-house/disco punk (it gets it's own section) Ok to poor techno section (but they basically keep it around just for me and a couple of my friends, so that's understandable)

United is a little further up Clairemont Mesa, on the south side of the street, upstairs in a strip mall. Breaks section is really good I hear (I don't touch that shit, I wouldn't know...) Techno section is surprisingly good.

actually the more I think about it, the more I like the CSL techno selection. It's really not bad, all things considered.

Figured I'd give a shout out to M-Theory in South Park because you know, like, why not?

Juniper near 30th. Good local section.

M-Theory on Washington St. in Mission Hills, Nickelodeon on Adams Ave., and if you're in O.B. again, there's a store called Cow which is right in the same area where you were (further down on Newport toward the beach).

Oh, also! If you didn't know, the San Diego Record Show is this Saturday:

Kobey's Swap Meet is a good place to go on weekends, too.

Yeah, Thirsty Moon is almost all reissues. M-Theory has a decent amount of used vinyl.

Update, y'all? I know M-Theory and Record City. Is Nickelodeon still around?

Would love to hear if there's anything else worth checking out.

Someone bought Folk Arts and they have a new location on El Cajon Boulevard, but I have not been in yet.

Thrift Trader in North Park (the one on Iowa St.) is closing next month, but they have an enormous amount of vinyl. Like rows and rows and big shelves full of records.

San Diegans and other knowledgeable parties: Please recommend choice vinyl shops, circa late 2017. My tastes are pretty catholic but I'm most interested in Forced Exposure-y weirdness, used jazz/soul/reggae, metal, and, right now, early Tanya Tucker. Thanks in advance.

Folk Arts on El Cajon Blvd, Record City in Hillcrest, and M-Theory are the best record stores in the city right now

timellison, Friday, 20 October 2017 05:59 (eight years ago)

I've been gone from San Diego for 10 years now. It's good to hear that both of those places are still open! Looks like Folk Arts is under new management though?

Oh man, the guy who bought it has done amazing things with it, seriously.

timellison, Friday, 20 October 2017 16:11 (eight years ago)

Thank you, one and all.
