What do you all think?

JT, Sunday, 24 July 2005 11:09 (twenty years ago)

The whole thing was produced by Paris, so the beats are kinda flat and non-confrontational.

Whiney G. Weingarten (whineyg), Sunday, 24 July 2005 14:38 (twenty years ago)

way to bite a title from DJ Spooky, PE

Banana Nutrament (ghostface), Sunday, 24 July 2005 14:50 (twenty years ago)

DW Griffith to thread.

I don't know what this record is (link, please?) but if it is revisiting the songs on Nation of Millions then the title is quite clever.

Sadly, a total dud.

Jay-Kid (Jay-Kid), Monday, 25 July 2005 11:08 (twenty years ago)

How many of you have heard this?

subgenius (subgenius), Monday, 25 July 2005 20:07 (twenty years ago)

I really want to!

I loved that first Paris record back in the day....

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 25 July 2005 21:05 (twenty years ago)

I haven't heard it, but Paris producing PE is like Jeff Lyne finally becoming a Beatle (sic).

PappaWheelie (PappaWheelie), Monday, 25 July 2005 21:07 (twenty years ago)

hahaha

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 25 July 2005 21:10 (twenty years ago)

I got sent a promo copy.

It's a bit like the rap equivalent of Ringo Starr's "Wrack My Brain."

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 26 July 2005 05:59 (twenty years ago)

i got a promo, too, but i haven't put it on as of year, fearing that it will make me sad. after all, chuck d is the only star whose autograph i have beacuse i really really wanted it back then.

Jay-Kid (Jay-Kid), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 13:46 (twenty years ago)

as of yet, obv.

Jay-Kid (Jay-Kid), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 13:48 (twenty years ago)

It's a bit like the rap equivalent of Ringo Starr's "Wrack My Brain."

explain...is that a bad Ringo album? (or are there good Ringo albums? I heard that Beaucoup of Blues was supposed to be good).

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 14:25 (twenty years ago)

The off-the-record story I've gathered is that there was a legal dispute between Paris and PE over releasing this album at all this year. It's been held until next year, at any rate. A new PE album is due in October, and a best-of, with accompanying re-releases of old albums, is due sooner than that.

As for Rebirth, I like the tracks starting with about 10 onward: An unreleased Flavor track, a memorable Chuck number about plastic surgury, and a good Paris song, all in a row, then a great closer.

Pete Scholtes, Tuesday, 26 July 2005 15:32 (twenty years ago)

What a cheap-ass cover...

Pete Scholtes, Tuesday, 26 July 2005 20:06 (twenty years ago)

so its not coming out? weird. youd think paris and PE would be buddy-buddy and see each other through every opportunity to make songs dissing the man.

fizzle, Wednesday, 27 July 2005 09:46 (twenty years ago)

Would have liked to have seen "Nightrain" on the best-of instead of "By the Time I get to Arizona."

Mark (MarkR), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 12:09 (twenty years ago)

Brothers Gonna Work It Out [too bad they didn't use the remixed single]

oh man, i had this on a tape and lost it. it is fucking amazing, and the elpee version is a big let-down by comparison.

N_RQ, Wednesday, 27 July 2005 12:19 (twenty years ago)

wasn't there a Pete Rock remix for Shut 'Em Down that they even used for the video, too? lost opportunities abound.

kit brash (kit brash), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 12:31 (twenty years ago)

'fight the power' sounds better in every context that isn't the album.

N_RQ, Wednesday, 27 July 2005 12:38 (twenty years ago)

can some YSI the better version of Fight The Power, I remember loving this song when I heard it on the radio aged about 12, that must have been the single version I assume. I like the album version well enough, but I haven't heard any other version since 1989! Or last time I saw Do the Right Thing, which was probably around '96.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 12:52 (twenty years ago)

I have the 12-inch version of "Fight the Power" somewhere and remember it as being basically the same as the Black Planet version. It's the mix on the soundtrack that's different. More funky guitar, more Take Six.

That said, I love the sequencing here.

Pete Scholtes, Thursday, 28 July 2005 14:13 (twenty years ago)

Rebirth of a Nation is pretty kinda alright. They recycle alot of samples and lyrics from their glory days, but it works okay.
Yeah, the last four songs are the best part of the album, and just about the only tracks that aren't like "they've already done this one a few times already, haven't they?".

Mike Dixn (Mike Dixon), Thursday, 28 July 2005 14:45 (twenty years ago)

The soundtrack version of Fight The Power is only different because of the sax solo, right?

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Thursday, 28 July 2005 17:36 (twenty years ago)

I could be high, but I've always thought the mix was different on top of that.

Pete Scholtes, Friday, 29 July 2005 00:44 (twenty years ago)

the soundtrack's also the only version that has "motherfuck him and John Wayne" uncensored

kit brash (kit brash), Friday, 29 July 2005 01:02 (twenty years ago)

it's longer, and it has a breakdown? it should do.

N_RQ, Friday, 29 July 2005 14:57 (twenty years ago)

"14. Shut Em Down"

Got job not using the Pete Rock version. Crazy.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 29 July 2005 15:09 (twenty years ago)

Soundtrack version had a sax solo and uncensored John Wayne diss. Brothers Gonna Work it Out remix was not half as good as LP version - tbe extended beat intro and dj-like repeat effects took away from the track.

Hi,

If any one is in London UK, tune into 87.5 fm on saturday nights from about midnight they are playing good underground hip hop at the moment !!

They were playing the PE single out now Feat: Dead Prez

I liked it !!

Clare, Tuesday, 9 August 2005 12:32 (twenty years ago)

Big up P.E - i've followed them since day dot!! Its good to see them trying something new, so far i've heard 'RISE - i fuckin love it!! just bought the new single as well 'CAN'T HOLD US BACK' - i like that too. Can't wait to hear the full album.

MAVERIC, Tuesday, 9 August 2005 18:54 (twenty years ago)

Rehash of a Nation would be a better title... just about every song has some reused lyric or rhyme style from a previous PE classic.. and it's more Paris than PE! Weak beats, sloppy production/editing, just a really half-assed effort.
