What music did you hate when you were 15?

A lot of us are around 30 yrs old and probably didn't care much for NKOTB in 1989 [oh shit], but what other 'alternative' music or music scenes did you react against during this period?

I didn't like Skinny Puppy, Front 242, Depeche Mode, Thrill Kill Kult, Ministry, NIN: these were the bands that one particularly large group seemed to embrace. And another group seemed to center around RHCP and Jane's Addiction.

I was all american indie and shoegaze. I guess I was rockist even then. That goth/industrial crowd did have lousy taste, though. I mean, right??

Aaron A., Monday, 25 July 2005 02:19 (twenty years ago)

i can't really vouch for front 242, but all those other goth bands rule.

I really hated korn then. I had a feeling they were the start of the whole nu-metal thing that came afterwards. i also hated metallica.

Fetchboy (Felcher), Monday, 25 July 2005 02:23 (twenty years ago)

almost all of it

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Monday, 25 July 2005 02:26 (twenty years ago)

all music from the 80's

Michael B, Monday, 25 July 2005 02:30 (twenty years ago)

Uh Korn didn't exist in 1989, did they?

In 1989 I hated everything with synthesizers, decypherable lyrics, or rhythm. What a little turd I was.

Good Dog (Good Dog), Monday, 25 July 2005 02:32 (twenty years ago)

in 1985 i didn't hate any top 40 song.
i hated country,opera and hip-hop.

ramona bruland fanboy, Monday, 25 July 2005 02:33 (twenty years ago)

That goth/industrial crowd did have lousy taste, though. I mean, right??

SO WRONG.

I hated glam metal and country. I still hate glam metal and country. OH NOES ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT (who were awesome)

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 25 July 2005 02:37 (twenty years ago)

Hated: R&B (Color Me Bad, Boyz to Men, etc.), Guns and Roses.

daavid (daavid), Monday, 25 July 2005 02:51 (twenty years ago)

1997/98, so um... Rap, Celine Dion (Christ my parents listened to her wayyyy too much), Dave Matthews (still).

Bryan Moore (Bryan Moore), Monday, 25 July 2005 03:00 (twenty years ago)

Staind. Yep! Staind.

Horridmonsta (MichaelCostello1), Monday, 25 July 2005 03:01 (twenty years ago)

SKA

i still kinda hate it.

latebloomer: lazy r people (latebloomer), Monday, 25 July 2005 03:02 (twenty years ago)

I hated disco of all kinds and most electronic and 99% of pop and now I love them all. Please bear in mind that at the time, I was mostly listening to Les Miserable and Cats soundtracks, Metallica, Pink Floyd, Robert Johnson, Faith No More and Ice T. Can't stand by all THOSE choices anymore.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 25 July 2005 03:04 (twenty years ago)

When I was 15, I was more concerned about being outed for listeing to Herb Alpert and Steve Allen in my spare time, as opposed to all the Hip-Hop I was known for.

PappaWheelie (PappaWheelie), Monday, 25 July 2005 03:44 (twenty years ago)

d00d -- so OTM. I also liked Meatloaf. A lot.

Like, I had a poster.

Remy (x Jeremy), Monday, 25 July 2005 03:51 (twenty years ago)

"hard rock" (ted nugent, kiss, aerosmith, bob seger). i thought it was scary music for scary people (honest!)

xhuxk, Monday, 25 July 2005 03:55 (twenty years ago)

Also: props to the people on this thread brave enough to admit genuine adolescent musical tastes instead of the arguably defensible shit they generally post. "Ooh, I can't believe I liked [Sting/Green Day/et al.]. I was sooo lame .... " etc., etc. ...

It busts my nuts when people figure their preterit tastes in such a way that their present-tense genius is marked by juxtaposition to not-great but not-awful music that a significant portion of listeners appreciated / tolerated at the time of its release.

Remy (x Jeremy), Monday, 25 July 2005 03:56 (twenty years ago)

bob seger? (xpost)

Remy (x Jeremy), Monday, 25 July 2005 03:56 (twenty years ago)

I found some old mix tapes that I used to listen to at 15 with tracks by Damn Yankees, Aerosmith, George Michael, the Cure, Howlin' Wolf, the Fu-Schnickens, Young MC, REM and most of Jesus Christ Superstar on side B. I used to meticulously hand letter the liners on TDK insert flaps in multiple color inks.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 25 July 2005 04:10 (twenty years ago)

I am turning thirty in about a week. I should really make an "At 30 mix tape" to commemorate.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 25 July 2005 04:10 (twenty years ago)

[xpost to Remy I suppose] I started this thread thinking about how Ned must've been one of those goths I thought I was cooler than, and how much broader deeper and more refined his tastes are now (than mine)

Aaron A., Monday, 25 July 2005 04:12 (twenty years ago)

I so totally misread the thread.

When I was 15 I used to hate ACDC, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Iron Maiden, Queen, and Bon Jovi. That shit was oppressive in the mid-eighties, man. Music for getting your head punched in to.

Good Dog (Good Dog), Monday, 25 July 2005 04:18 (twenty years ago)

The Blues.

