Greatest moment EVAH: the Urban Takeover remix of 88.6's
"Wishing On A Star". Most Urban Takeover stuff pre-98 is pretty
good actually.
His album is enjoyable in small doses (*especially* the
unadulterated cheese of "Spice (Even Spicer)") but eventually the
over-use of the basic formula - simple 2-step beat + samples +
groovy, woozy bassline - makes the whole thing a bit tedious,
resembling the forced jollity of second-rate big beat.

His Luniz remix was the token frat boy jungle track over here. It got
really irritating...

I kind of miss jump-up. Critical wisdom at the time was "oh its a
dead end" but for gods sake people are still making identikit
techstep records judging by what I hear any time I wanter into a
dance section and drum and bass is playing.
Aphrodite search: "Drop Top Caddy"/"Bad Ass" - all his virtues in one
compact 12" package. Some of the stuff on the album is also grand -
"Woman That Rolls" for instance - but like Tim says it got to be a
bit of a grind all in one go.

But Tom people *do* still make jump-up. It's just very hard and a
bit dark, or Latin-flavoured. Most dancefloor jungle at the
moment is some sort of jump-up hybrid, be it Aphrodite meets
Optical or Aphrodite meets LTJ Bukem. In my opinion ninety
percent of what's played out resembles jump-up circa '97 as
much as techstep circa '97, if not more.

"drop top caddy" and "bad ass" are the only aphrodite songs that ever
stick with me. he's one of those artists that i start naming other
peoples songs thinking (hoping?) they might be his ("here come the
drumz"...no that's doc scott; "bambaataa"...no that's shy
fx; "muthafucka"...no that's dillinja; etc. etc.) i have a feeling
that on the dancefloor the easy roller opening/spastic melodic
bassline for the rinse-out formula he perfected (the apex of which
being "super sharp shooter"?) was a killer. but unfortunately by 97
i had stopped raving, and have been to about 4 jungle nights since.
