MTV VMA Nominees

IT IS THE WAY

I don't see what makes this year different than any others. There are still plenty of great videos among those nominees.

Nice to look at -- nice to listen to -- but still not much there.

I really thought that "Mr. Brightside" was gonna have a crack at Best Video--nominated, not won, obv.--but it's got enough noms elsewhere that it still has pretty good chances of taking home a major category.

I'm not sure, but I'm guessing it was on the air at some point prior to/possibly during the first season of The Real World.

Actually, I guess I named several....meant to say when was the last video that was an event post 1996 or so....

Probably OTM, but I hold out hope that Laguna Beach, Andy Milonakis, and Date My Mom won't win out in the end....I mean, they can't, right?

Videos hardly have any outlets anymore in the US. MTV's programming doesn't even reflect it's own award show as it should.

She should win every year.

Coldplay: I like it but Chris Martin touches his head too much.
Green Day: Dull + Dull = Boring.
Gwen Stefani: 35 year-old cheerleader? Sign me up!
Kanye West: The best video out of all of them, but he won't win.
Snoop Dogg/Pharrell: It's probably the most original rap video I've seen so far. It has Bentleys, Dancin' Girls, References to Champagne, Gangs and Weed. HEY!!! Wait a minute...

So.. I still think Missy was robbed.

Most basic cable packages don't include MTV2. I've lived in 3 cities in the past 5 years and have never seen it.

Yeah, this is what it really comes down to. Even MTV2 isn't so hot anymore--it still shows vids a whole lot, but that Sic 'em Friday bullshit is really threatening to take over the channel altogether. And needless to say, it's only about 1/20 as good now as it was in '97.

How is Snoop nominated for best video but not for for best male video?

This happens all the time. I can't really explain it, except that maybe MTV wants to share the wealth and not let any vids totally dominate.

But MTV stands for Music Television, which is misleading. They should alter the name to something else.

VH-1 also still stands for Video Hits 1st, which is certainly no longer the case.

Might have something to do with proliferation of satellite/digital/extc, who knows. All I know is that I've never had MTV2, so my complaining about MTV's lack of music has nothing to do with "laziness" or ignorance of MTV2.

Also, how in the world is a Mars Volta video nominated? Don't these videos actually have to be shown on MTV to count?

just did some scanning and found that M2 is only showing 15 hours of video-related prgramming today, which is counting stuff like Making the Video specials, artist interviews, things like that. Admittedly that's a hell of a lot better than MTV or VH-1 today, but I don't think it's even as good as MTV a decade ago, much less when they were supposedly a 24-hour video network.

OTM, I've been saying that for years. Music fans currently have no cable channel that they can turn to, besides the Viacom affiliates, all of which don't take music seriously.

Did I miss the memo where it said Gwen Stefani isn't allowed to be 35? I think it's "interesting" that this comes up so much lately.

Which means 25 is the new 15 which in turn makes Demi Moore a pedophile.

2002 was the only good VMA's of this decade so far.

Also "Breakthrough Video" is always the real video of the year, although half the time the winner is never announced during the actual awards show - only when the winner is fairly huge. So if Missy wins (it's either her or Gorillaz), I'm guessing they will show it on TV.
