the good MC Selza sez there will be Plastics reissues coming soon. I can't wait. I only have the Welcome Back vinyl album on Island, and I love it. Never has a band made themselves such a perfect midpoint between the four corners that were Talking Heads, XTC, Yoko Ono, and YMO than the Plastics. I really need to hear those earlier albums.

"In 1988, Victor Musical Industries released Forever Plastico, a CD that compiles the Plastics’ first album, Welcome Plastics, and one-half of the Plastics’ second album, Origato Plastico. Why they didn’t simply take the time to include Origato Plastico in its entirety is a mystery. As an import that might be, as of this writing, out-of-print, it is virtually impossible to find it in most North American music stores, both online and off. Luckily it can easy be had for a mere 20 dollars through eBay."

Yep, that's the one! Also a fake keyboard made out of pastry or something whose keys crumble away when "played". Totally wacky and classic for that video alone. (Never heard 'em anywhere else but that SCTV eppy. Nor seeing their records either.)

The Plastics stuff is all being re-issued this month in Japan. I want there to be a legit re-issue of Pete Brown "The Not Forgotten Association"! -- SoHoLa (ronpkan...), July 14th, 2005.
SOHOLA, YOU HAVE BEEN SUMMONED!

And the Plastic albums are easy to find in Japan at least.

Yeah, I agree. The only song of theirs I've heard that really appeals to me is that 7" version of "Robot". I was really interested in listening to them originally after I heard the Pizzicato Five's version of "Good", but unfortunately, now that I've listened to their albums, I think that the P 5 version is way better than the original, which is just a weird jammy thing that lacks the fun energy that the P 5 brought to their cover of it. And the rest of their material, "Robot" excepted, I find pretty boring, way too jammy and straightforward in a New Wave sort of way. I can't say that the stuff I've heard from Melon has been any better, but the only tracks I've heard from them were the ones that some members of the B-52's were involved with.

After (finally) watching "Downtown '81," I've been listening to Plastics. Happy to finally find this on youtube:

Wow, I got so excited hearing their first two albums that I was kind of crushed to find out that they didn't record any more :(
Does anyone know the lyrics for "Cards"? For a band that I presume doesn't speak much English the lyrics are pretty surprising (and kind of graphic). IMO it's their best tune. I gave it a shot:
I said all your life belongs to your cash cardsIt's a sad moment, you feel like naked king (?)Don't you forget it, you take a number, 30 13I said a oh ow ow ow whow ow wow what's going on?
She said, "show me your ID card, if you please"I said, "I'm your idol, that's my ID"Too many people can't make much money, just like me, just like youI said whoa oh ow oh woaw oh wow what's going on?
(Cash card/credit card/shopping card/body card (?)/ID card/christmas card/americard (??)/ cooool card)
Some day you're gonna make love with your cardsYou gotta get to put your card into her cuntYou gotta get to put your card into her cunt, fucking cuntI said oh oh oh heh ow what oh aah what's going on?
You got a cash to pay your dinner dish (??)Cash/cash/cash/cash, etc. etc.
How bad did I screw this up?

posted that in the obit thread. couldn't find this one to bump. sad to hear.
wish I could find more of his stuff outside of The Plastics. looks like he did a good variety of stuff, crossing over into hip-hop at some point, legitimately becoming one of the first Japanese rappers. not like I've ever heard it though, outside of that Melon album Deep Cut, which in retrospect was very influential. Plastics were great, wish they'd done more, but I can totally understand why they stopped after two. Rest in peace!!!
