i second the basic channel discs... as well as the more obvious...

"little fluffy clouds" the orb
or the megamix of "blue room" the orb

to start...

Basic Channel is not ambient house.

Also: most people probably don't need anything more than "The Orb's Adventures Beyond the Ultraworld" to satisfy their yen for so-called ambient house.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 25 July 2005 17:04 (twenty years ago)

the closest thing to ambient house, despite crusty, early 90's claims, is Burger Inc.'s album on Harvest/Matador (Las Vegas). Also check the new Triola.

I remember very well that ambient house used to mean any house or techno that like, sounded pretty and had samples of birds chirping.

Sueno Latino of course.

I guess to most people today if you play them 808 State's Pacific and call it Ambient they'd throw some Brian Eno records at you. But even lots of the Orb was beat-driven.

ambient techno vs. ambient house

a trly great album but i don't understand what u mean - why is that the closest thing to ambient house? the closest thing ever? it's very beat driven too.

jed_ (jed), Monday, 25 July 2005 17:30 (twenty years ago)

I don't remember much differentiation, of course that was when the term techno house was used alot.

Future Sound of London - "Papua New Guinea"
The Beloved - "The Sun Rising (Norty's Spago Mix)"
Orbital - "Belfast"

Frazier Chorus - "Nothing"

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 25 July 2005 17:53 (twenty years ago)

i say it's the closest thing because unlike stuff mentioned on here(Orb/FSOL/Ultramarine - all great rec's) that feature chunky beats with extended ambient breaks, the Burger Inc. album's beats are not upfront. The beats and atmosphere blend so well on Las Vegas, giving it an Ambient House sound. The Orb's classic tracks have long ambient bits interspersed with upfront housey passages.

Space (especially the "Saturn" part)

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 25 July 2005 18:03 (twenty years ago)

Hi Adolph, ever heard of one Robert Miles ? :D

Try Kaito, a bit housey-neo-trancey..ambient. If all else fails tap your feet to birdsong.

Spencer Chow: Thank you mentioning Frazier Chorus!

SoHoLa (SoHoLa), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 03:24 (twenty years ago)

Haha! I used to mix it with The Beloved and Ultramarine. Have you heard Stars - "Counting Stars on the Ceiling"? It has that nice Frazier Chorus vibe.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 16:30 (twenty years ago)

I was going to suggest some things but I'm sure someone will say "that's not ambient house".

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 17:15 (twenty years ago)

i am the asswhipe who'll chime in with "that's not ambient house" but for the sake of the discussion, i'll refrain from objecting to the recommendations. i've always thought the genre's name was misleading but just so we're all on the same page here, Ambient House is the sound defined by early 90's songs like Sun Rising and Blue Room etc.

biz, Tuesday, 26 July 2005 17:21 (twenty years ago)

Ronan, suggest away anyway!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 17:23 (twenty years ago)

funny, i just remembered this term today

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 17:34 (twenty years ago)

at least half of everything Superpitcher has done to thread!

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 17:36 (twenty years ago)

but..but..ah fuck it.

in that case, you might as well add the bits of Amorphous Androgynous and the parts of the first FSOL album to the pile.

biz, Tuesday, 26 July 2005 17:43 (twenty years ago)

Global Communication - The Way / The Deep
fucking Luomo - Vocalcity

Lukas (lukas), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 17:44 (twenty years ago)

xpost, I would definitely add early FSOL tracks! I LOVE "While Others Cry"!
