When is Jack White going to lose the gimmicks?

My advice: hire a bass player; hire a drummer; ditch the costumes.

Nigel (Nigel), Monday, 25 July 2005 19:36 (twenty years ago)

You should wait till he's taking a shower and hide them.

miccio (miccio), Monday, 25 July 2005 19:39 (twenty years ago)

Hide his mustache, too.

darin (darin), Monday, 25 July 2005 19:40 (twenty years ago)

Don't you be hiding his white pants!!! Never, ever, begrudge a handsome man the right to wear white pants. Gimmick or no.

VegemiteGrrl (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 25 July 2005 19:48 (twenty years ago)

Is that a gimmick in your pants or are you etc. etc.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 25 July 2005 19:53 (twenty years ago)

Geese, Nigel. You sound like the part in Freaky Friday (the new one) where Jamie Lee Curtis and Chad Michael Murray are at the coffe house discussing bads they like.

She says "The White Stripes?"
He says "Mmm. Can't Stand Them"
She says: "I Know. I mean, HIRE A BASS PLAYER"

I then they both sing to the punk cover of Hit Me Baby One More Time.

Stupid movie and stupid thread.

Horridmonsta (MichaelCostello1), Monday, 25 July 2005 19:55 (twenty years ago)

"Boy George? More like GIRL George."

Arnold Schwarzenegger, Commando

miccio (miccio), Monday, 25 July 2005 19:57 (twenty years ago)

"hire a drummer" ?

Anyway, I remember Jack White was in a very proficient Detroit band years ago with all the bass players and drummers you need. They were called Goober and the Peas. Check 'em out - you sound right up their street.

everything, Monday, 25 July 2005 20:04 (twenty years ago)

I saw them open for Four Jacks and a Jill at the Ramada in Dearborn. Very tight sound, excellent cover of "Shout."

Haikunym (Haikunym), Monday, 25 July 2005 20:08 (twenty years ago)

I hear they blow Murph and the Magic Tones away.

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 25 July 2005 20:09 (twenty years ago)

Hey, Coober and the Peas are pretty good. It's really good Psychobilly.

Plus if you wanna hear him with bass, try these

The Go: Whatcha Doin'
Loretta Lynn: Van Lear Rose
The Strokes: New York City Cops (Live at Radio City Music Hall) (if you can find it)

and this one I think is pretty ironic, which is probably the joke.
Beck: Go It Alone (in which JW plays bass).

Goober and the Peas... Sounds intriguing. I'll check them out.

Nigel (Nigel), Monday, 25 July 2005 20:20 (twenty years ago)

I was just thinking today how I no longer think it's charming for Jack to so steadfastly stay with Meg. I've obsessed over the White Stripes to varying degrees over the past 5 years, but now I'm just ready for him to ditch her. I've defended her playing as "proficient" and "good enough" for too long....I watched the recent South American concert that MTV played, and decided that she just fucking annoys me now. I reach for the remote every time she sings, I'm not nearly as charmed by her "I'm so innocent" gimmick anymore, and I'm ready for Jack to find a way to match the ferocity of his guitar playing with someone who can do a little more than just barely keep up.

Oh, and I dig his bandido look. For some reason I find everything HE does hilarious.

PB, Monday, 25 July 2005 20:32 (twenty years ago)

gimmicks or not, it makes them a hell of a lot more interesting than a bunch of other tired guitar bands WITH bassists, good drummers and dressed in their normal boring as fuck clothing.

ff, Monday, 25 July 2005 20:33 (twenty years ago)

he needs a drum machine dressed in red and white!

oh wait, he is the gimmicks.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Monday, 25 July 2005 21:01 (twenty years ago)

Aren't The Gimmicks like a Norweigian Bossa Nova group? Oh, we mean the neo-Garage Rock group. That makes sense.

The question is, when are The Gimmicks going to lose Jack White?!

PappaWheelie (PappaWheelie), Monday, 25 July 2005 21:04 (twenty years ago)

This whole line of thought is what leads to awful "supergroup" garbage. Meg is in the band. If Jack White wants to play with other people (as he has in the past), he can call it something else.

schwantz, Monday, 25 July 2005 21:17 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, and it would sell about 10 percent of what anything with "White Stripes" written on the cover would.

everything, Monday, 25 July 2005 21:25 (twenty years ago)

Perfectly valid thread, particularly in context of this article from The New Republic:
http://www.tnr.com/doc.mhtml?i=20050725&s=hajdu072505

From the studied theatricality of the duo's public relationship, through their fetishization of old technology, to the rigid constriction of their music and their highly codified stage presentation, the White Stripes are a small circus of gimmickry.

marc h. (marc h.), Monday, 25 July 2005 21:28 (twenty years ago)

and the worst part is, just like Bruce Springsteen or the "emo" trend, much of their initial appeal to the rockcrit establishment was their supposed "authenticity" vis a vis Britney et al.

PB, Monday, 25 July 2005 21:38 (twenty years ago)

as long as they keep putting out excellent albums he can keep gimmicking like a motherfucker

gear (gear), Monday, 25 July 2005 21:39 (twenty years ago)

I think Ginger Baker (or maybe Phil Rudd) is the only thing that would make the White Stripes remotely interesting. Meg is the least of their problems.

When I think of "The White Stripes," Meg doesn't even enter my mind. She has virtually nothing to do with the recorded music, which I find excellent, unless she sings, and then she's repellant. Live, she can be hugely distracting, because she continually messes up her timing and otherwise flubs up. And lately Jack has been encouraging her to sing, which is like encouraging cheese to walk.

Hopefully he continues to head out into his little side projects and one day realizes the charm and simplicity of Meg White gets old quick.

PB, Monday, 25 July 2005 23:05 (twenty years ago)

Or maybe whaling cheese? That's gonna put a few people out.

Jack White is a delivery system for Meg White. She's a great natural drummer.

Fuck me! The White Stripes have introduced gimmickry to Rock and Roll.

As soon as he strays from the "gimmick" someone is going to say he "sold out" so better to just drive it into the ground, ride a good thing while it lasts, etc. and then move on, possibly.

Like him or not, he is finding some pretty creative things to do with vinyl. I'll give him that much. Too bad that ULTRA version will probably cost like $120 or something, which, uh, it's still just a Jack White solo album.

ultra lp is only $20 which is ALMOST cheap enough to own as a curiousity ...except for the elephant in the room of it being a jack white record

This reminds me of a Mr. Show sketch. Every "bonus" thing is almost comically not-interesting as music or sound. Acoustic/electric split song is a cool idea though.

they weren't very interested in sharing the tunes with us. That said, I think all of those tricks are ace, the angel in particular. Just don't know if I would have blown all those ideas on one record.

I passed up buying a copy of the white stripes first single on Italy records for 20 bucks a few years ago, really regret it.
I'm not a fan and I never buy stuff to flip, but I should have jumped on that.

It's not wire; it's tendons harvested from the corpse of Robert Johnson.