I Should Coco Schwab (Arthur), Monday, 25 July 2005 04:31 (twenty years ago)

i was 15 in '91. i hated garth brooks sorta contemporary nashville country stuff (still do, with a few exceptions). i don't remember outright hating anything else, but at the time i was lukewarm to the shoegaze craze.

not gettin' hassled, not gettin' hustled (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 25 July 2005 05:04 (twenty years ago)

country and hair metal. still not crazy about either.

geoff (gcannon), Monday, 25 July 2005 05:15 (twenty years ago)

I hated Beastie Boys' "License to Ill" and Motley Crue's "Theatre of Pain".

Pangolino 2, Monday, 25 July 2005 05:17 (twenty years ago)

Pangolino 2, Monday, 25 July 2005 05:23 (twenty years ago)

i hated Poison

breezy, Monday, 25 July 2005 05:25 (twenty years ago)

1992 - at 15, it wasn't so much a matter of 'hated' as 'paid absolutely no attention to' and that was pretty much everything other than hip-hop and jazz. I think 'Smells like Teen Spirit threatened to pique my interest back toward 'white people music' for a minute(I was tuned in enough to champion the death of metal and its variants as a mainstream force) but that world seemed so big and unwieldy and irrelevant I didn't bother with it for a few more years. I made a show of hating adult contemporary and pop when I was riding in the car with the folks, but I was kidding myself, I can recite Amy Grant songs with the best of them.
I guess I only really hated metal and 'defensible stuff' like Richard Marx and Bryan Adams and such, which I don't think is so wrong, I went through my precocious/pretentious music-lover phase long before 15 and I'd assume that would be the case with most ilm'ers.

tremendoid (tremendoid), Monday, 25 July 2005 05:54 (twenty years ago)

The Cure, The Sex Pistols and The Pixies.

nicholas de jong (nicholas de jong), Monday, 25 July 2005 06:54 (twenty years ago)

I *HATED* most classic rock (1988), mainly due to it's ubiquity and received coolness and the fact that nobody would listen to my noisy pop records.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 25 July 2005 07:02 (twenty years ago)

This would have been 1991, so I hated Guns'n'Roses, Poison, Warrant, etc. Most of the older kids at my school were either into hair metal or classic rock (Deep Purple, Pink Floyd etc) which I wasn't that fond of either but would put up with over the hair stuff.

Also, chart R&B stuff like BoysIIMen (not sure of dates exactly but whatever the equivalent was in 1991).

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Monday, 25 July 2005 08:33 (twenty years ago)

1978/79: I hated abolsutely EVERYTHING that wasn't either punk or reggae.

But most of all I hated school and my parents, obv.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Monday, 25 July 2005 08:36 (twenty years ago)

I hated hair metal. Poison, Europe, G&R, etc - and their horrid Christian counterparts such as Stryper, that my deranged brother was into.

This made me think anything heavy with guitars must therefore be crap. It took some years and some more openmindednesss to right THAT misconception I must say.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 25 July 2005 08:40 (twenty years ago)

1979 - maybe my favourite year for music. I think I pretended at the time to abhor ELO's Discovery but on the quiet was rather fond of Last Train To London, Horace Wimp etc.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 25 July 2005 08:48 (twenty years ago)

Handbaggy chart disco, sub-Take That boybands and - anomalously, if correctly - The Charlatans. This is 1995

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Monday, 25 July 2005 08:54 (twenty years ago)

1982/1983, I remember hating pretty much everything that was in the charts: Duran Duran, Wham, Culture Club, Tight Fit, anything connected with Fame, Charelene ‘Never been to me’, Shakin’ Stevens etc

stevo (stevo), Monday, 25 July 2005 09:16 (twenty years ago)

I hated everything that wasn't metal, brother! And usually I hated any metal with singing, rather than growling, as well. But times have changed in the last 12 years and now I just laugh at my 15 year old self. Metal's still rad though.

James Slone (Freon Trotsky), Monday, 25 July 2005 09:42 (twenty years ago)

1995, i hated boyzone and that. i probably hated a lot of house and techno. i didn't really hear enough of the stuff i hated, so i didn't hate that much, i suppose. i probably claimed to hate more than i really hated.

N_RQ, Monday, 25 July 2005 09:46 (twenty years ago)

1991-92 (deep in the goth abyss):
Reggae, New Jack Swing, Grunge, Aerosmith, Queen

Baaderonixx cancels each other out (Fabfunk), Monday, 25 July 2005 09:47 (twenty years ago)

I'm very glad the question didn't say 14, which was when my tastes were at their narrowest and scared-est. Before 14 I liked good stuff, afterwards I liked good stuff, at 14 I just wanted to fit in and spent a mournful year listening to Pink Floyd and trying to like Zappa. M/A/R/R/S got to No.1 and I thought it was the worst thing I'd ever heard. A year later (1988) I was coming round to dance music a little bit. Got into hip-hop at 15 too, and indie.

I think I hated Transvision Vamp. I sneered at Bros.

