For those who've heard Clinic's new album: Does it live up to "Internal Wrangler"?

first impression was not a super strong one. "The Equaliser" is a great song. Its certainly more of the same from Internal Wrangler, which is obviously not a bad thing. Title track is real strong as well. It's certainly growing on me with each listen.

First impression wasn't so great, but I now like it considerably. Opening track is great, more variety I think. More of a solid album then Internal Wrangler.

A bit disappointing in that the majority of the songs have doppelgangers on Internal Wrangler. "Harmony" is really nice though, more spacious and pristine than anything they've done before. But overall, eh. And I had such high hopes.

Agreed. Not sure how I feel about the production, but it definitely works on "For the Wars." They don't really let loose as much as they did on other records. Nothing even remotely as enegetic as "D.P." Does anyone else get tired of hearing the same chord progressions over and over again?

I haven't heard the album, but saw them play about a week ago. Their set featured a substantial amount of new tracks, and I was glad to hear some restraint being exercised.

It really sounds like a "consolidation" of Wrangler's minus the more adventurous parts, which weren't always (ever?) successful, but made it more listenable as a whole.

I am being a soppy fool and have only downloaded a couple of tracks so as not to spoil it. I must say I really don't see Distortions as the quintessential Clinic track, though (or see the lyrical parallel with Welcome - one of the tracks I did grab, being a fan of its Peel Session version Jouster - in particular), and I'd be interested if Tyler could expand on that.

I've probably talked enough online about why I find Distortions disappointing, but it's one of very few songs where I hear VU and not much else. Maybe I'm alone in this, since VU is the parallel that always comes up, but for my money despite nagging familiarity and some blatant borrowing Clinic's sound as a whole is usually excitingly hard to pin down, with a VU influence only being a tiny part of what they do (and indeed they run with that VU influence in a very different direction to most of the other bands that get the same comparisons).

ILM makes me feel even more inarticulate than I actually am. Sigh. This post makes no sense, but it's the closest I'll get, so I suppose I'll hit Submit all the same.

Apologies... I saw your thread after I posted mine

I think I must be one of few who like it judging by peoples first thoughts.

Their songs swell up and don't always go anywhere obvious. Not as much to dance to as Internal Wrnagler, but perversely more seductive

Oh, I forgot to say: I like what little I've heard so far. None of it really grabbed me in that thrilling and alien way the first three singles did, but then that's just because I've been following them so avidly since then so it'll never really be quite as weird and mysterious again. Maybe I should stop reading every Clinic article going so I can keep some of the mystery. On the other hand, maybe I should just accept that it's gone and keep reading all this stuff.

(And yeah, I was a Pure Morning fan approximately before Clinic or at least at the same time as the singles, but knew nothing about them or whether they were actually related or not until the compilation came out anyway. At first I actually thought I preferred PM, but this was probably just the emotional advantage of having wept along to Two- Inch Helium Buddah several billion times after being dumped. Sigh, etc. Oh, I'm rambling again. Duh. Sorry.)
