this channel has really gone down the shitter hasn't it? Or have people just stopped making interesting music videos?

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 17:15 (twenty years ago)

PISS NOT ON JEEBUS WALKS

IT IS THE WAY

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 17:18 (twenty years ago)

It just seems like there are fewer and fewer videos -- shitty and otherwise -- nowadays.

PB, Tuesday, 26 July 2005 17:19 (twenty years ago)

this channel has really gone down the shitter hasn't it? Or have people just stopped making interesting music videos?

I don't see what makes this year different than any others. There are still plenty of great videos among those nominees.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 17:20 (twenty years ago)

It feels like "Jesus Walks" has been out for like 5 years already.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 17:21 (twenty years ago)

the Video of the Year noms are so lame. all popular and heavily rotated songs/videos, but does anyone think "Speed of Sound" or "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" are particularly good videos? the other ones you could at least make an argument for.

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 17:23 (twenty years ago)

"Speed of Sound" is jittery.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 17:24 (twenty years ago)

The "Speed of Sound" video I guess fits the song as well as could be expected.

Nice to look at -- nice to listen to -- but still not much there.

PB, Tuesday, 26 July 2005 17:26 (twenty years ago)

I was always under the impression that the VMAs were just as much about the popularity of the videos as the quality, so it's not too surprising to see pretty-good-not-great vids like BOBD up there.

I really thought that "Mr. Brightside" was gonna have a crack at Best Video--nominated, not won, obv.--but it's got enough noms elsewhere that it still has pretty good chances of taking home a major category.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 17:28 (twenty years ago)

Fuck "Oh" in the ear. That's maybe the most irritating video I've seen all year.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 17:33 (twenty years ago)

When was the last music video that was an event in the post Michael Jackson MTV era? I remember when "Buddy Holly" came out -- I'd sit in front of the tube for hours to watch the video again and again. Green Day videos used to be events. Smashing Pumpkins videos were events (at least for me). Ditto for Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Snoop, Aerosmith, Madonna, etc. Granted, this was when I was in grade school and high school and I seemingly had nothing better to do than watch MTV all day long, but there was always some inextricable about great songs and great videos. Now, even songs MTV does play that are good (Gwen for one) I don't give 2 shits about their videos.

PB, Tuesday, 26 July 2005 17:36 (twenty years ago)

PB, I'd like for you to meet Missy Elliott. You will make many ginchy music video babies together.

The Ghost of "LOSE CONTROL" FOR PRESIDENT (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 17:39 (twenty years ago)

When was the last music video that was an event in the post Michael Jackson MTV era?

I'm not sure, but I'm guessing it was on the air at some point prior to/possibly during the first season of The Real World.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 17:40 (twenty years ago)

I don't think you're going to get as many event videos these days just because they're showed so much less.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 17:41 (twenty years ago)

When was the last music video that was an event in the post Michael Jackson MTV era?

Actually, I guess I named several....meant to say when was the last video that was an event post 1996 or so....

PB, Tuesday, 26 July 2005 17:42 (twenty years ago)

I don't think you're going to get as many event videos these days just because they're showed so much less.

Probably OTM, but I hold out hope that Laguna Beach, Andy Milonakis, and Date My Mom won't win out in the end....I mean, they can't, right?

PB, Tuesday, 26 July 2005 17:44 (twenty years ago)

The VMA's aren't about celebrating good videos, silly! They're about who's wearing what and who's gonna try and steal the show in some form or another. It's like prom for the famous.

Videos hardly have any outlets anymore in the US. MTV's programming doesn't even reflect it's own award show as it should.

kevin says relax (daddy warbuxx), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 17:47 (twenty years ago)

I find it hard to believe, or at least don't want to believe that people have just given up on the music video medium entirely and that the amount of videos being shown now is going to be astronomical compared to the amount in fvie years...but I can't think of what event there would be to change this trend. I guess the fact that reality TV appears to be closer to the end of its dominance than the beginning is probably a good sign, but I have no idea how that'll translate to MTV and VH1.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 17:47 (twenty years ago)

how come when people do the whole 'they don't show music videos like they used to on mtv when martha quinn was there anymore' spiel they ignore the existence of mtv2 (which shows videos almost as much as mtv EVER did), mtv hits, vh1 hits, mtv jams, mtv soul, vh1 classics, etc.? is it just laziness? how are 4+ channels devoted to showing music videos < one channel devoted to showing music videos?

j blount (papa la bas), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 17:56 (twenty years ago)

How is Snoop nominated for best video but not for for best male video?

