I say overlooked classic. Full of inventive, catchy and solid tracks. Bursting with feelings of paranoia, insecurity and sarcasm. Could this have been The Cars' "Pinkerton"?

ILM.. you take over

it's ok. predictable hipster favorite (just like arrival is everyone's favorite abba album). what's wrong with the s/t and candy-o?

sorry, i'm just tired of "overlooked" albums that aren't really

Well, Pinkerton is catchy, inventive, and full of solid tracks. Panorama is not.

Everything up until Heartbeat City is a blur for me, because I only had the Greatest Hits album growing up. Which songs are on Panorama again?

"Touch And Go" sums up the Cars in a most succinct fashion.

My second-favourite Cars LP after the debut. "Down Boys" and "Getting Through" are two of their fastest-ever songs (for what that's worth), "You Wear Those Eyes" and "Running To You" two of the prettier ones, and "Touch And Go", "Panorama" and "Down Boys" are just plain weird. (Of course, my favourites from the first two LPs were the two strangest, "I'm In Touch With Your World" and "Shoo Be Doo".)

"Touch And Go" and "Gimme Some Slack" are two of my favourite Cars songs. The album as a whole might not be classic, but those songs are.

"Up and Down" is awesome.

This was the record I was playing when my dad told me John Lennon had been shot.

"touch and go" is terrible and one day you'll all realize this.

gee I thought I liked this record the best of all of them, but boy oh boy I don't wanna be called a hipster! haha, candy-o it is!

Haikunym (Haikunym), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 16:30 (twenty years ago)

Candy-O is a better album than Panorama for sure. But my post is really about calling out Panorama for what it is: a real wonderfully eclectic record that needs to be listened to again. It will then be acknowledged for it's classicness.

one year passes...
I swear they had to have been listening to Wire before making this album. Now if I can find proof...

Wasn't this album their poorest seller until Door to Door?

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Saturday, 12 August 2006 12:35 (nineteen years ago)

If poor sales = dud, then a lotta folks 'round here like a lotta duds.

Sweat Loaf (Sweat Loaf), Saturday, 12 August 2006 12:42 (nineteen years ago)

That's not what I suggested; but since you ask, it is striking that the first two albums were mega-sellers and Shake It Up and Heartbeat City redressed the balance. Sometimes the little boys and girls understand.

This question made me curious - I knew they'd sold a lot of albums, and according to the RIAA database Candy-O has been certified 4 x platinum, and Panorama merely platinum. I'm really surprised Candy-O had that much appeal.

In the Cars' case the sophomore-album-as-commercial-and-artistic-consolidation paradigm worked in spades.
