I lost all my music

40+ GB of musics gone. Not even my self-encrypted stuff survived my hard drive taking a shit all over itself. But I'm not looking for sympathy, I abused it. What I am looking for: where do I start repopulating it? What should be the first album on my replacement computer? First single? Second, third, fouth, five millionth, etc?

That's what you get for being a thief!

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 07:36 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, that's pretty much what I said.

Will M, Tuesday, 26 July 2005 07:37 (twenty years ago)

Yep, I just wanted to rub it in your face a bit more :)

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 07:40 (twenty years ago)

jermaine (jnoble), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 08:09 (twenty years ago)

But isn't that expensive?

xpost

not seriously. i can't afford it. plus my hard drive is still under warranty so i can get a free new one. plus, i was able to save most of my "really" important stuff, projects i'd been working on and the like. mostly all i've really lost is the music and a lot of save fiels for video games.

Will M, Tuesday, 26 July 2005 08:16 (twenty years ago)

start over. a new life. go for stuff you never imagined would be right for you.

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 08:25 (twenty years ago)

Now that's what I call Music - Volumes 1-61. That'll learn ye!

bg (creamolafoam), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 08:26 (twenty years ago)

that might be all anyone needs

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 08:31 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, there was no music worth bothering about pre-1981 anyway!

bg (creamolafoam), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 08:35 (twenty years ago)

first track you dload should be j&j - physics

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 08:39 (twenty years ago)

...or Computer Love.

bg (creamolafoam), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 08:43 (twenty years ago)

Curiously, Computer Love was one of the few tracks that survived.

Down your local record shop.

Those dudes are probably right about the record stores, but here's an upbeat number to get you in the mood to get down there:

(Basement Jaxx - "Where's Your Head At")

I can relate, man. It's depressing.

please. like you've never downloaded an album or 10 or 100. get off your fucking high-horse(s).

what are we talking here, like 600 albums? this cautionary tale reminds me to look more seriously into external storage...

teh Nü and Impröved john n chicago (frankE), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 01:37 (twenty years ago)

I work at the local record store. No need ot tell me to buy music, I do it a couple times a week. Seriously. I didn't intend to make this a stealing music vs. buying music debate-- I was more going for, "if all the music on the planet died, except for your secret collection of every song ever, what would you first repopulate the world's music with?"

I guess it didn't turn out. Whatever.

What this tells you is the impermanence of the virtual vs. the permanance of the physical. Down your local record store.

I've never downloaded a single track in my life. I'm not on a high horse or looking for a medal; I just think vinyl and/or CDs trump binary code.

What the fuck: dude loses his music and you guys hassle him? Yikes. Show a bit of love.

Will, email me and I'll try to get you back on track. What's your taste run to?

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 04:43 (twenty years ago)

I actually have Now That's What I Call Music 40, I think, on cassette. Road Rage by Catatonic was my favourite song for like a year in public school. Maybe I'll start by exploring that band beyond their one track on a British comp tape.

Will M, Wednesday, 27 July 2005 06:14 (twenty years ago)

not where i would have chosen to start but oh well

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 06:15 (twenty years ago)

Forgetful ATM thief loses most of loot

09 December 2003

SIMBACH, Germany — A thief who broke into an ATM at a German bank forgot most of his loot a short time later in a nearby telephone booth, according to a report in the Independent Online.

Police have yet to catch the absent-minded thief, who helped himself to €28 000 ($34,318 U.S.) in 50-euro notes from the ATM in Simbach, then left €23 000 ($28,189 U.S.) next to the phone.

"Perhaps he thought €5 000 ($6,128 U.S.) was enough," quipped a policeman.

Losing all your music because of a hard disk crash is a ludicrous situation. For many, losing all of it takes a more non-trivial action, like the house burning down, an earthquake burying the building, or a thief or pissed off former lover taking all your CDs and vinyl in revenge. What, even incrementally burning CDR's is too Luddite?

Joe Morgensternly, Wednesday, 27 July 2005 16:42 (twenty years ago)

my friend recently had a crash with his External HD. is it a crime for me to copy my HD on to his new one?

biz, Wednesday, 27 July 2005 16:53 (twenty years ago)

Joe, all my shit is backed up, but as recently as a year ago I woulda been in the same sad situation as I tend to get rid of my discs as soon as I rip them.

And I can't feel sorry for the guy unless he loses his music in an earthquake?

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Thursday, 28 July 2005 04:31 (twenty years ago)

I haven't tried this myself, but I had a problem with my hard drive and my friend was able to recover everything -- I'm not sure if any of these are the program he used, but maybe you'll find something useful here.

it's too late-- the old one has been shipped back to Maxtor, to be replaced with a fresh one in a few days. I'll have to wrestle with Soulseek (which seems to be searching with all the zest of a paraplegic amoeba) to find some of the stuff I've lost. But, I'll treat it like I would moving into a new house. As I find need for things, like lawnmowers or a congolese soukous (sp?) album, i'll just find them.

Will M (Will M.), Thursday, 28 July 2005 05:34 (twenty years ago)

Although, if anyone has tracks that they think I should hear, or use to regrow a budding digital music collection, my gmail is open to you. :)

WTF!!!!

I have a Maxtor as well. Can you fill me in on what happened?

Cunga (Cunga), Thursday, 28 July 2005 05:46 (twenty years ago)

One morning I woke up, and it made messy sounds when trying to load. The hardware itself shat a big one. But, Maxtor's have a 3-year warranty. As long as you back up important stuff, you should be fine. From now on, everything I care about will be backed up on BOTH my hard drives, and if one goes down the other will still be good. Ideally. But yeah, apparently Maxtor is shite. It's happened ot several Maxtor owners. Go Seagate or Western Digital ASAP.

Will M. (Will M.), Thursday, 28 July 2005 05:48 (twenty years ago)

How long had you had it?

Damn, I have been looking for a program that will index all the files I have on it in an emergency situation like that. The idea of losing a hard drive or album collection is the closest thing music geeks have to those beer commercials where men everywhere are alerted when the unopened beer bottles shatter.

Cunga (Cunga), Thursday, 28 July 2005 05:54 (twenty years ago)

Maroon. You must be a blogger, or worship at the temple of Wired, right?

or use to regrow a budding digital music collection, my gmail is open to you. :)

Yes, of course!

The idea of losing a hard drive or album collection is the closest thing music geeks have to those beer commercials

Speak for yourself. You're nuts. Lame, too.

Joe Morgensternly, Thursday, 28 July 2005 05:58 (twenty years ago)

without italics or quotes it totally looks like you're a murderer that repeats other people before murdering them!

Nyah, nyah. Don't feed the troll, so to speak.

Joe Morgensternly, Thursday, 28 July 2005 06:06 (twenty years ago)

Ah yes, now I remember you.
You're the guy that went onto the "Absolutely Fucking Amazing Amazon Sale" and shit on everyone when the deal went bad.
How's bad karma treating you these days?

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Thursday, 28 July 2005 06:59 (twenty years ago)

Curiously, Computer Love was one of the few tracks that survived.

It's a hint with a tinge of revenge. Clearly you haven't given your computer enough love.