Nick H (Nick H), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 17:59 (twenty years ago)

Missy Elliott was robbed a spot at the Video of the Year.

She should win every year.

I'll some up the Videos that are nominated

Coldplay: I like it but Chris Martin touches his head too much.
Green Day: Dull + Dull = Boring.
Gwen Stefani: 35 year-old cheerleader? Sign me up!
Kanye West: The best video out of all of them, but he won't win.
Snoop Dogg/Pharrell: It's probably the most original rap video I've seen so far. It has Bentleys, Dancin' Girls, References to Champagne, Gangs and Weed. HEY!!! Wait a minute...

So.. I still think Missy was robbed.

Horridmonsta (MichaelCostello1), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 18:03 (twenty years ago)

(x-post)

Most basic cable packages don't include MTV2. I've lived in 3 cities in the past 5 years and have never seen it.

PB, Tuesday, 26 July 2005 18:03 (twenty years ago)

mtv2's in a higher percentage of households now than mtv was in 1986.

j blount (papa la bas), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 18:06 (twenty years ago)

I think the fact that they had to come up with spin-off channels speaks to how much the original ones have deviated from what they initially were about...at first. VH1 now claims to be the "Pop Culture" channel or somethin', which is fine. They've switched the focus of their programming. But MTV stands for Music Television, which is misleading. They should alter the name to something else.

kevin says relax (daddy warbuxx), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 18:08 (twenty years ago)

Most basic cable packages don't include MTV2. I've lived in 3 cities in the past 5 years and have never seen it.

Yeah, this is what it really comes down to. Even MTV2 isn't so hot anymore--it still shows vids a whole lot, but that Sic 'em Friday bullshit is really threatening to take over the channel altogether. And needless to say, it's only about 1/20 as good now as it was in '97.

How is Snoop nominated for best video but not for for best male video?

This happens all the time. I can't really explain it, except that maybe MTV wants to share the wealth and not let any vids totally dominate.

But MTV stands for Music Television, which is misleading. They should alter the name to something else.

VH-1 also still stands for Video Hits 1st, which is certainly no longer the case.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 18:09 (twenty years ago)

you guys know there isn't cocaine in coca-cola anymore right?

j blount (papa la bas), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 18:11 (twenty years ago)

mtv2's in a higher percentage of households now than mtv was in 1986.

Might have something to do with proliferation of satellite/digital/extc, who knows. All I know is that I've never had MTV2, so my complaining about MTV's lack of music has nothing to do with "laziness" or ignorance of MTV2.

Also, how in the world is a Mars Volta video nominated? Don't these videos actually have to be shown on MTV to count?

PB, Tuesday, 26 July 2005 18:11 (twenty years ago)

mtv2 (which shows videos almost as much as mtv EVER did)

just did some scanning and found that M2 is only showing 15 hours of video-related prgramming today, which is counting stuff like Making the Video specials, artist interviews, things like that. Admittedly that's a hell of a lot better than MTV or VH-1 today, but I don't think it's even as good as MTV a decade ago, much less when they were supposedly a 24-hour video network.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 18:20 (twenty years ago)

As usual, the categories don't make any sense, e.g. "Best Dance Video" -- I fail to see the difference between those videos and anything nominated in any other category (R&B in particular).

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 18:30 (twenty years ago)

the dance video award used to be a good token category for electronic acts, but looks like there aren't any popular enough anymore to even get that much.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 18:32 (twenty years ago)

Best Rock Video
Foo Fighters, "Best of You"
Green Day, "Boulevard of Broken Dreams"
The Killers, "Mr. Brightside"
My Chemical Romance, "Helena"
Weezer, "Beverly Hills"

Best Pop Video
Ashlee Simpson, "Pieces of Me"
Gwen Stefani, "Hollaback Girl"
Jesse McCartney, "Beautiful Soul"
Kelly Clarkson, "Since U Been Gone"
Lindsay Lohan, "Rumors"

What the hell is the difference between these two sets of videos?

PB, Tuesday, 26 July 2005 18:41 (twenty years ago)

TITTAYS

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 18:49 (twenty years ago)

(IOW Jesse McCartney has a bigger rack than Rivers Cuomo.)

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 18:55 (twenty years ago)

They should alter the name to something else.