I loathed Dylan and Dire Straits, because I was at boarding school and older boys I hated played them a lot.

I thought metal was lame.

I didn't so much hate music as videos, though. I was just getting into The Smiths and read something where Morrissey criticised videos. Entirely unaware that the Smiths by this point had been making videos themselves, I agreed entirely that videos were a blight.

I was fifteen in 1982 (cripes that's a damn long time ago).

I hated: Dexy's Midnight Runners, John Cougar, Culture Club, Wham!, Kool & the Gang and Toni Basil and "Ebony & Ivory" by McCartney & Wonder.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 25 July 2005 12:22 (twenty years ago)

Being about the same age as Alex, I have just about the same responses. Although Journey would be high on the list as well.

geyser muffler and a quarter (Dave225), Monday, 25 July 2005 12:26 (twenty years ago)

that's what i get for posting a pic of the dreaded EAGLES (15 in 73)country rock ruled in my hometown, and it bored me to tears.

got burnt out on Sir Elton John around then too - "bennie & the jets" 24/7 on every radio station for months = the hook of death

m coleman (lovebug starski), Monday, 25 July 2005 12:57 (twenty years ago)

I didn't like Skinny Puppy, Front 242, Depeche Mode, Thrill Kill Kult, Ministry

I had no idea these bands existed.

I pretty much hated rap, and that's it (although people at my school were friends with members of Bone Thugz N Harmoney, so I kinda liked them).

PB, Monday, 25 July 2005 13:45 (twenty years ago)

1992: I hated metal and pop R&B Boys II Men type stuff.

idiot child

b b, Monday, 25 July 2005 16:21 (twenty years ago)

not a bad swap, i reckon.

at 15 i generally hated any music which was called "soul" or "funk" or "r'n'b" (actually, it was probably called "new jack swing" in 1990). i don't think it was a black thing, i just didn't "get" it, y'know? i listened to Carter USM and The Cure.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Monday, 25 July 2005 16:27 (twenty years ago)

1995: hated all the skate punk stuff like NOFX, Rancid, Pennywise, Propagandhi, 'cause that's what all the kids at my school were into.

alex in montreal (alex in montreal), Monday, 25 July 2005 16:29 (twenty years ago)

DMB, John Mayer, Incubus, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Sublime, 311. Basically, ASSHAT JAMS.

pretty much anything non-canonical.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Monday, 25 July 2005 16:38 (twenty years ago)

I also hated Herbie Hancock's "Rock It" and Flashdance. But I don't remember if I was 15 or 16 then ...

geyser muffler and a quarter (Dave225), Monday, 25 July 2005 16:39 (twenty years ago)

I was 15 in 1988 so I hated pop ballads like Phil Collins and Whitney Houston, most hair metal like Whitesnake and Cinderella, and the "Dirty Dancing" soundtrack.

LeRooLeRoo (Seb), Monday, 25 July 2005 17:03 (twenty years ago)

I was 15 in 1985, but it was also the year I moved away from my hometown. Every light pop tune, the kind a newly-minted metalhead would've surely hated, suddenly had some kind of import. Damnit, I liked what I should have hated. That said, I still didn't like jazz and figured that's what I would be listening to when I became flabby and thirty-five. So yes, I hated all jazz. Horns should not be in music.

p.j. (Henry), Monday, 25 July 2005 17:11 (twenty years ago)

I felt obliged to hate Madonna (this was "Like a Virgin"-era), which was difficult because I really actually liked "Material Girl" and "Into the Groove," and I watched "Desperately Seeking Susan" about 5 times. But still, officially, I hated her. (I gave up the pretense around "Cherish," I think, and was fully converted by "Like a Prayer.")

Alternative stuff, I didn't like Black Flag. Still don't.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Monday, 25 July 2005 17:37 (twenty years ago)

I don't think I ever hated Madonna. I hated isolated Madonna tracks (like "Crazy For You," which is just insanely bad, mawkish, trite, ill-conceived KRAPOLA ON A JIZZ-SPLATTERED SHINGLE!).

That said, I hate Madonna now that she's a sanctimonious, crap-spewing windbag. Her new photospread in Vogue is absolutely hateful.

1979: I hated disco. (Have pretty much recovered.)

Truckdrivin' Buddha (Rock Hardy), Monday, 25 July 2005 17:58 (twenty years ago)

1993/94: I remember really hating Meat Loaf and Celine Dion.

I didn't like that second wave of Meatloaf, either.

p.j. (Henry), Monday, 25 July 2005 19:09 (twenty years ago)

1991 - I hated anything that didn't involve members of/have some distant relationship to: Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, Mudhoney or Nirvana.

SoHoLa (SoHoLa), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 03:03 (twenty years ago)

1972, I don't know if disco had started by then, but I hated it when it was big. If not, probably sappy pop.

Oasis and all their spawn. It was the height of their/'Morning Glory's ubiquity, plus Ocean Colour Scene and all those other showers of cunts that Noel Gallagher and Chris Evans deemed to be brilliant, so we all had to suffer them ad fucking nauseam....it's riling me just thinking back to it, a decade later, haha....
