Ween - Shinola Vol. 1

Seems to be a Dukes of Stratosphear type effort ... each of the 12 songs knowingly apes a 70's act/song with delicious results. Some of the connections so far =

Boys Club - Doobie Brothers
Gabrielle - Elvis Costello/Joe Jackson
Did You See Me - Pink Floyd (Wish You Were Here)
Transitions - Steely Dan
Monique the Freak - Prince

Others are damn familiar but I can't quite tab the reference ... Someday has an America/Bread/John Lennon feel but there's a more direct influence.

Very entertaining so far ... I especially like the jazz/klezmer nonsense of Israel.

Oh holy shit, I hadn't even heard of this!

each of the 12 songs knowingly apes a 70's act/song with delicious results

Kinda like 1/3rd of their catalog to date!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 17:05 (twenty years ago)

I was about to say, and this is different from their past how?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 17:15 (twenty years ago)

What? What is this? A new Ween album????

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 18:02 (twenty years ago)

No, it's a b-sides and unreleased thing, not sure from when but the majority sounds like their material of the past 4-5 years.

And it's no more of a specific band/genre exercise than any of their other stuff, although Gabrielle=Elvis C/Joe jackson??? That's Thin Lizzy, bro. You're stretchin' with the rest, but i'll grant you the Floyd one.

There are about 3 or 4 good/great tunes (in a very brown, weenish sense of greatness) and the rest is garbage.

Tastes good on the bun!

This record is only available via WEEN.Com and participating CIMS stores, as far as I know. Definitely worth tracking down...

i would so love to hear ween do a faux-kraftwerk/numan/devo type song.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 18:23 (twenty years ago)

Where the Mutha*(&^%$ cheese at?

57 7th (calstars), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 18:23 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I can see the Thin Lizzy refs too b'angelo. But I guarantee the Doobies (down to the McDonald-esque vox) track and their Prince admiration was well established on their first album with LMLYP.

So yeah it's nothing new, but in my book it's more of the same high quality greatness! I'm enjoying immensely 2day, 100%.

Boys Club - Doobie Brothers
Gabrielle - Elvis Costello/Joe Jackson
Did You See Me - Pink Floyd (Wish You Were Here)
Transitions - Steely Dan
Monique the Freak - Prince

Odd that you mention this. ("Boys Club" is TOTALLY Michael McDonald, btw.) Anyway, it's odd that you mentioned this because days after hearing The Mollusk for the first time way back in 1997, I wrote up a similar list that resembled the following...

"The Mollusk" - The Moody Blues (especially the speaking part at the end)
"It's Gonna Be Alright" - "Time After Time" by Cyndi Lauper
"Cold Blows The Wind" - Pink Floyd
"Buckingham Green" - Ozzy
"Ocean Man" - Zappa
"She Wanted To Leave" - Beegees

billstevejim (billstevejim), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 22:03 (twenty years ago)

Theres no b-sides on this. It's just songs that were previously only available via illegal downloading. "Big Fat Fuck" and "Monique The Freak" were previously on Craters Of The Sac, which is this 9-song cassette they released that I've never heard all the way through, except I'm pretty sure the original "Monique" was at least 10 minutes long. I'm thinking the Shinola one is a newer version.

billstevejim (billstevejim), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 22:06 (twenty years ago)

Ween is one of my two favorite bands, so I may be biased, but this is fucking great. I'm only halfway through, but I've liked all 6 songs so far. Which songs do you think are "garbage"? I'm just not hearing it...

I really hope volume 2 will be released soon.

But didn't White Pepper do this exceptionally well? Or was it just me who heard Jimmy Buffett, Steely Dan, Foghat, John Lennon, etc. in the mix?

Erick H (Erick H), Thursday, 28 July 2005 01:19 (twenty years ago)

Absolutely, White Pepper does this as well though not as consistently as Shinola.

zaxxon25 (zaxxon25), Thursday, 28 July 2005 15:50 (twenty years ago)

Monique is more George Clinton than Prince IMHO

Tmi, Wednesday, 3 August 2005 19:11 (twenty years ago)

Ah yes, can you not hear the majesty yet earnestness of the Doobie Brothers yet also hear the landscapes of mid period Eno and Tangerine Dream in the mini opus that is "Big Fat Fuck"?

donut ferry (donut), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 19:15 (twenty years ago)

I guess "garbage" probably is a bit harsh, but admittedly i am not much of a fan of post-'mollusk' ween, which most of this sounds mostly like. I dunno, I am a huge ween fan as well, but this don't do it for me. That said, I think "Tastes Good On The Bun," "Big Fat Fuck," and "Boys Club" are pretty great and extremely brown.

b'angelo, Wednesday, 3 August 2005 19:18 (twenty years ago)

Re all the above...."Craters Of The Sac" was a download-only album that Ween posted on their site for a week or so sometime around '99. 3 of the songs are on Shinola-Monique, Big Fat Fuck, and How High Can U Fly. The first two are definitely different-BFF was almost 8 minutes long then, and Monique was just barely over 10. As for the rest, Tastes Good... dates back to 90 or 91-there's a radio show from 91 that has that song. Gabrielle dates from sometime in the mid 90's, and yeah, it SHOULD be a great lost Thin Lizzy song. Transitions, I believe, is a "Pure Guava" outtake. (Or was-they might have re-recorded all the songs in the past year.) Boy's Club was a Mollusk outtake. Don't know about the rest.
Hope this is useful to anyone reading this. Any Ween freaks interested in trading stuff email me with "WEEN" in the title.
Cheers.

I thought Gabrielle was an obvious Thin Lizzy parody. But I can see Costello/Jackson too.

Boys Club is awesome.

""She Wanted To Leave" - Beegees"

You know, I heard this as Ween doing Richard Thompson. I can kinda hear the Bee Gees in it, but the vocals are a bullseye RT impression.

James, Thursday, 2 March 2006 18:29 (twenty years ago)

agreed on "She Wanted To Leave" = Richard Thompson