OTM, I've been saying that for years. Music fans currently have no cable channel that they can turn to, besides the Viacom affiliates, all of which don't take music seriously.

billstevejim (billstevejim), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 21:47 (twenty years ago)

The real winner for Video of the year is Ashton Kutcher anyway. I'm sure there are more people who have seen every episode of Punk'd than those who have seen even one of the Best Video nominees.

billstevejim (billstevejim), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 21:48 (twenty years ago)

Gwen Stefani: 35 year-old cheerleader? Sign me up!

Did I miss the memo where it said Gwen Stefani isn't allowed to be 35? I think it's "interesting" that this comes up so much lately.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 21:54 (twenty years ago)

35 is the new 25 anyway.

billstevejim (billstevejim), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 21:57 (twenty years ago)

Holy shit PB that's ridiculous! I can't believe its so gender-divided!

deej.., Tuesday, 26 July 2005 22:02 (twenty years ago)

everyone i know (myself included) who gets mtv2 are cableless scrubs who just randomly discovered that it shows up on some random, high-on-the-dial channel (80 for me... the only other channels i get are NBC-11, FOX-10, and PBS-13). i looked, and none of the cable tv packages from the local provider will get you mtv2. not that anyone's missing anything. there's the rock video countdown, but i never manage to catch anything on there but jackass-style shenannigans.

booboo nuts, Tuesday, 26 July 2005 22:05 (twenty years ago)

35 is the new 25 anyway.

Which means 25 is the new 15 which in turn makes Demi Moore a pedophile.

Cunga (Cunga), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 22:42 (twenty years ago)

Drop It Like It's Hot should win for the fact that Chad Hugo actually shows up in the video. I mean, it's only a 3 second shot (at least from what I remember) of him holding up/playing what looks like a Mircokorg, but y'know it's almost like he actually exists!

but seriously though .... Missy.

lemin (lemin), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 22:54 (twenty years ago)

VH1 Classic is great.. especially the show "The Alternative." When I stayed by a friend's house I watched it practically all day..

Too bad Cablevision doesn't offer it :-\

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 23:15 (twenty years ago)

three words:

CLASSIC ARTS SHOWCASE.

reo, Wednesday, 27 July 2005 04:53 (twenty years ago)

I still remember a time when they nominated videos because they were actually good. I'm so old.

Savin All My Love 4 u (Savin 4ll my (heart) 4u), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 08:58 (twenty years ago)

when are the VMA's ?
who's hosting ?
ah, i'm getting excited : that's gonna make one of my hungover sundays !

AleXTC (AleXTC), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 09:09 (twenty years ago)

Sunday August 28. I think P. Diddy is hosting but I'm not sure.

JoB (JoB), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 10:46 (twenty years ago)

"male video", "female video"

JoB (JoB), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 10:47 (twenty years ago)

And again there's hip-hop and rap categories and again I have no clue how that works and again I'm sure nobody can explain this "difference" convincingly.

JoB (JoB), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 10:49 (twenty years ago)

hum. that's far... and p.diddy ? hum. last year it was j-lo, right ?

AleXTC (AleXTC), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 10:55 (twenty years ago)

There was no host last year. P Diddy will undoubtedly be a terrible host. There are practically zero performers with big singles from the past year who would be willing to do anything interesting at the VMA's, so expect another borefest.

2002 was the only good VMA's of this decade so far.

Also "Breakthrough Video" is always the real video of the year, although half the time the winner is never announced during the actual awards show - only when the winner is fairly huge. So if Missy wins (it's either her or Gorillaz), I'm guessing they will show it on TV.

billstevejim (billstevejim), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 11:27 (twenty years ago)

it's true that VMA's are usually boring...but somehow, nice to watch (that may have something to do with the hungover state mentioned, though...).
about last year, then that's why i had no idea who the host was apart from j-lo introducing the ceremony...
i think the only fun part (or at least, memorable) was chakakhan singing way off key !

AleXTC (AleXTC), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 12:02 (twenty years ago)

BRING BACK ARSENIO!

j blount (papa la bas), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 12:04 (twenty years ago)

i think the worst part of the VMAs is often the rock videos category... i'm always baffled by the bands in competition... and moreover by the ones winning !

AleXTC (AleXTC), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 12:20 (twenty years ago)

vma sucks...really...at least to me

helena burton, Monday, 1 August 2005 06:41 (twenty years ago)
